Where is the 14 coming from? If we group Cats with the OLBs, then ideal OLB depth is 8/8. If we group them with the DL, then ideal DL depth is 16/16. Am I missing something?

The 14 is coming from his own calculation of what the DL depth should be based on his own rules for recruiting (3 players per year x 4 years + 2 because we run the 4-3 as much as the 3-4). It doesn't appear he was considering CATs as DL. I like where OMM's head's at here.

Whiskey, are the ideal numbers you often refer to your own calculation or is this something the staff has outlined in the past? Where can the numbers be found? I don't see the ideal numbers on the spreadsheet you often link, only the players listed by class and position.

Alabama recruits 3* as well. Every team has a few 3*. Expecting a class of only 5* and 4* players will get you a losing team. Besides, I remember a TE that was a 3* and turned about pretty decent; I think his name was Eifert or something.

I am happy for his recruitment but I don't get **** like this, do I need to point out all the 3* that never pan out. You can't point out the exception and call it the rule. :swordfigh

New recruiting strategy a la other coaches like Sarkesian at UW? They didn't do this before IIRC

“@CoachKerryCooks: And the boat keeps filling up....stay tuned”

Tweeted 30 mins before commitment was announced.

"@coachmcdermott7: Lets GO IRISH! Got better today!”

“@MikeDenbrock: We continue to build. Foundation set, walls going up and by 2015 the Roof will be secure. Can't Wait! Why are you? #GoIrish ! #Family”

“@CoachSBooker: #goldenarmy14
Who's next????
Who's ready to compete at the highest level on the field and in the classroom? Who wants to chase greatness??”

Some great quotes in there.

I totally agree but I think his point was more to the fact that a 3 star CAN become a superstar and often are important cogs in the schemes of successful teams. You could also point out all the 4-5 star guys who don't pan out too. The right guy with the right mentality is what we are looking for and this guy fits it.

who tweeted that? Denbrock, or did someone tweet it at him?

I look forward to the day when our roof is secure and we no longer accept 3 star players.

A lot of these posts talking about building a foundation and Bama recruits three star players assume the staff sees him as a three star player which I don't think they do. The staff really wanted Brent when he was a three star and third WR in IN, now he's borderline 5:s: status on 247 and by the way TJ on II talks the staff has always thought that highly of him. IMO Bonner and Byrne are these three star foundation players but not Blankenship. TJ on II also speaks very highly about Blankenship, higher IMO than he did on Nelson.

You simply cannot place a star on a person's passion and desire to play the game they love, at a school they grew up loving. I am very happy to welcome this young man(and Bonner too). Congratulations to Grant and the entire Blankenship family, so glad that you have found the place you wanted to be cannot wait to see you in the blue and gold chasing down opposing QB's and one day hoisting that BCS trophy.

Yo, Lionel

Check STL's post about halfway up this page.

You're slow

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was quoting it from his post, not as though I found it. I wasn't sure of the author and the 2015 comment struck me as curious.

You can look at it like building a house. First, you lay the foundation of good material (check). Then you put in the less glamorous stuff that ensures your structure won't fall down (an unglamorous but ultimately crucial step) (check), then you use your remaining budget to top it off with the niceties - granite counters, marble floor, crown molding, etc.

Love this. Exactly how I see it. We get the essential depth guys and then we chase the superstars with our remaining spots. If you try to do the reverse, you end up with holes in the class a la Chaz Weis.

Love the commit. Welcome Grant.

I believe the tweet was from Denbrock's name...

And to extrapolate, I would assume they mean "walls" as DLinemen and LB''s

So, the "roof" would mean DB's? I would think

The 14 is coming from his own calculation of what the DL depth should be based on his own rules for recruiting (3 players per year x 4 years + 2 because we run the 4-3 as much as the 3-4). It doesn't appear he was considering CATs as DL. I like where OMM's head's at here.

I don't have a problem with grouping ROLBs with the DL. I just don't see how it changes anything from a numerical standpoint.

None of the guys we're currently listing as DL are likely to end up at ROLB (though Trumbetti could probably do it).

Whiskey, are the ideal numbers you often refer to your own calculation or is this something the staff has outlined in the past? Where can the numbers be found? I don't see the ideal numbers on the spreadsheet you often link, only the players listed by class and position.

I'm confused because OMM's influence was crucial to my concept of ideal depth. 22 unique positions on the field (offense + defense) x 4 = 88 scholarships. Team limit is 85, so we borrow a few from the OL. Thus, roughly 4 deep at every position is ideal depth.

TJ on II also speaks very highly about Blankenship, higher IMO than he did on Nelson.

if that 2015 comment was from Denbrock, I wonder why they feel it will take 6 years and 6 recruiting classes before they have built a "complete house."

Re-read that tweet.

Or, you aren't very good at math

Here's what he had to say:

This is a very big and important commitment here. A big upside future DE perfect for the 3-4 base front and also fits our multiple fronts as well. Capable of helping out initially at "Cat" OLB where he has the length, leverage, aggressiveness and movement skills, plus natural athleticism off the edge at this stage, to provide depth at least and compete/challenge for some playing time as a pass rusher when needed. Make no mistake, though -- this is a future DE with big upside for what we want.

It's also timely, both in terms of our recruiting (and I don't suggest that in a negative sense, as some might interpret) and in terms of his recruiting with Oklahoma. Sooners (and some other big ones) made a very big recent push with Grant, and with good reason.

Yes, it's possible I am both bad at math and misunderstood what he meant. Kelly's first recruiting class was 2010 right? '10, '11, '12, '13, '14, '15 is 6 recruiting classes, right?

Did I misunderstand the 2015 comment? he was talking about building the house.

I don't think he would base his tweet off of a 2010 recruiting class

Call it a hunch, but I think that he's looking to the future, and not "building his walls" with Chris Martin or Aaron Lynch

again, I may be misunderstanding what he's saying, but why not? that's when Kelly's regime took over, no? Were the first three classes mulligans or practice?

The 2010 class wasn't really Kelly's; he mostly just held it together for a couple months after Weis got fired. 2011 was his first full recruiting class.

Are you trying to play devil's advocate here?

Is that what it is?

Should we also talk about how well Hiestand recruited before he got here (last year)

Or, how well Hinton and Warinner are doing?

I understand (he signed 8 of the 23, with one member [Nix] verballing with no head coach).

So I will revise my prior question, why does Denbrock feel as though they are just now, starting with 2013, beginning to build the house? Why do they get 5-1/2 years and 5 full recruiting classes? what was 2011, and 2012?

No, just trying to understand what the first three seasons and 2 full recruiting classes prior to 2013 meant to the coaching staff.

Their is about a paragraph on the grades provided by kaneyoufeelit in case anyone was wondering.

Key:

80-89 – Very Good/Outstanding: Skill set is a significant strength

4 – Very Good/Outstanding: Player is a potential standout and starter, could also play early
