Who will be a bigger loss next year, Nix or Martin? I would say Nix due to depth at oline. However a great LT is hard to replace. But that's just my opinion.

Nix for sure, Elmer will step in at LT and there will be no let down.

Nix by far. The DL has a chance to go from the strongest area of the team to the weakest next year, assuming both Nix and Tuitt are gone.

I just wish we could have Nix and Tuitt back for one more year assuming EG is back for the spring. It just seems ND either has a strong defense or a strong offensive but not both. It would really suck to lose both Nix and Tuitt.

Nix and it's not even close, IMO. The middle of the defense (DTs, ILBs and safeties) will lack experience and depth. And compared to the outside positions (DE, OLB and corner), will be far less talented. Nobody in the country masks a weak interior better than Nix.

Martin will be missed but it looks like Elmer could be special. Having Niklas back next year will provide additional protection for both the tackles too. If I remember correctly, Golson is decent at moving around in the pocket. Martin, of course, will be missed but the line will be just fine.

Nix...if we get golson back we are fine at OT. Can't wait to see a play break down and golson run for 40yds!

Not directed at you, but isn't that the thought we had this year with ILB and safety?

One of the big reasons we have been able to move the ball this year is the OL, specifically the left side. The pass pro has been fantastic and the run game has improved as the right side has gained more experience. While I like Elmers and the other frosh, we will take a step back next year. Luckily, EG has the mobility to get around it, but the OL will be a big concern of mine heading into the year.

This. People are vastly underestimating how much of a step backward the OL is likely to take. Offensive line is not the place to be inexperienced, no matter how talented the group of potential fill-ins (and they are obviously very talented).

I think you're vastly underappreciating just how bad-*** and invaluable Zack Martin is, espically at the position he plays. Elmer could be special, but he'll be a sophomore replacing a guy who hasn't given up a sack in nearly 2 years. Think about that...he has a statue for a QB and yet nobody goes through Martin. And the LT spot is so important they basically wrote a book about it (Blind Side).

So to say there won't be a let-down is IMO some major green kool-aid talk. I would love to believe it, but just look at Jaylon Smith the first few games...as unbelievably special as he is, there was definitely a drop-off from Danny Spond at the DOG, and it really hurt the defense. And Danny Spond isn't in the same league as Z Martin as far as pro potential.

Soooooo, both spots will be really hard to replace. I agree in that Nix will probably be harder, but not by that large a margin...

I think all things being equal, losing Martin at LT is worse.

But we know of a couple options that could step in next year and play (Elmer, Stanley sliding over, another upper or lower classman), thus, sort of easing our concern.

The fact that nobody really has any clue who will be playing NT (or if it'll be 2 DT's) next year makes losing Nix that much harder.

To be fair, he missed the assignment that led to Tommy being blown up and throwing the opening pick 6 against Oklahoma, but the point is still understood. Zack has helped to keep Tommy healthy which has been huge.

We also lost an All-American offensive lineman this year in Cave. Barely skipped a beat.
Will we miss Martin? Of course. But there's always turnover on the offensive line, and we've got the best depth we've had in years. His graduating won't cripple our offense by any means.
Nix is a fairly unique talent in recent Notre Dame history, and probably the best nose tackle in the country. There's no obvious replacement coming up behind him. I'm not trying to minimize Zack Martin, because he's great, but I'm not sure how "Bigger loss: Nix or Martin?" is even a conversation.

Zach Martin is the best LT I have seen at Notre Dame. He will be missed. Elmer will be a great replacement and by the time Elmer is a senior, I think we will be saying that Elmer was a better LT than Martin

Throwing a ball on the dime while being blindfolded, wow. Golson was good his freshman year but he is going to be stud next year

I don't think people really understand the uniqueness of his situation.

Here was a QB that led his team to the NCG as a RS Freshman, cheated on a test and was kicked out of school for a year. How many other places would have simply suspended him for a game or even just a summer? Not many places, IMO.

And although it may not seem like it immediately, Kelly & Co. could point to EG as exhibit #1 for recruits and parents. Come to ND and your academics and integrity is going to be taken so seriously that we're willing to strip a year of eligibility from you and drastically hurt our chances of returning to a BCS bowl. Its gonna hurt, its gonna be a public thing and you won't be able to run away from it. But even if something like this happens, ND is the type of place to work and sacrifice and endure to get back to. Some schools will show their loyalty to you by getting you out of this kind of trouble. But that is loyalty to their employee, a moneymaker for their machine. ND's reward in this is the payoff of the bet on individual's entire life.

I can't believe I'm saying this but if he can get to Tommy's level of accuracy/pre-snap reads he's going to put up some BIG numbers. Whitfield knows how to develop talent and we're really lucky Everett is taking his time off seriously. He's all ND and seems to be ready to take back his leadership role.

Also, good lord does Everett look bigger than last season. He looks like he can take and maybe give out a few hits.

I was thinking that as well. I didn't see his legs but his chest, shoulders, and arms look bigger and more developed

I have had a question I've been meaning to ask about the bolded portion because I have seen a couple posters write this. Since Everett was suspended from school and has to sit out the year doesn't that count as a year out of football and he could attend any school with no repercussions?

Or does a LOI bind you to a specific school for 4-5 years unless a transfer is requested? Even if you are kicked out of school.

Hmm, interesting question. I'm not an expert, but I recall looking at the transfer rules a while back, and the 1-year penalty for breaking an LOI and the 1-year period a player sits out when he transfers each has a separate basis. The first comes from the LOI itself (which I'm not sure has any bearing on anything after the student's first year of college); the second comes from NCAA rules. NCAA rules require a transferring athlete to serve a year-in-residence at his new school, the purpose being to help him get acclimated to his new environment. That rationale would seem to apply regardless of whether the player played any football the previous season. So, my guess is that Golson would still have to sit out a year if he were to decide he doesn't want to come back to ND next season and transfers elsewhere. But that's off the top of my head without looking at the rules again; could be wrong.

I am beyond impressed with Everett. I know it's just words at this point, but I think his comment about getting back into the classroom (because that is where it happened) vs on the field says alot about his character and humilty. I am all about redemption, forgiveness, and the great things that come from fighting adversity, even if that adversity is due to your own decisions.

This experience, although embarrassing and extremely difficult, might be one of the best things to ever happen to Everett. Wish this kid the best. Still and uphill battle, but I'm optimistic.

Just not against kids from Stanford.

Looks like Whitfield made him use the laces on the ball. (sort of)

Not really.
And I think Everett does use the laces sometimes.
It depends how the ball comes into the hand.
Kellys big thing is you shouldn't have to move the ball around til the laces are in position. Just wants you to throw as is.
