I haven't heard the first thing written about academics but I don't really know. Maybe someone else had read something elsewhere.

Can't see Notre Dame offering if they think he can't make the grades.

we have done it before....for kids that are questionable they are given expectations for the offer to be committable....last year david perkins for example was a verbal pledge to us at one time and then mid term grades come out and he decommitts ...he stated it wasn't due to grades although someone who went to school who posts on her confirmed that it was in fact grades..there are tons of others especially our foreign language requirement which this could be in reference to...idk in this case but if his coach stated this...i would believe it

T Town Tommy, maybe you can shed some light on this. And don't take this as an attack, as I respect the heck out of your posting (valued opinion). I was reading a Matt Elam interview and Saban told Matt that he was their #1 target at NT and not to listen to anyone else because he is there #1. As we've documented that's the 3rd player he's said that about. Curious what your thoughts were? Does he do that a lot? Are they at different positions?

Well when Saban told Elam that while on a visit to T Town recently I think Saban was trying to get Elam to commit then. When Elam didn't, Saban turns around and gets a commitment from another DL the very next day. The commit is listed as a DT and Saban wants Elam at NT so I guess you could split hairs a little bit with it.

As far as Saban telling guys that they are his # 1 target...I think he does it a lot and may not really mean it or is simply trying to get their commitment on the spot. I don't particularly care for the technique... I would prefer Saban took the higher road. He doesn't need to recruit like that. Hope this helps answer your question.

Yea, thanks for the input. I imagine all coaches use something to get kids committed on the spot.

I like it better when the recruiting coach tells each player that "everyone here has an equal opportunity to compete for a position and a starting role...we're talking to you because we believe that you have many of the skills and potential necessary to possibly win that competition. We'll do our part coaching and developing you...the rest is up to YOU"

Top 5 of Bama, Kentucky, ND, OSU and Louisville

"Notre Dame offering is big," Elam said. "I don't really know that much about Notre Dame yet. I'm trying to go up there for a visit soon. I know they have a great program, were in the national title game and a have a lot of tradition. It's great to have a big time offer from a program like Notre Dame,"

Notre Dame's message was simple, scheme and opportunity.

"I talked to Coach (Bob) Elliott. He said they play a 3-4, are losing a big-time nose and have a great opportunity for me. He said they really wanted and need me,"

"I have a top five," he said. "They are Kentucky, Alabama, Louisville, Ohio State and now Notre Dame,"

Elam broke down the five standing out.

Kentucky - "In-state school. SEC program. Great coaching staff, and I have built a lot of really good relationships with the players and other recruits. They are right there at the top. They are telling me they will run a four front and are telling me I can play anywhere from a three to a five because of my speed and quickness."

Alabama - "Alabama, national champions. They contend every year for one. Coach Nick Saban is a great coach. I think a lot of people value his opinion. I think it's a better chance for me to get where I want to go, which is the NFL after college. I think it would open up a lot of doors for me and would be a great opportunity."

Louisville - "Louisville, moving to the ACC. I think by far the best coaching staff I have ever been around. Coach Charlie Strong and Coach Carter, I have a great relationship with the coaching staff. They are still in-state, so that is a great opportunity too."

Ohio State - "They are going to be the pre-season No. 1 team and they don't lose a game last year either. I think it's a big-time offer, a great program and it could be a really good opportunity."

Notre Dame - "The offer yesterday was big. They run a 3-4, and I want to play the nose primarily at the next level. They were in the national championship, so that is a plus too."

It's Kentucky vs Alabama, the other three are way further down. If Louisville was in the SEC it would probably be Louisville vs Alabama.

I like the fact that he wants to play NT, I wish more kids wanted to play that position. Its not very glamorous but definitely a need for 3-4 teams. If we can get him to campus then we at least have a shot but until then I am going resign from getting my hopes up.

Very long way to go. By December it'll look a lot different.

While I agree with that statement for the most part. I will say that we closed strong last cycle in large part to a very successful regular season. I don't expect anything like that this year. 9-3 won't create the type of buzz a 12-0 season did.

I don't see ND losing 3 games this year.

We didn't win 12 games because of Golson last year. Whomever is the QB this year will have to avoid making mistakes and let the defense lock teams down. We can win most games scoring a couple of TDs, I think.

Correct. It's not so much about the record. Max Redfield knew after he left ND last year that it was the right place for him. And that was well before we finished 12-0. If all a kid is looking at is a won loss record as a determinant for where to attend school he isn't ND material.

Agreed, and if Elam really cared about win/loss record, Kentucky wouldn't be in his top 2. We offer him early playing time (as I'm sure other schools do as well), but what concerns me is his academics. Hopefully he's up to the challenge.

I haven't read the entire threat, is there reason to be concerned regarding academics or are you speaking in generality?

See posts below...

Will Biggers spoke to his coach and he has some work to do in the classroom

For ND or to pass the clearinghouse?

I think this question is critical to gauging if we have any chance at all. If he has work to do just to clear, can't we cross him off the list for admissions now? Any insight STL?
