Off the top of my head...he will be competing with current players Moore, Rabasa, Grace, Schmidt and possibly Randolph.

I would say that Rabasa and Randolph are not currently at ILB, like Whiskey pointed out its speculation at this point. Grace will be the starting Mike LB so that leaves one spot for Moore, Deeb, and Schmidt. I'd say thats wide open and very little depth. I don't constitute bodies as having depth. Functional players constitutes depth and everything I've seen or heard from Moore and Schmidt is Deeb could easily take that spot as a sophmore.

I do expect Randolph to start at ILB. The alternative is ROLB, which is stacked through 2014. He's got a much better chance of breaking through at ILB, and the need is greater there anyway.

While I think thats a good possibility as well, right now I'd still give a significant edge to Deeb in seeing PT at ILB first do to his experience playing there. We need to keep in mind that while Randolph is athletic, he primarily played with his hand in the ground in HS and learning a whole new position probably takes time.

As do I. I always want to see players push through after they've given so much time to their craft but I just don't see it. He's been on campus for such a long time and according to the staff, he just isn't catching on mentally. Reminds me a lot of Filer. Hopefully it clicks.

It's weird though... seems like he makes plays when he gets in the game during garbage time.

He's a heavy hitter. So you notice when he makes a play, but not necessarily when he blows his assignment, etc. Especially hard to keep track of that stuff in garbage time against an over-matched opponent.

I think Kelly's quote about Moore in his last presser was something like, "He runs, and he hits ... we just have to get him to hit the right people." Lucci compared him to Filer, and I think that's not a bad comparison. No question that Moore has the athleticism. The only question is whether he can learn the position.

That was the quote.

What I like about Deeb is the fact that he has a type A personality. It seems that he has the attitude that NO ONE is going to out work him. Also, it doesn't hurt that he is a fan of the game & a 'super fan' of ND.

TJ made a recent post on II that one reason that the staff may not be concerned is they love Deeb. Not that this is new news as we all love Deeb but it is refreshing that Diaco and company think he can play right away.

He is such a hard worker I can't wait to follow his career at ND.

Bumping this thread because I was reading back in the Jaylon thread and I saw some talk about him starting at WILL next year as a RS freshman. Before reading that, I always assumed Kelly would play Deeb on special teams. But Deeb definitely seems like the type that would take five years. Personally I hope he redshirts, but what do you think/hope will happen in regards to what freshmen from the 2013 class take a RS?

Wish I could be at the practice when Deeb and Bryant run into each other, epic.

I don't think Moore to Filer is an apt comparison. To be honest, I can't even remember Filer ever making a tackle outside of special teams. However, it is pretty obvious that Moore is doing something that the coaches don't like or he would be getting more playing time as he certainly demonstrated the ability to hit people. With that said I am looking forward to seeing Deeb play.

I'm in the minority that thinks Greg will own Deeb in head to heads. Greg has a lot of shake.

Could be but Deeb is kind of like the zombie apocalypse, he's going to keep coming.

Because he tweets pictures of him working out? I like Deeb and think he will be good, but I'm excited to see what these 2013 kids do once they get here, not what they've put on twitter.

You are in the minority then, and that includes the coaching staff. Every 'insider' I have heard from in regards to Deeb is extremely high on him / states the the staff is extremely high on him. TJ on II is especially effusive of Mike, and he says Diaco is just as fired up to have him.

I will bet an awful lot that the plays at least special teams from day 1.

This is how I THINK it will go down.

Offense
QB - Zaire - Redshirt
RB - Bryant & Folston - Both Play
WR - Fuller & Hunter - Redshirt; Robinson & Onwualu - Both Play w/ Onwualu mostly on ST and Robinson in red zone packages.
TE - Heuerman & Smythe - Both Redshirt
OL - I think the coaches would like them all to redshirt, but Elmer may be needed and Bivin may play his way into the lineup (I am really high on Bivin).

Defense
DL - Matuska - Redshirt; Rochell - I think he probably redshirts but I wouldn't be surprised if he played his way into the rotation.
LB - Smith - Plays; I think Deeb and Randolph will "blow" their redshirts playing on ST.
DB - Butler & Kinlaw - Redshirts; Redfield & Luke will "blow" their redshirts playing ST. Redfield may see significant minutes on defense in 2nd half of the season.

Edit:
Summary
Redshirts (12) - Zaire, Hunter, Fuller, Heuerman, Smythe, Montelus, McGovern, McGlinchey, Matuska, Rochell, Butler, Kinlaw
Plays beyond Redshirt requirement (11) - Bryant, Folston, Robinson, Onwualu, Elmer, Bivin, Smith, Randolph, Deeb, Redfield, Luke

I think at least one TE will play, and also at least one DE. Redfield will be playing a LOT by midseason IMO.
