Sigh, these are all the same arguments hashed out before... I get he's a 5 star, freak, and incredibly gifted, but unless he jumps one of the two, it's not happening. Not enough offensive plays to get everyone the ball. It was a consensus that Amir is the feature back, BK said GA 3 needed to get more touches and is looking like a complete back; where do you exactly see Bryant getting any kind of significant touches that are worth burning a year? You think he's going to be a Keith Marshall and get 100+ as a freshman? Only way that happens is if he jumps someone on the depth chart. This isn't a hard concept, it's just not enough to feed 3 backs, someone has to be the odd man out, so who is it?

Edit/add: in 2012 we had a 3 back system with GA getting 50 touches... In 2009 we had a 3 back system with Cierre/Armando/Hughes, with Hughes touching about 5 times a game... Really don't think I'm far-fetched in saying Bryant RS if he's getting 4-5 touches a game

Bryant could easily pass up Atkinson because Atkinson is a one trick pony, all he has is speed. Now I hope he developed into a complete running back during the off-season but we don't know if he did. And Amir Carlisle is injury prone. Bryant isn't red shirting and I wouldn't be surprised if he is the starting back in some games this year

Cierre and Armando were one trick ponies as well their soph years. Cierre couldn't hit a hole to save his life and both were easily tackled if you touched a fabric on their uniform... But you're right, like I've said the whole time, if he jumps someone or there's an injury, he's getting more touches and will not rs.... However, this discussion is based on Amir healthy and GA being more involved. That would make Bryant at least third in the rotation. When this first came up months ago, Amir wasn't expected to start, many assumed Bryant would be #1 because of reasons you stated.. Now we have the coaches, players, and posters saying Amir will be the feature. We have coaches saying GA has packed on weight/muscle and is beginning to act like a complete back. If one of these players weren't making progress, Bryant could easily jump. But now hell have a 2.5 week training camp to absorb a playbook, intricacies of the offense, and put himself ahead of one of the other big two.

It's a good situation to be in IMO.

You don't RS based on whose staying 3-4 years... You can't predict the future, maybe his sr year he suffers an injury or has an ok year of production, where he doesn't necessarily scream 1st or 2nd day selection, and it's better he comes back for a year... If he was a sr you just crushed any chance of making his stock stronger because you decided it was ok to give him 4 attempts a game as a freshman...

You also don't redshirt based on the depth chart. You put the guys on the field that give you the best chance of winning. If a freshman getting 3, 4, 5 carries a game gives you the best chance to win, then that's the way you play it.

i think it's just extremely too early to speculate the RB position.

regardless of how anything has been done before, or who is still on the roster.

the biggest question to me, is who will be best at blitz pick up and who's going to put their hat on someone.

tangible evidence. GA3 has a ridiculous YPC because of a small handful of big runs. it's still possible he has a little fumble-itis. can he catch? can he block? can he blitz pick up?

Amir, in all honesty, is exciting to think about (and see in small little snippits) but the fact is, he has missed something like 17 or 18 of a total of 24 or 25 eligible games. bad luck? bad genes? too early to tell.

Mahone--no tangible evidence, from spectators observation. Red Zone threat only? ground and pound to kill clock? plus, all of the other questions--hands, catch, block, blitz? how's he do?

Cam--what do you say? hard worker. shifty. can hard work steal from "talent"?

2 legitimate feature backs coming in--how do they assimilate. how game ready are they? how quick do they understand offensive concepts...and again, to me, most important thing--is blitz pick up. you cant put your hat on that OLB--you arent going to play. plain and simple. on top of that--grades, homesick, practice, etc.

in short--we dont know much because none of these guys have proven ANYTHING. GA3 has the most experience and i still have more questions than answers to feel comfortable.

it's time to separate what we "really hope"--as fans and from being emotional from watching these kids since they were juniors in high school, from what is the statistical and eye test answers to who give us the greatest chance to be successful and ave. over 3.5 per play, with limited to no turnovers and will help the passing game beyond their hands.

Excelent post, in other words:

"I see the people in the stands that think they know what the coach should do, and what he should call, and I have no real idea. I just root and pray and hope we win, and I feel bad when we lose. I want the team to win . . . “

Dave Casper

Stated thirdly, you never know how it is going to go with any given player at any given time. You just hope to play the best eleven. And it is a coaches job to do that at the time.

Now this year I expect to see special player groupings on offense. Maybe on defense too. This would be a good way to confuse other teams and get more players in to see action.

Gunner was a top 3 prospect?

Regardless, bringing the QB position into that conversation makes no sense. There is only 1 QB getting reps (typically) throughout the year - compared to almost any other position which not only has multiple players on the field on the same time, but also 2nd team coming in to spell, due to injury, or score board. Just can't compare QBs red-shirting to any other position on the field.

Agreed. And RBs tend to be able to contribute more quickly than many other positions...certainly more quickly than QBs.

Amir will likely get his share of reps in the slot also.

Folston is my darkhorse pick at RB.

The only place I could possibly see folston starting is at the theo position...

No way he could carry the majority of the reps. I don't think his body is ready for that yet.

Is there any word on his health status? Really hoping to see him stay healthy and get on the field.

Mike Frank on ISD was actually asked this question this morning, so he posed to question to his sources in the program and they responded that Amir is "fully healthy".

Not to be dramatic, but I think Amir is the key to a strong start ot our season. I think he will be the early difference maker with GAIII and Bryant stepping up as the season progresses.

Looks like the tackling is being attempted by members of a retirement community. Holy hell. Didn't anyone get the memo that shuffleboard wasn't until 2:30?

Careful now, whippersnapper. We Gray Panthers can be formidable foes --- when not distracted by Bingo, Canasta, Dominoes or other such things.
