This previous year's field looks similar. I agree, the instagram effect probably has a little to do with it. Regardless, I like the way it looks when they do this.

Its the use of a roller to make the grass bend in opposite directions and thus reflecting light a little differently and producing different shades of green. Same technique used in MLB.

Kinda off topic, but do you know how the MLB groundskeepers put that little logo or whatever in the back of the mound. Its always a darker color of dirt, but it is always so perfect even after being stepped on. Haha always wanted to know how they did that

usually it's just a stencil and some water or if it's lighter shaded dirt it's turface.

AHAHA! I bumped this thread, but to be honest this game is really making me want field turf even more. I think this gets done in the off season.

I know we've got more important things on our minds right now, but strong rumor of field turf coming for next year.

I read DomerDomain about once a month, but they have one poster "IrishFan33" who is 100% money on his info. He has some connection to Rabasa (I forgot if he's a friend or HS coach or what), but he was in the locker room after the game and said he heard that the Wake game was the last game with natural grass.

I wouldn't post DD stuff here unless it was money info, and this guy is always right. He's got pics in the locker room too, he's no BSer.

The alumnus that has sat in front of us for practically my whole life told me at the game this weekend it was happening. I didn't question his info as he is a great guy and has no reason to lie to us.

There's something the ND blogger for ESPN did with BK in an interview, and there's a decent quote from BK in it.

I'll try to find it but if someone else finds is please post.

Edit:

Matt - You've got a while now before you play at home again. How important will it be to resolve whatever issues there are with the playing surface? I know it seems every year like, 'Field Turf could come! Field Turf could come!' What will those conversations be like, if they haven't already taken place?

BK: It is paramount to our home-field situation, relative to playing and continued success. And I think I've put Jack (Swarbrick) out on the spot on this and he's addressed it. He's had a series of meetings and I'm very confident that we're going to have the field situation resolved in a very short period of time.

Nice find. Those Q&A's w/ Fortuna are pretty sweet.

Like many people, I think the grass is a great touch to such an historic stadium. HOWEVER, field turf couldn't come soon enough. I don't know what it is, but watching on tv just feels like they are playing on sand sometimes. In the next 10-20 years, I don't think there will be many more D-1 schools with natural grass.

Color me ND Nation, but I feel that domed stadiums and artificial turf are the bane of sport. Shitty conditions are a part of life. Differences between natural and artificial turf attributed injuries are not statistically significant. Installation and maintenance costs may well be roughly equivalent over time.

The natural world is life, and should be respected and celebrated

I grow turf in a similar climate to South Bend and you will have good years and bad. But over the last 5 years or even longer field conditions have gone downhill. I personally will hate to see the natural grass go but it needs to be done. I can assure you that they have some very good grounds people who's only job is to care for that field and if they can't do it then it's time for a change.

Grass in the northwest just isnt practical when there is a better product out there. If ND was a running a triple option attack, or a Stanford power run game, I would be more inclined to stick with the natural grass. But, Kelly is building a team that can play fast, and use their speed to their advantage. Some people say its the same surface, both teams play on it.....Look at the games ND played on turf. Arizona St was a team filled with speed and would give ND fits. ND arguably played faster that night. Michigan....they played fast.

I love it. I want that jumbotron too. A lil pre-game video showing the team walking down the steps slapping the sign LIVE...is only going to get that crowd fired up from the start.

I'm cool with composite turf, but a jumbotron could take some adjusting. I have always appreciated the purity of the traditional "focus on football" approach, but the reality is that today's version of entertainment just isn't the same conceptually that it used to be. In its most recent glory heyday of the late 80s/early 90s, ND stadium had a shrine-like feel to it, but that was back when the energy was more regularly consistent with expected championship realizations. I get that the "football only" approach is an old school train of thought that has lost touch with the twitter/15 second attention span societal direction. I mean this in a kindly condescending way. There are just way more distractions and information options to contend with.

Personally, I think I'd be cool with a jumbotron, if it was done tastefully. The worst aspect of the jumbotroning (sp) of ND stadium would be the advertising. I'm not a communist, socialist, whatever, but that stuff would get on my nerves. Keep it out. No kiss cams. No cheesy interviews. TP hype videos and the like, replays, and highlights only. :)

While we're at it, where is that music post again? The music is cool, but someone needs to chill on the repeat button. It loses it's effect quickly when it becomes predictable.

Agree 100x. I assume that's what they'd do, but as others have worried, slippery slope etc. etc.
