I have been reading this site as a guest everyday way too many hours daily since Manti's recruitment back in 08-09.. never posted until now, finally became a member this Fall when the Irish offered Nic. I went to the same HS as him, and graduated with most of the coaching staff back in the late 90s. I have seen him play several times, he catches everything, hits hard, and this kid will be a stud. Very tough South Side kid that comes from a good family. He will be a great member to this class. Welcome to the Irish Nic!!

I think TE has been so important the last couple years because the talent has dictated it. We've had great players at TE (I don't need to list them), and the coaches have taken advantage.

I'm not going to criticize Kelly, Martin, etc. because it's completely up to them. It just seems like we have enough depth at the position, and it's not completely necessary to even take a single TE this year.

We do look pretty good there, but with the recent transfers and slim number of potential 5th year, I think we can afford to build quality depth almost everywhere on the field while still filling our urgent needs. Hard to say how all of this will all shape up anyways. It's so early.

Seems to me that, with Koyack playing so much slot this spring, we are fast becoming a two-TE team, with the second TE replacing the Davonte Neal-type slot. This guy is a PERFECT "big slot" (a term I just invented). Or "flex TE" if you like. He kind of reminds me of Eifert in high school (I know, not fair to compare him)

My buddy has coached against him several times and this is what he just told me:

"We have basically shut him down the last 2 years in cover zero press. He's got Eifert like ability though. Like Eifert, underrated at this stage because he's an oversized WR in h.s. He's gotta get more physical and stronger, but Eifert did, Ertz did, so why not? He gets dinged up because he's never lined up as an inline blocker and recruiting analysts struggle to rank guys at positions they don't play in h.s.

Very good pickup, class kid too, who seemingly is a very hard worker. All area basketball player in Chicagoland as a soph (injured this year). Has had shoulder issues and we instructed our kids to bump him immediately and throw a forearm shiver to the injured shoulder. Aside from one acrobatic TD catch he was ineffective as a result. He's in our conference...

Better natural football player than Bunting. Bunting may be slightly more athletic but has a much longer way to go. Weishar has a much better frame right now. He's 6-5 210 and lines up wide. Probably 100+ catches this year. Bunting is taller 6-7 but probably 190. I really like Bunting too and he's from 5 mins from where I coach. I hear he's a great kid too but I've seen Weishar's work ethic, leadership and team mentality up close and personal for three years and we have a player that will succeed. He's going to need a redshirt year to hit the weight room. Because he's a high level basketball player too. He missed this entire season and i'd fully expect him to play senior year, if for some reason he doesn't he could probably get prepared to see some snaps."

fwiw, my buddy coaches at Nazareth. Not sure if Weishar's junior highlights are posted but here they are from hudl - the youtube embedded is from his soph year.

Thanks guys.. I always like Old Man Mike's posts, no trolling here. I just read the info and keep quiet from any of the drama that goes on too much! Thanks to you guys who post all the valuable info for us that just read.

I'll get some more info from Pat Dunne his coach on the recruitment/convo with the staff.

I know he is listed as about 6'5", I'd say that is pretty spot on. He has a pretty good build but could use some more muscle. Marist runs a spread, and puts up some big points. They split him out get the safety/LB mismatch often.. 3 things that stood out to me is that he catches everything, isn't scared to block for the run, also isn't afraid to lower his shoulder take on the hit for extra yards.

Also a very good basketball player that isn't playing anymore to concentrate strictly on football. He has that crossover ability with good hands.

The highlights from Hudl is really good. Gets in the air the catch, catches really well in traffic. I can definitely see the Eifert comparaison here. I like this pick up.

So we're going to miss out on possibly getting Luatua?

Congrats to Nic on his commitment.

Why would we miss out on Luatua? Luatua is a take no matter what, and is being recruited as a big skill athlete.

Not to be down on any (potential) future member of our Irish, but I don't understand taking a non-elite TE this early in the cycle in a down year for TE's when we've already got Niklas, Koyack, Welch, and Heuerman, and Smythe coming in. How much TE depth do we need?

Kelly likes using 2-3 TEs and with the athletic TEs, you give a coach more flexibility to show more formations without changing personnel. Niklas and Koyack's senior year will be Nic's frosh (redshirt most likely) year. We're passed the days of recruiting 4-5 star guys and needing them to step on the field and start on day 1.

The staff offered this guy a year ago because they see something they like and could honestly care less about what rivals thinks of him. I think the recruiting services tend to undervalue the TE/WR guys because they don't quite fit into either position at this stage. Also, although I think he'll put on good weight, he could easily keep his weight down and be a big WR.

It's just that we've had FOUR TE that all were on ND's radar commit on the same day. Never happened before.

He'll redshirt, probably wont see the field till his junior season, but that'll give him time to put ample weight onto his frame.

Awesome. Someone had said 6'3 and someone else said 6'6. haha i was felt that was fairly decent difference in two people that had interactions face to face with him

Looking at pics of Tyler (listed at 220) out of HS, Weishar looks bigger right now comparatively

So this is pretty great! I was worried after Bunting fell today and thought Weishar was gonna land with Northwestern. Very glad this worked out and am absolutely stoked about this news!

TJ said their wasn't a consensus among the staff at TE but most had Lutua has #1 overall and among traditional TEs and Weishar #1 of flex TEs. He has reiterated over the couple weeks I've been on Rivals and Wiltfong has done the same on 247 Northwestern was a major player here

ISD did a really good job with their breakdown of Nic especially capturing his versatility. They rated him only below Luatua (and probably Shultz if you read between the lines)... I really like the potential upside of this addition. One of the better features of ISD are these "in the film room" features that capture how someone projects specifically for ND.
