I think you all are being unreasonably harsh on Mahone. I didn't think he looked slow, he was tentative going through the line, but it's first ever live college action!

For all you Mahone haters he was run behind the 2nd and 3rd string line. I mean Heggie was his guard.

Again for the haters did you see the seem route Mahone ran and the YAC he got on it.

Let's just criticize every rb on the team, especially a kid getting his first college action ever.

With all that said I think Greg Bryant by the end of the year might be the #1 back.

You're right about Mahone not having any space to run, but I still don't think he grasps how to be the power back yet. He was trying to juke instead of punish upon contact.

Hopefully he can figure it out this summer. Otherwise we won't have a reliable goaline back. Maybe Bryant can be that guy? He still isn't that big yet though.

Not impressed with any of the backs today.

GAIII had a few nice runs up the middle. He looks less hesitant but he still has some work to do. I honestly thought one of the best runs of the day was Cam's safety which is pretty sad. He broke like four tackles and almost got back to the goaline.

Hopefully, it can be blamed at least partially on our excellent depth/talent on the D-line and that we were missing Watt.

Two things about today: 10% of the team was not playing; and from what someone told me the wind was wreaking havoc.

No one should take Golsons performance as a cause for concern. Literally the scrimmage takes away all of his strengths, if anyone believed that he was going to throw all over our starting defense from the pocket is silly. Also his pick wasn't his fault GA3 messed up. The fact that we did seem him throw some great passes from the pocket shows his growth from a season ago.

Sorry for the rant; just kinda got annoyed with all the posts of him looking awful.

No injuries = success

A mediocre performance on both sides = a solid O & D

We're deeper, stronger, faster and better... Temple will get annihilated.

Spring games are the red carpet of football..

I thought it was bitter cold but had a good day. I got quite a few autographs for my play like a champion poster.
The game itself was just a scrimmage. But I thought Cam McDaniel is an exciting player to watch, I'm really excited to see more playing time for this guy. The roughest part to watch were the special teams which wasn't much different from last season.
Everyday at Notre Dame is a great day.

And the punting was worse than Turk could have imagined.

I want to try out for punter. That was unreal.

Other than that, though, not much of note. That is how it should be. We're in good shape. It's just an exhibition and a fun day. Nobody should be concerned about anything that happened today, for better or worse.

I agree that Golson didn't look great but we all know he can play better than that and I'm sure he will play better than that come August. QB's do have a bad game even if it's just a scrimmage and he was going against what I consider to be the #1 or at least #2 defense in the country so that can affect things. Also keep in mind that he couldn't really do the one thing that makes him so effective which is scramble in the pocket. He had 1 play where he scrambled, got loose from the D but got (barely) touched and the play was dead. In a live game, he probably takes that play for 10+ yards. I think scrimmages like this are designed more for pocket passers and can make mobile QB's less effective because they can't do what they do best because just 1 little touch and they are considered sacked. I think I would have preferred the QB's to be live but I understand why that didn't happen. As you all saw, he did that roll out and hit his receiver on the run perfectly once again. That is his bread and butter right there. Golson will be fine and I don't think there is a QB controversy just because Malik had a good day.

And I can definitely say Cam is the #2 back right now. Mahone did not look good. Did he get any positive yardage out of the backfield? I think the starting job could be Amir's if he can stay healthy. I wasn't really impressed with GAIII but hopefully he will be better in a few months. Cam had a decent day but I do think Amir and maybe even Bryant will have a shot to get meaningful minutes. Overall, the defense was dominating just as I thought they would be. Favorite play of the day was the Irish Chocolate Special!

This board has gotten worse and worse over the years. The overreaction is getting so ridiculous. Commenting and being butt hurt over how another man dresses it the truest form of douchery.

I am also amazed how much you guys are looking into this spring game. All the spring game is for is to create game like situations and getting reps. Last year I was at the spring game and remember it being very boring and not seeing anything impressive. We all know how last years season went.

Oh and in my sig I am wearing a flat billed snapback hat backwards, so I guess that makes me a complete douche, Justin Beiber loving f@g. Sorry for disrespecting Notre Dame and having no sense of style or the ability to take anything serious because of the way I dress. I am sorry.

Peace.

Rant on but if you had listened to Kelly in the post game interview you would have heard Kelly's cause for concern.

Kelly noted that he played much smarter last season than he did Saturday. He was more HS QB Saturday than college QB. Kelly added emphatically that would be corrected.

Kelly also responded to a reporter's question about whehter there would be a change in the QBs one through four. Kelly responded that there would be no change in QB depth ranking prior to Summer Camp.

