I consulted him on this hire while up there last week. He was on the fence but I asked to push it through. You're welcome. ;)

Just seems to me that recruiting for UT or Alabama would be world's different than for Notre Dame?

I would agree. The experience and perspective should lend some insight and possibly new and more creative ideas. ND is already doing very well in recruiting-this hire will only add to that IMO. Just think, maybe the 5 stars will stay?

"Oversigning"- Nope, Tommy TT assured us that's a myth not an SEC recruiting tactic.

"Newtonian Acquistion" - NCAA closed that loophole.

"Greyshirting" - This is Notre Dame, Jenkins isn't having any of that. EVEN IF he did, not many recruit's parents are going to eat $50K for "maybe next year".

"Means Manipulation" - See, This is ND and Fr Jenkins.

"But you'll be playing in the SEC" - That gem is N.A. Besides, at ND, you play on the national stage ... every Saturday the relatives can tune in from Bangor to Honolulu to watch you.

"Long Term Committment" - He was at Bama in December, Tennessee in January, and "moved on to ther things" in the first week of April. Has he got Nancy Sinatra "These boots were made for walkin' " Syndrome. Or, was his new UT boss to difficult to work for? I seriously doubt he resigned from UT in early April and then took two months to announce he was leaving UT for ND and wanted 10 weeks unpaid vacation before starting the new job.

"Calculus" - If Holtz, Weis, and Kelly couldn't get Michigan style admissions and classwork, a Director of Recruiting sure isn't going to get SEC academically challenged prospects in either.

I'm also puzzled by his reported compensation, $50K, at UT. I realize salary wise he wasn't an on the field assistant coaching a position, and he wasn't making in the field talent evaluations, nor making in-home closings visits BUT he left The world's greatest football coach, Nick Saban, after assisting in two Top recruiting classes and being on a twice WORLD Championship team. Why would he leave Tommy's wet dream for only $50K. Was he an unpaid volunteer (no pun intended) at UA? Would Nick not pay him what he was worth?

The recruiting rankings indicate the young man apparently works hard and is good at his craft but his quick tour of duty, TDY, at UT is curious.

JR Sandlin joins football support staff | Inside the Irish

Notre Dame has added a new member to its football staff, with J.R. Sandlin joining the administrative side of the program. Sandlin will help the Irish’s recruiting efforts as well as handle other behind the scenes duties for the program.

The move comes after head coach Brian Kelly lost one of his key behind-the-scenes staffers earlier this year when director of football personnel Tim McDonnell took a scouting position with the New York Giants.

Sandlin won’t be filling McDonnell’s role directly, but is more than capable of playing a role in the Irish recruiting efforts. He spent part of last year working as Tennessee’s director of recruiting for Derek Dooley, but left the program in April after Butch Jones took over.

“J.R. has moved on and is no longer part of the program,” Jones told the Knoxville News Sentinel in April.

Tennessee’s loss seems to be the Irish’s gain, and Sandlin will bring with him the experience of being part of Alabama’s recruiting machine, where he spent three years managing the day to day operations of the Tide’s recruiting efforts.

Before that, Sandlin spent two years working as a recruiting specialist for UCF, where he played tight end for George O’Leary at Central Florida.

I'd think fine. He seems to be filling more of an administrative/logistical/office type of position than an out-and-out on the road and in living rooms recruiting position.

I don't think it'll be all that different than working at ut or alabama.

I thinik he also provides invaluable info about the interworkings of SEC recruiting, and SE experience in general.

Just accept now that the mighty Cyclones can have any recruit of ours that they want. And there is nothing we will ever be able to do about it.

Doesn't the NCAA still limit on the road and in home recruiting to full time on the field coaches?

The rule was created to stop Vinny Cerrato.
