If a doomsday scenario occurred and either the Navy or Air Force games were cancelled, we would certainly break our "rule" of "playing the best" and schedule whomever is available. No one would criticize us in that situation. It's all about the benjamins.

There may have been a miscommunication here. The journalist said FCS in his question, but in his answer Kelly said FBS. Not sure which he meant.

I was listening too and I am certain that he said FBS twice ... but I guess I agree with you that he probably meant FCS. The way he smiled and laughed when he said it wouldn't really make sense otherwise, unless his point is that he wants to play the best teams and everyone else just wants to win. I think the point of the joke was the opposite, that he just wants to win and Swarbrick and the other administrators are the ones who insist on playing FBS teams only.

I thought when Kelly came in he said he wanted to play the best? Thats why we got teams like Texas on the schedule and not Georgia State or FCS. I would take it as he had worded it in that case: He wants to play tough competition, other people just want the easy win.

Q. If there were a contingency plan in place and that game had to be suspended or postponed, would you consider looking at an FCS opponent to fill that, or is that not even on the table for you guys?
COACH KELLY: Oh, I'd love to look at an FCS opponent. I would be one vote in a room with a lot of probably nos. I probably know how that's going to go. Probably be me and Al Lesar would be the only ones who would say yes on FCS.

How legitimate is this threat? Not the FCS schools, but that Navy/Air Force might not be able to play.

Ha, you'll need to find audio/video to convince me ... I'm certain he said FBS, and I don't think my ears are bad. I specifically remember it because I was thinking it didn't make sense in context. But it's not worth arguing over ... the more I think I about the context the more I think he must have meant FCS. Maybe they'd even correct the transcript if they thought BK had made an inadvertent error?

The Fighting Irish are full steam ahead as they prepare to face Arizona State this Saturday in Texas. Brian Kelly and the Irish are stinging after last weekend's home loss to Oklahoma - a loss that snapped Notre Dame's 10-game home winning streak.

The Irish have not lost back-to-back games since falling to Stanford and then Florida State at the end of the 2012 season. They have not dropped consecutive regular season games since losses to South Florida and then Michigan at the start of that season.

"Everybody around here wants to win football games," Kelly said on Tuesday when asked if he and his team will work even harder this week to avoid consecutive losses. "That doesn't change from one week to the other, but nobody's happy after a loss - not one player (and) not one coach. We want to win badly - badly."

"I don't think that we ever equate wanting to win with spending more time in the office, because if you do you don't understand how to win...if you've gotta spend more time, you don't understand how to work to win anyway."

The margin for error has been small this season. That showed itself on Saturday when Oklahoma quickly turned two early turnovers into 14 points and then went on a touchdown drive at the end of the first half after a third turnover. While the margin has been thin this year, Kelly says it really is no different than it was during last season's 12-0 regular season.

Kelly recently showed his team a reel of plays from last year's season - from Tommy Rees leading comebacks against Purdue and BYU to a Pittsburgh field goal attempt hitting the upright - to demonstrate a point to his team.

"My point being is the margin last year was razor thin and the margin this year is razor thin," Kelly explained. "What we haven't done well, quite frankly, is the ordinary things. Last year we did the ordinary things much better. We have to do the ordinary things much better."

Running pass routes correctly, completing easy passes, performing basic pass protections and being in the correct spot in pass defenses are examples Kelly gave of where his team can do better in performing those "ordinary" tasks.

"The difference between 5-0 and 3-2 is about five or six plays," said Kelly. "That's kind of where we are at this point."

As it pertains specifically to this week's opponent, Arizona State, Kelly says eliminating "big chunk" plays will be "crucial" to Notre Dame's success. The Sun Devils like to throw the ball to their running backs and that is an area where the Irish have been vulnerable this season.

"We can't afford to give up any big plays," said Kelly. "They catch the ball very well. They're a team that will challenge you on the perimeter throwing the football."

Under the Roof

Notre Dame has not played in a domed stadium since its Oct. 31, 2009 game against Washington State in the Alamodome game in San Antonio. That will change with this Saturday's game at AT&T Stadium in Irving. The Fighting Irish have had walk-throughs at Ford Field in Detroit and at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis prior to their respective games against Michigan and Purdue earlier this season though.

