The Coverage Man Cometh... I like that one a bit better. We have pass rushers, we need LB's that can cover like a corner and Jaylon can certainly grow into that type of player.

I was a little disappointed I didn't hear his name much and he did get a nice stuff arm from the qb and put to the ground by it which stunk. Hope he comes back strong and gets a pick 6 next week!!!

Yeah he sucked for an 18 year old playing in his first ever college game. Put him on the bench for the rest of the year.

When did I say put him on the bench? I'd take him over Councell every time. I was just surprised to see a qb stuff arm him to the ground like that is all.

You can rationalize it if you want, but the OP was right. Jaylon did not play well today. Hopefully it was a learning experience for him and he progresses next week. Temple targeted him a lot today, and won in most cases.

Yea, that was an "oh, shits" moment I didn't expect to happen. Welcome to college football, Jaylon.

I'm not saying he didn't play poorly...but you have to play him every week, because he will improve every week.

I mean I don't know what you guys expected from him...to be Anthony Barr? If I was an opposing coach I would target a true freshman every play also. he just needs experience.

I agree with this..How many times did you hear Danny Spond's name last year? Jaylon plays a position that you usually don't hear his name unless he did something great or poor.

Well... yes and no about what Diaco expects from DOG. Spond averaged about four tackles per game last season, and directly broke up a pass every other game. The DOG role vs rushes is to set the edge so that the runner must funnel back into Te'o or Foxabreese, thus fewer "personal tackles".

Coach said that Jaylon doesn't have the "fits" [curls] correct yet. He had no reason to complain about that with Danny Spond, and THAT is why losing Danny is actually a big deal. Jaylon will surely figure it out but, no, he did not play a good game [yet].

Heres a quote from the SB Tribune: "(jaylons) coverage and rerouting of receivers impressed Temple coach Matt Thule. "Jaylon for them was the real deal now," he said. "Some of the things we wanted to do, he took out of the game right away. So he's the real deal.""

So that's a more positive perspective of Jaylons play.

see these are the things our couchcoaches on here fail to realize...can't always take each play at face value because things are happening we are unable to see w/out film and slowing things down...this is a GREAT sentiment to his play in first game, but is a Large part of his role..while he might not show up as a stat monster, these things go unnoticed ..much like nix clogging up the middle while others get the tackle

Disagree. He didn't play as well as Danny Spond would have but I wouldn't say he didn't play good.

I would. He didn't play bad, but if you guys are saying that he played "good", then you were watching a different game. I even rewatched the game this morning, he made a lot of mistakes.

Before the snap he looked like he knew what he was doing. Once the ball was snapped he made mistakes. As a freshman, I like seeing that he knows the defense. The rest will come, especially for someone so talented.

Many say Jaylon Smith was born to play football. It's my opinion that he was, in fact, born to hunt skunkbears. Beat scUM.

I believe that skunkbears are classified as pests and regarded as below rats in the hierarchy. They are therefore "in season" year round and can be taken by rifle, handgun, bow, spear, trap or vicious tackles at any time of the year.

When the defense was facing me at the game and when Jaylon was on the field he got down in position like a predator on the pry. He looked to be ready at all times. Let's hope his breakout game is this week against Michigan.

He certainly looked like he wanted to light somebody up...though I didn't see it happen. He's only going to improve with time because he's too great of an athlete not to. I wanted to point out his stance...It's definitely unique being very wide from front to back. Seems to me that it should be wider from side to side so he can go laterally a bit easier. I remember watching his film last year and thinking it looked "different"...good for going forward and backward and not so good for going side to side. Please don't hate on me...I love this guy. Just wondering if anyone else picked up on this?

I noticed his stance as well, but it looked like Councell was exactly the same. This seems to be a product of coaching. It's not the stance I teach our OLBs, but I trust Diaco.

I'm sure the coaching staff has noticed this in practice. If it was a concern they would correct it. If he just started doing it against Temple and the staff doesn't like it, you will see a different stance against scUM.

I also remember another freshman ILB that didn't set the world on fire his first few games.

exactly, Councell had the exact stance as Jaylon, so one has to think that is a coached stance and may be specific to the DOG position. Not sure I see the point of such a stance other than maybe disguising when the DOG will blitz or just fall into coverage, but Diaco knows a whole lot more than me, so I wont judge it.

Some of you guys act like Jaylon did not play well which from what I saw would be very wrong.

The stances are play and formation specific. They line up in a couple different stances depending on what their job on that play is. No linebacker sees the field without being able to line up correctly and do their jobs correctly. They all have to get the Diaco seal of approval.

I'm not sure if some of you had drastically higher expectations of a single game performance from Jaylon or what, but the kid did fine. Way more than fine for a freshman.