10% of the team not playing is one Offensive Starter, Watt.

The wind definitely played havoc with the running game, GAIII despite running too tall into the wind was the effective RB.
GAIII 4.9 ypc
Mahone 1.4
McDaniel 1.3

Rees was the only scholarship QB that didn't lose net yardage, he was zero. Guess his slow feet helped him counter the wind while the "quick" dual prototype guys got sacked a total of 10 times. The ball has to be thrown for the wind to wreak havoc.

Had we scrimmaged Bama today I saw nothing to indicate the score would have been different from January.

I don't think there's anything out there yet- been looking myself. I just switched away from DTV in an effort to save as much as possible with a new one on the way plus a new house not far off on the horizon, and man- I though Cablevision sucked and that was BEFORE I realized no NBC Sports :verysad: So needless to say I would also greatly appreciate it if/when someone can post a link to the game. Thanks in advance!

I can't always tell if someone is kidding or not. I was thinking that Amir may be a starter, and that Corey and James might be a contributor. I was also thinking that Danny, Nicky, and Chase may have been contributors on D. Then there is Skinny. Oh, yeah. And Stephon didn't look all the way back yet, did he?

As far as the wind, I was refering to field goal (which were made, so that was a positive thing) and punting, (because some people had a hernia over punting.)

So, like that. As I said, I wasn't sure if you were kidding or taking exception to something I said.

I am 100% serious that if my transfer application gets accepted I am trying out. I punted for my football team freshman year of high school and had some bombs, and then I went back to soccer. Simply turrible display yesterday.

Can't read too much into a spring game, but I did expect EG to look better.

As far as the hat conversation, it's the way of the world.... Kids dress like cocktards and older folks hate on it. Everyone needs to have pictures of the past, for people to laugh at in the future. In my day we grew our hair long, wore bell bottom jeans and listened to rock & roll.

Here's some funny hat stuff:

That to me is the key and I couldn't agree more with you.

The facts are that as fun as last year was, we over-achieved. Nothing yesterday showed me anything any different. We still have a long way to go to get to Bama level.

Agree that it looked sloppy out there. Saw some bright moments I thought. But whatever, it's the last practice of the spring. Couple random, devils advocate type of thoughts:

The biggest problem I had with the spring game is that "dead ball sack" was as simple as a lineman flying by and reaching out with his hand. Takes away Golson's ability to side-step DL and find his man downfield. There was a moment in that "Strong & True" thing NBC did before the game where Golson is called down in this sort of situation, and he turns to the ref and goes "he wouldn't have got me, man!" Felt like that could have been said a couple times Saturday. Ah well. Meant that we had a ton of 3rd and forevers. Not going to be very successful there.

Thought the defense got away with a couple of big penalties. Russell early on Daniels, surely, by the pylon.

Also, this play: 2013 Blue Gold Game Highlights - Notre Dame Football - YouTube

At the 1:37 mark - Is there an illegal contact penalty in college football? Because Calabrese absolutely blows up Atksinson about 10 yards downfield to knock him off his route right when Golson lets go of the ball. You see it pretty clearly on the replay. Mayock says that Atkinson "cut off his route" and "hooked it up" but I'm not sure he was a willing participant in that, haha.

I watched about 80% of the game, and here are my takeaways:

- Nix was great. Tuitt didn't seem to go very hard, but we don't need to worry about Tuitt obviously.
- 2nd string DL is better than last year.
- Jarron Jones does not play hard. Doesn't have a football player's mentality from what I can tell. Doesn't fire off of the ball at all. He will not be a factor this year.
- Jarret Grace is going to be a really good player.
- Carlo had a good game.
- I thought the secondarys played excellent. I know Atkinson #24 got flagged for interference a couple of times, but he was right on the WR for every play. If he's our 4th corner, our secondary is in good hands.
- Farley isn't a great athlete, but you can tell he reads plays very very well. Again, secondary looked great.
- RBs didn't really do much for me. Cam and G. Atkinson looked no different than last year, but IDK. It's just one game. I think Bryant will be our #1.
- QBs were pretty painful to watch. Not Golson's best game.
- Punting was the ugliest thing I've ever seen.
- WRs didn't really stand out. No Chris Brown to speak of. Proise made a TD on a play where the corner completely left him. Wish I would have seen Proise out of the slot more.
- Really wish BK would have kept Golson going. Clearly he needs all of the reps he can get.

I think our offense will be worse than last year unless Golson really improves but our defense will be better.