"Generally it's just getting used to visually picking up the football," Kelly said of playing in a dome. "We've walked through at Ford Field and we've walked through at Lucas Stadium and we've thrown the ball around and punted the ball and kicked it and our guys have acclimated quite well. I don't expect there to be any issues. We will have a similar walk-through on Saturday prior to the game."

Kelly and the Irish are excited to play in a new venue for the Shamrock Series game this weekend. Playing in Texas also helps at least a little bit in terms of recruiting in that area.

"We'll be able to go down there on Friday and get out and see some games with our coaches," said Kelly. "So certainly being able to go down there will help us in that perspective."

The Irish can provide recruits from the area with tickets to the game, but they are not actually allowed to have contact with them at AT&T Stadium.

"A bump would probably be a good word," Kelly said of what being in the Dallas area will do for Texas recruiting. "Is it going to seal the deal for us in a lot of these instances? Probably not, but it certainly helps to have the kind of exposure there."

On Andrew Hendrix's Role in the Offense

"I don't know that you can go into the game and say I'm just happy with a half-dozen snaps," Kelly said of Hendrix. "I hope that, and the way we presented it to Andrew is, look you've gotta help us win. You've gotta help us win football games. So his mindset has to be look I want to keep adding more to my plate. I want more and more."

"But he's gotta be more effective than he was on Saturday. He can't go in there and we get two false start penalties. We can't miss a wide open receiver. We've gotta do a better job on our zone read. If he's going to get more on his plate he's gotta be more productive and we need him to be more productive."

On Cole Luke and Devin Butler

"I think both of those freshman corners have shown not only the physical ability, but (also) the mental capacity to be able to go in there and compete," said Kelly.

"Cole has done a nice job and early on I think we went with him, because he was able to pick up and grasp some of the concepts a little bit earlier, but Devin has done a really nice job. This week he was our special teams player of the week for his physical play on special teams. We see a young man there that's growing quickly as well."

On Sheldon Day's Status

"He's better than he was last week," Kelly said of the defensive end that has missed two games with an ankle injury. "We thought he had a chance to play and then he didn't look very good in pregame and (there are) a lot of reasons for it. I don't even want to get into some of the things in pregame."

Kelly says Day should be able to contribute this weekend.

On How Tommy Rees Should Handle the Abuse He is Getting Via Social Media

"Look, if you're the starting quarterback at Notre Dame and if you can't handle those things that are inevitably going to come your way after a loss," Kelly began. "Then you can't be the quarterback at Notre Dame. It comes with the business of being the quarterback at Notre Dame. You have to avoid the noise - when it's good and when it's bad. That's just the nature of it. It comes with being the quarterback at Notre Dame."

On Getting George Atkinson III Run More Physically Against Oklahoma

"He knew that he was not going to get the share that he wanted - the share meaning the carries - unless he did the things that we were demanding," said Kelly. "That was run with more authority and utilized his size, because we know about his speed."

Kelly says he and his coaching staff had told Atkinson repeatedly that he was not running physically enough, but it took the running back watching "clip after clip" of himself on video to show him evidence that he had to do a better job of running through ankle tackles. Kelly now hopes that Atkinson can continue what he started last Saturday with a more physical style of play.

On Louis Nix's Increased Reps

"Louis played 72 snaps (against Oklahoma)," Kelly said of the nose guard. "Last year he was averaging in the mid-40s to 50. The volume is up. He had zero loafs and he played a whale of a football game, but he's playing a lot of football. He's playing a lot of football."

Ben Councell

Ben Councell's suspension for the first half of this Saturday's game was not overturned. Councell was flagged for targeting when he hit an Oklahoma receiver in the face mask with the crown of his helmet on Saturday. The outside linebacker was immediately ejected from the game and the new targeting rule stipulates that a player must sit out the following half of a game after such an ejection (if it would have happened in the first half of last week's game he would have only had to sit for the second half of that game, but since it happened in the second half he must sit out the first half of this week's game).

With Councell out, Kelly says Romeo Okwara will be the "next man in" at the drop linebacker position behind Jaylon Smith.

question and honestly have no clue and i apologize if it has already been covered.

say we don't get to play navy or air force hypothetically. would those two games be counted as forfeits if we don't get them replaced on the schedule?

