Wasn't shumate already pretty much named the starter?

No, not that I know of, but I don't think there's any doubt that Farley and Shumate will be the top two safeties, based on the way things went in the spring. The only question is how the depth chart plays out behind them and how much other guys like Collinsworth, Baratti, Redfield and Hardy rotate in.

I listened to the rare comments by the staff on Baratti pretty carefully; they seem to think that he's plenty good on coverage, smart as he!l, hits like a train [he was being looked at as a DOG linebacker for a while], and VERY athletic.

So until I get different facts, I'll say that anyone who can beat Nicky Baratti out of a job is REALLY good. Having said that, I believe that Collingsworth is really good, and that Shumate COULD be if he can figure out the position, which Diaco said he was "light years" from doing.

My view is apparently unpopular [as I tend to want the best system-functioning player on the field instead of the guy with the fanciest eye-test], but I think that SuperMax will face potentially stronger competition from Collingsworth and Baratti to start alongside Farley [who I think is a given] than from Shumate in 2013.

If Matthias himself does not have the DB-quarterback job [that Zeke and Harrison before him had] downpat yet, then the other safety will have to do it. That also would favor a veteran who is not light years away from figuring it out.

Smart coaches tend agree with your logic and will in fact put the best functioning player on the field.

Jack's my cousin. I was going on this:

I had assumed that 56 was accurate, not a vanity adjusted number.

Oh, and here's the obligatory (though unnecessary in my opinion) Winkie Thingy ;).

56 is accurate. I don't know why I said that other than your youthful tone and I feel like my aging is accelerating.

Which number is more cursed... 5 or 19?

19... The last two 19s had a combined 2 years on the team. Anyone who takes that number should be sat down and educated on what getting a girl pregnant before marriage can do to one's aspirations.

2 transfers vs. 1 Heisman finalist/imaginary gf situation and a poor academic attitude. Gonna go with #19.

But previous number 5s (Rhema McKnight and Armando Allen) got plagued by some devastating injuries.

And getting Catfished by someone and then having it turn into a national story that eventually blows up in your face is some pretty outrageously bad luck.

I guess that possibly rules out him playing offense, right? Unless he changes numbers since Davaris is already #10. I know you can not have 2 players with the same number on the field at the same time but can you have 2 players on the roster who play on the same side of the ball with the same number? I would think that would be against the rules since it could be used as a tactical advantage over the other team, they might not be able to tell which #10 was on the field and ND doesn't have names on the jerseys.

5 is also the number Anzalone originally said he was going to get. He changed it later but I'm sure he first said he was going to be 5.

Well i don't think we have to worry about getting a penalty for having Daniels and Redfield on the field at the same time
