BS, but happy AZ State won. Good chance they're 4-1 and ranked when we play them.

Very similar to what happened with Akron against Michigan. If you didn't see, Akron has first down at the Michigan 11. I think on second down they complete a pass which was originally spotted at the half yard line (which looked like a pretty good spot) with about 23 seconds to go. They were given a first down. Arkon lines up to run a play (clock ticking) and all of a sudden the ref blows the whistle to stop play at about 15 seconds and says the play is under review. After the review the ref says the receiver was down at the 1, re-spots the ball and says that it third and half yard to go and they leave the clock at 15 seconds. Now, what I couldn't figure out, and obviously the BTN announcers were not going to comment on this, was that if the series started at the 11, the ball is spotted at the 1, how is it not a first down? Big difference between first and goal from the half yard line with 23 seconds versus 3rd at the one with 15 seconds.

For those of you who remain unimpressed with Taylor Kelly after the Wisconsin showdown, here's Bill Connelly's Football Study Hall on the game:

Despite youth in the secondary, I think pretty highly of this Wisconsin defense; and the Badgers' defense certainly controlled ASU up front. But Taylor Kelly and the ASU passing game were magnificent and came up with just enough big-play bailouts on passing downs to get the lead.

I fear Kelly. He's the fastest QB we'll face, has a rocket arm, and he ruined an otherwise impressive defensive performance from Wiscy by extending plays with his legs and hitting fade after fade on 3rd downs.

Completely agree. People have been saying Gardner is the fastest/best QB we will face all year... Kelly, at the moment, will have a huge game against this defense unless we fix some of the issues.

The potential is there, but his offense may be more beat up than what ND will be when the game is played. They have a brutal schedule before they play the Irish. That is one thing we do have going in our favor.

True. Wisconsin - Stanford - USC - ND is an absolutely brutal 4-game stretch. They may end up limping into Jerry World.

And I'm not predicting a loss. I was just surprised to see how dismissive some of our fans were of his performance against Wiscy. He was unstoppable with those 4th Q Fade routes.

They'll beat Stanford if their D can step up. Not sure it can though. Is Sutton hurt?

I'm chalking this up as an L unless our D shows huge improvement. I do think we'll be able to score on them if we get tough and run the ball.

Our O-line missed an awful lot of assignments last week. Check out Mele from ISD's Chalk Talk. When we executed lanes were wide open - just way too many miscues. Same thing happened last year, where there were a lot of mistakes and it continually got better as the year went on. Hopefully we can do the same and keeping improving this year. The talent is there, we just need to execute.

I am also going to give Nick Martin and Ronnie Stanley a break considering it was only their third game. Compared to last year where it was Golic and Cave.

It actually was the veterans just as much as the young guys, surprisingly.

I REALLY like USC's defense. Pendergast has been as good as advertised.

Might have the best D in the NCAA when all is said and done. Their pass rush, and defensive front in general, is awesome. Their JUCOs they brought in are really great. Their pass defense is young but uber talented.

It's shocking just how bad their O has been with all of their skill position talent. If they get it on track... watch out.

Yeah, it was horrendous. It was really bad against Temple too but no one paid attention because, well, it was Temple.

I want to see us use more 12 personnel and actually force teams to play with more than 6 or 7 in the box. If we can start running against the fronts we're currently being shown then passing opportunities will be wide open all over the place.

As long as Rees can properly kill the play clock in the 4th quarter to set up a game-winning FG, we'll be fine.

We should also consider though that the OL has only given up 3 sacks all year. By this time last year we had given up 7 already, and with a more mobile QB.

I was actually referring more to the run game assignments then pass protection. I don't think the pass protection has been an issue this year so far. It's the missed assignments in the run game that has not allowed us to establish an effective ground game IMO.

We got it!

And it isn't just all the run game assignments. Case in point. ND's running touchdown against Purdue. Cam McDaniel said it, "I wanted to thank the offensive line because anybody could have run through that hole. If you saw that whole hole it was truck fleet sized. And that was while Purdue was still in it.

It is simple Christian Lombard is the worst. Everyone including Zack and Chris has done it once. And please understand with his quickness, size and strength, I think of him as more than a mere mortal. So why, when pulling, or part of a double team can't he keep track of the guy he is supposed to end up blocking. He is regularly beating his linebacker to the hole. He is bringing sixty pounds more, he has to belly back more, and he still gets to the hole far enough ahead of the defender that he has "won." Why then does he look away from where he came, to the outside, like he is looking for the contain man to give up and "crash?" He needs to look for the scraping linebacker coming across, so from inside out. That is the fill. So he either stops (in the hole) or participates in a meaningless double team that plugs the hole, while the guy that he should be getting is in position behind him, between him and the running back, to make the play.

To boil the running game problems down to one truism, what do you think of this?

The linemen are looking outside to in to find someone to block behind and up to the line of scrimmage, and the running backs are looking inside out, instead if looking for the contain man, when past the line of scrimmage, looking for the crease. Correct just these two things and "Lawd ha' mercy!"

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State assistant athletic director Sherman Morris has resigned, several weeks after being arrested in an alleged domestic-violence incident.

University officials announced Tuesday that Morris resigned Friday. The assistant AD for football recruiting had been on administrative leave since early September.

Morris was arrested by police in suburban Chandler on one count of aggravated assault-serious physical injury and one count of aggravated assault-strangulation on Aug. 29.

Court documents say Morris allegedly grabbed his wife from behind and lifted her off the ground while choking her at their Chandler home. Police say Morris' wife had bruises on her arm, broken teeth and a laceration that was still bleeding when officers arrived.

Morris was hired by ASU in March after six seasons at Louisiana State, where he was director of player personnel.

Hey now. IIRC, several of our board members (as well as my father) are ASU grads. Their ROI numbers are pretty average; middle tercile across the board.

Note my italics my man, just joshing around. I remember some banter few seasons ago were people were bagging on ASU academics without any evidence so i thought id throw it in.

Seriously though this Morris dude is a dirtbag