I've been wondering this as well. I saw on the ticker on ESPN that Boston College is in constant communication with Army for this weeks game and is attempting to help with revenue funds or something to get Army up to Boston. They are also looking for a backup game if needed. This is very interesting to say the least.

Even if Boston College helps fund them i still don't think they play, unfortunately this is more than about the money. I hate the fact that politics is ****ing these football players over

Feeling better about this game for some reason. I think we run down their throat and unleash a can of whoop arse to send them back to AZ licking their wounds.

Now we need Michigan and OK to win some games to make us look better, or at least make me feel better about myself.

I agree, I think the game plan will be similar to last week: win the battle up front and run the ball (NO TURNOVERS), then don't give up any big plays to Taylor Kelly and Grice. If we do that I like our chances.

For what it's worth, the PAC-12 and west coast pundits out here aren't very confident in ASU.

They're certainly rooting for em, but they think ND is still too tough for them.

this seems to be the case for the shamrock series....more of a recruiting tool for the next year's recruiting class than the current year's after looking at the abundance of 2015's on that list

I know our defense is a bit down from last year but we should be the more physical team this game. I think for the rest of the year we need to "return to our roots" of last year and run the ball. As much as I'd love to see a high powered offense come to Notre Dame it's not going to happen this year with Tommy Rees. We should run a power running/ball control offense to help our struggling defense.

his weekend’s game may be off-site, but make no mistake, for Notre Dame, the recruiting game is still on.

The Irish’s latest Shamrock Series game will bring them to Arlington, Texas for a primetime Saturday night matchup with Arizona State inside AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Shamrock Series was designed to help Notre Dame further its brand around the nation and there’s no area that can directly impact the future of the program on the field more than through recruiting. The Irish have had several prospects attend previous Shamrock Series games in Chicago, Baltimore and New York City, but this weekend’s game in Texas could feature more recruits on hand than ever before.

While a couple of highly-rated seniors are expected in the house, the majority of the recruits will be underclassmen from the Southwest, mostly Texas and Louisiana.

2014 Bishop Dunne (Dallas) teammates Nick Watkins and Payton Hendrix will get a preview of Notre Dame a couple weeks before trekking up to South Bend for official visits for the Irish’s game against the Trojans later this month. Watkins is probably Notre Dame’s best bet at an elite cornerback in the Class of 2014 and Hendrix is definitely one of their best shots at a highly-ranked safety. They’ll be joined on Saturday by another teammate, 2015 defensive tackle Darrion Daniels, who landed an offer from Notre Dame last month.

In addition to Daniels, a couple other 2015 Texas targets who already hold Irish offers are expected to be in attendance in defensive end James Lockhart and safety Justin Dunning. A host of other junior prospects from Texas will be on hand including South Oak Cliff teammates running back Jordan Stevenson, defensive lineman/linebacker Jalen Goss and defensive lineman/offensive lineman Kameron Stubblefield.

2015 Texas offensive lineman Abdul Beecham has also confirmed his plans to be at the game as have 2015 quarterback Chason Vigil and his West Mesquite teammate, 2015 wide receiver Akilian Butler. Vigil already has offers from Texas, Clemson, Nebraska and UCLA among others while Butler holds an offer from Clemson.

A handful of Louisiana prospects will also be in attendance, led by 2015 Irish offensive line commit Jerry Tillery. This will be two weeks in a row for Tillery seeing Notre Dame play as he was in South Bend last weekend for the Oklahoma game. The Irish are doing all they can to keep Tillery’s attention firmly directed toward them.

Other Louisiana targets expected to be at the game include 2015 tight end Michael Dunman, 2015 defensive tackle Jozie Milton and possibly 2015 defensive tackle T.D. Moton, who already holds an offer from Notre Dame and is friendly with Tillery. 2015 Arkansas tight end Will Gragg could also be at AT&T Stadium after receiving a huge rush of interest from Notre Dame since Sept. 1st.

Those are just the prospects who have either directly confirmed their plans or said they strongly intend on going. There are several other prospects from the Southwest who are hoping to work out their travel plans or schedule in order to attend.

