Hunter and Trattou were very solid at Florida

Omar Hunter went undrafted. I almost want to type that in again. Saw an interview online with him where he said de-committing to ND and going to UF was the best decision he ever made.

Darby was pretty damn good at FSU for a freshman. Decker might start as a RSfreshman at OSU. Guarantee both of them get drafted.

I thought there were a bunch of solid players that went undrafted, including him. Tony Jefferson and Chase Thomas are others I didn't really get / don't show how productive they were in college.

LAX, you'll find A LOT more kids that have decommitted and done well more than kids who have transferred and have done well. We have tons of kids that have decommitted from other schools and done well for us, and vice versa. But transfers are a different story.

And I'll add that it goes for most schools. USC has had tons of kids transfer and very few have panned out. There is a reason these kids transfer, and most of the time they are just not good enough (although the reason is usually stated differently). The other reason is off-the-field issues, and those RARELY pan out.

To the transfer list, I'll add Joseph Furia, who had an excellent year at UCLA.

I agree, but for purely selfish reasons, it makes me chuckle that transferring and going undrafted was his "best decision ever". He was a solid college player.

What ND decommits/transfers have gone on to have good careers?

Of those those that have gone on to have good careers, which have had legitimate AA caliber difference making college seasons?

Not rhetorical, looking for a list if anyone has one. Seems an oddly high percentage of indecisive kids (i.e. the ones that get the most ink) are the ones who don't pan out in college. Obviously, with Perkins there were other issues keeping him from ND... so I always hoped he'd pan out.

Tuitt decommitted for a few hours.

Edit: Looks like NDinLA beat me to it, but apparently great minds think alike.

Our buddy star69 on 247 says grades and off the field issues played a major role in the transfer.

Decker did not redshirt. He is a true Sophomore. He is battling for the RT spot with Chase Farris. It is the only open spot in the starting lineup right now, vacated by the graduation of Fragel.

WR David Terrell committed to ND but when Admissions wanted to see academic improvement he balked and committed to Michigan. He had back to back 1,000 yd seasons at UM and made a couple of AA teams. 1st Rounder.

David Nelson decomitted in 2005 and went on to have a decent career at Florida. Where he also won a National Championship.

Greg Little decomitted and went on to have a nice career at UNC.

Also Giovanni Bernand had an awesome career at UNC.

As transfers, Zach Frazier had a pretty good career at UConn, where he also beat the Irish.

Some that just popped in my head that I didn't see mentioned.

wait we almost landed Gerald McCoy? Can I get a story on this one.

Short synopsis of his recruiting profile. There was an early story about his parents rubbing his body with sacred oils in a Pre game ritual. A couple hundred posts in between. And then late in the recruiting season, a report of his girl friend in a family way. Priorities changed. He stayed local became an AA and Charlie got a rap for not being able to close DTs.

I hope Perkins and Dieter have successful college careers. Those are the first two kids that I can ever remember get recruited by big time schools. Dieter should have a good career at BG and I hope Perkins does the same where ever he lands

does randy moss count as a decommit?

should be interesting to see where perkins ends up. can't imagine urban will let him transfer to another big ten school.

OSU has laughable depth at LB as it is, lack of playing time cant be an issue.

Transfers and decommits are a big difference. Seems half the recruits out there decommit during the recruiting process but a much smaller percentage transfer.

Cam Newton and Russell Wilson come to mind for big time transfers. QB would make more sense for break-out ability than many other positions though. Only one spot to fill and hard to unseat an incumbent.

You do have selection bias, if you can't bust through the starting line-up your odds of transfer go up a lot. Therefore, transfers are not top talent on the teams they leave and less likely to excel at a national level elsewhere. Amir Carlisle hopefully breaks that mold.

And flopped miserably with the Bears...given the hype. But, yes, he meets the standard of the thread.

Rumor is that Brutus marched (or was carried on a stretcher) into Urban's office after the Spring Game and demanded that Perkins be dropped from the team.

And yet he may have been the best skill player they developed between Curtis Conway (1993 pick) and Matt Forte (2008 pick). Am I missing anybody in that time frame?

EDIT: oh, the irony. The Bears drafted Greg Olsen in 2007 - the year before they picked up Forte.

Marty Booker was twice as good (that's not saying much) during that time

Plenty of names over the long history of Notre Dame football-both 'decommits and transfers.
Many posters have covered recent names. Here are a few older names:

Decommit
Floyd Little HB-many versions of what happened. One was that Little was getting on the train to head to South Bend when Syracuse HB Ernie Davis meet him at the train station and talked him into heading to play for the Orange instead. Per this story, Little's trunk made it to South Bend but Floyd wasn't with it.

Little is in the CFB HOF and had a great career with the Broncos

Transfers:
Best QB: Tommy O'Connell was a '48 ND frosh, transferred to Illinois and led the Illni to the Big 10 title and Rose Bowl victory over Stanford. O'Connell had a long pro career and was the first starting QB for the Buffalo Bills (also played with Bears)

Best RB: Probably Dorsey Levens (already mentioned by others) GT and Super Bowl w/ Green Bay

Best WR: Here is an OLD one-Bernie Kirk was the leading receiver for ND in 1918 & 1919 and received 'inducements' to transfer to Michigan (where he was named a Walter Camp AA). Only player ever to play for both Knute Rockne and Fielding Yost

Best OL: Joe Scibelli played G at ND in the 50s and strangely transferred to little American International (in his hometown of Springfield Ma). Scibelli then spent 15 year starting at G for the LA Rams-the last 10 as team captain. All Pro

Best DL: Art Donovan-played spring football at ND in '42 and then went off to WWII. Came back to ND in '46 but was told he didn't have a scholarship. So Art transferred to BC, then the Baltimore Colts, then the NFL HOF, then Lite Beer commercials

Best LB: Arnold Ale: started as a frosh on the '88 Irish National Champs and then transferred to UCLA

Best DB:probably Larry Kuharich, son of former HC Joe, who transferred to BC when his dad left ND, got drafted in the NFL and had a nice pro career in Canadian Pro Football
