General question in this context: is it considered bad form for a new coach to poach his former program, esp. if it's an unhappy or underused kid? I assume it is, but I really don't know.

If you're talking about a player, it's not only poor form, it's a BIG NCAA violation.

The excitement is natural, but let's not pretend that Martin was somehow the primary factor holding our offense back over the last couple seasons. He and Kelly were two peas in a pod; we heard over and over about how much trust and systemic understanding the two shared.

Maybe we've just been unlucky with QBs, and Rees wasn't capable of running Kelly's power spread. Or maybe Kelly realizes that it's time to make some changes. Either way, Martin's departure probably won't be the catalyst for an offensive renaissance in South Bend.

Exactly, especially the bolded.

We should not be excited about this (except to the extent that we are excited for Coach Martin -- congrats to him on the new opportunity), nor should we be really bummed. Kelly chose Martin as his OC because he is a great coach MANAGER who could be a stand-in for Kelly while Kelly was attending to other matters. Martin's system was KELLY'S system ... Martin was just running it for him. Martin got way too much blame and way too much credit for the offense this season, imo. He's just putting the pieces together in the way Kelly wants him to.

I mainly view this, from a purely ND perspective, as an annoying disruption that will divert Kelly's attention from the team by forcing him to research, interview and hire a young assistant he wouldn't otherwise have needed to hire. I very much doubt that Kelly will hire an outside OC and allow him to bring his system with him. The OC at ND will run Kelly's system, period. So I am a little excited to see who Kelly hires as the new QB or WR coach or whatever, but I don't expect a major program-altering change to occur.

Charlie Weis did not seem to mind, ala Dayne Crist

Martin was basically calling plays as if Golson were playing, except Rees was under center. It would have been nice to see how his playcalling fared with a mobile, strong-armed QB.

And would be a great recruiter.

How about TA for OC and Jones for RB coach? Alford could remain Recruiting coordinator in 2014 and then hand over to Jones in 15.

Denbrock still seems more likely to be an OC over Alford though...

So he can poach coaches if he wants, then?

Also, did someone say and I missed it -- I assume Martin is not sticking around for the bowl game?

amazing !!! and just so happens his daughter goes to ND

He seems like an intense guy that recruits would probably love based on the Elite 11 shows i have watched, might not be a bad idea...

Hadn't yet been worked out, per an II tweet prior to Martin boarding the MU plane.

We could back the money truck up and go after Cam Cameron at LSU. Seemed to do wonders for Mettenburger.

Depends on the terms of the current contracts. But yes, in theory, he could go after staff.

That kid has style, you have to have a lot of confidence to wear those pants which is important for a WR (confidence that is, not necessarily flashy pants).

He can speak with coaches who are not under contract. Those coaches under contract cannot be contacted without permission from ND. Permission is customarily granted if the coach in question is interviewing for a promotion.

Likewise, Martin cannot initiate contact with players absent permission from ND. As a practical matter, the player would have to inform the school they intend to transfer before that permission would be given. Basically, if a player ended up at Miami it will be because the player initiated it.

It's not like we've had a prolific offense since Kelly has been here. This year wasn't the only problem year. Perhaps the trust and reliance between the two coaches was part of the problem. Maybe BK relied too much on a guy that frankly, isn't overly special.

Change is good.

Agreed on both accounts.

Yes, but my point was that Martin was running Kelly's systems; we're not even sure how much autonomy he had in play-calling. So don't expect a major shake-up going forward.

Alford to OC and Jones to RBs seems like to most obvious move here.

I think it's just the opposite. Kelly dictates offensive philosophy (and maybe even a lot of the play-calling). Martin was just managing his system for him. So Martin's departure probably doesn't mean much for our offense.

Change is good.

Change is only coming if Kelly feels like there's a flaw in his system. That might be the case, but I doubt it. More likely he's excited to finally take the training wheels off with Golson next season.

I've criticized play calling and game plans on occasion, but the fact is, the one year Kelly had a QB of his "type," he was undefeated and played in the national title game.