Some of the bigger names in that category include 2015 Texas linebacker Malik Jefferson, who figures to be an elite prospect in the upcoming class, 2015 Texas running back Chris Warren, who already has offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas. The Irish are hoping a trio of Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City, Texas) 2015 teammates, quarterback J.W. Ketchum, running back Davon Crookshank and defensive back Kendall Sheffield (pictured), take them up on the offer to attend. Other possible attendees include Larry Pryor, a big-time 2015 Texas wide receiver, and 2015 Texas tight end Jordan Davis, who is currently committed to Texas A&M.

It’s clear the Irish are going after the top players in the Southwest, including some who are already committed to schools like Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma among others. They won’t all come, but the bottom line is Notre Dame is trying to get as many of the top targets in the region as possible inside Jerry World on Saturday night to give them the chance to see Irish football in person.

Getting them in the stadium is one thing and given the pageantry and electricity that comes with a Notre Dame football game regardless of where it’s played, it’s a big thing, possibly the biggest. But giving the prospects a show worth watching is another.

With the possible exception of the USC game, the outcome of this game and Notre Dame’s performance should have as much of an impact on the way the prospects view Notre Dame coming out of it as any.

The Irish staff can provide tickets to the game to recruits, but direct contact with them is extremely limited. Almost a 1,000 miles south of the Grotto and the Gug, there will be no campus tours and no academic presentations.

Recruits will surely be impressed by the special uniforms the Irish wear for the game each year and they’re likely to be taken aback by the broad, national fan base Notre Dame brings. They’ll definitely be watching their individual position groups, trying to see if they’d be fits stylistically, they’ll be looking to see the attitude and swag of the players and the way the coaches handle situations on the sidelines.

But in the end, winning the game will be important.

Saturday night represents a huge opportunity for Notre Dame’s 2013 season and beyond.

Murtaugh just posted his preview of the ASU game:

1 Prediction

My confidence for a victory in this game is pretty low.

First, Notre Dame will likely need to employ an offensive strategy that the coaching staff hasn't proven it will stick with for four quarters. The insistence on so many empty-sets and making Tommy Rees throw down field has not only befuddled and enraged Irish fans, but now it's making outsiders scratch their heads too.

Arizona State is giving up 192 yards per game on the ground (93rd nationally) and that's with holding Sacramento State to 51 yards on 31 carries. In their previous 3 games against Wisconsin, Stanford, and USC the Sun Devils have surrendered 718 yards at 6.08 per carry and 9 touchdowns. Granted, those are 3 good/great rushing attacks but each of them gained at least 200 yards against Arizona State.

The Sun Devils have decent size at linebacker but they aren't very big up front on their line. Not only are they being gashed on the ground but ASU isn't as disruptive on defense as they were last year. In short, this doesn't look to be a very good defense and Notre Dame should really run the heck out of the ball and stay patient because I don't know if the Irish can stop the Sun Devil offense when they are on the field.

This Irish defense is built to stop the likes of Michigan State and if Arizona State isn't all the way on the other end of the spectrum they aren't far from it. So Todd Graham's offense is built to give a defense like Notre Dame's all kinds of fits: up-tempo, quick passing game, attack the edges, mobile quarterback. This is not good news for an Irish defense that hasn't played well this year and will face ASU on the turf in Arlington.

Arizona State is averaging 44.3 points per game, 358 passing yards per game, and 505 total yards per game. The only thing they're not doing very well is running the ball (85th nationally and just 4.0 yards per carry) but they've also played very good run defenses too. Plus, you know when they say those short passes in the spread offense are equal to runs? Well, both Grice (109 yards from scrimmage per game) and Foster (85 yards per game) are being productive even if they aren't tearing it up on the ground.

Notre Dame not only has to control the clock on offense and run the ball with a lot of success but also finish most drives with touchdowns. On defense, the Irish should do well against the run and desperately need to turn in a good performance defending the short passing game.

Out of the 10 things Notre Dame hasn't done well this season they'll need to do 7 or 8 of those things very well to win against Arizona State. I'm not very confident this is going to happen.

The Sun Devils have the better quarterback, their offense is more explosive, and they've been injected with a lot of JUCO recruits to give them some physically developed talent. Graham's stocked ASU with 25 JUCO's, 11 of which are having an impact this season, and 6 of which are starting.

I didn't like this matchup back in the pre-season and I like it less after seeing both teams play. Going into the bye week at 3-3 should be super fun!
