Irish have to play error free and limit the big plays. Must hit all FG attempts. Special teams play has to be best game of year. Tall order for ND; doable, but conversely this could get ugly if things go the other way. For all practical purposes, this is ND's bowl game, but unfortunately comes during an abnormal week. Hope Irish hang tough.

I hope we play a good game and win but I just want us to make I out healthy enough to be able to win the bowl. With how this season has been we need a big win to go out on

Let's hope all the Stanford players overdid it on turkey and still have a lot of tryptophan in their systems.

It's not good for the program to give guys game reps before they earn them in practice. It contributes to lackluster practice habits. I am not there at practice, but I have a feeling Redfield will play in a given game when and if he earns his reps by performing like one of the team's top safeties in the week of practice leading into that game, simple as that.

If a DOG makes a serious mistake, it's a first down. If a safety makes a serious mistake, it's a touchdown.

In what game do they give him the serious reps? Outside of Temple and Air Force, every game has been pretty close.

I think this is it.

Jaylon losing contain or messing up has led to 1st downs.

Max bites on a play action or chases the underneath wr and it's a TD.

Did I miss something on Redfield. I thought all along he was practicing great and BK had mentioned he wasn't quite at the spot with knowledge he needed to be to QB the D.

That's why I said meaningful reps, not garbage time reps. You have to play him at some point and see what he can do, and the simple fact is that Farley makes enough mistakes in his own right that it's very hard to justify the idea that Max will make even more.

The point is that there is no way you could make a case for Jaylon playing over Spond with his inexperience. But long term, we are way better off taking the lumps this season and having him develop then we would've been having him mostly ride the pine. Similarly with Max, it's hard to pick any individual game/moment where you're definitely better off putting him in... but it's not hard to see how in a mostly lost season it makes sense long term to let him do the growing now.

Help what? His progress at safety? I'm honestly wondering why you're just dying to get Redfield a baptism by fire. He'll play the moment he's ready. If he's really the mega-athlete you, me, the recruitniks, and the staff think he is, he won't be around for the fifth year anyway. Might as well get him eight minutes of Air Force time and use him on special teams.

In a way, the worst thing that can happen is for him to have to play against Stanford, Diaco reallllly go vanilla with the calls as a result, then Hogan try to pick on him and Redfield gets an interception or something. Then, there's an off-season of "I told you so!" looming overhead.

A lot of wisdom here

Isn't that a little harsh? I know Hardy has some prior history but as far as I know Shumate doesn't. I would think sitting for the 1st quarter or first half is fair for Shumate.

we penalized tuitt a game for missing one class. certainly expectations for our players are quite high and unfortunately these two gentlemen dropped the ball here

It does seem really over the top and you have to wonder if there is more to it. Nothing like self-sacrificing two big time contributors already down 20 players against the most physical team on the schedule. I'd been impressed with the play of both Hardy and Shumate in recent weeks too.

good point...missing team meeting is a lot easier to explain to the media than a number of other things

What did they really do...

However, this could also be a perfect time for Kelly to set a standard/example. I mean we are banged up already, the game isn't really make or break our season (we are +14.5 dogs) - the expectations aren't really that high.

I want to win as much as anyone, but I think Kelly tactfully picks his spots to portray the image of "Notre Dame Football." Bet if we were 9-2, they'd be on the plane and sitting the first quarter.

I obviously hope that we win, but if/when we end up on top when the clocks hit zero all that'll eat at me the rest of the night is that god damn Pitt game...

We'd be staring a bcs bowl in the face.

Good decision on the part of Kelly. I highly doubt this is a first time offense.

We are still going to beat Stanford.

Poor kids. Coach Kelly is being so hard on them for showing up late. He should really loosen up all his rules and expectations for Eilar and Elijah b/c we're thin and playing a very tough Stanford team. Gimme a goddamn break people.
