Seems like a big power kind of guy. The Staff obviously likes him and I don't see them trolling for projects at this stage of the cycle. The young man has to be a player to get an offer from ND.

Congrats on the offer and let's make it a Verbal please!

That update earlier kind of seemed like this was a contingent offer based on his ability to gain weight, am I reading that wrong?

My belief is that he received an offer, and him being recruited and placed as a DE is contingent on gaining weight. I think they want him in the program no matter what as a jumbo athlete prospect with flexibility to play multiple positions, a la Troy Niklas.

That's according to what he told II during his interview. He moves well for a 6'8 guy and imagine him coming off the edge at 275-285 lbs. And from the two articles that I've read I agree with Ironman on the stance the staff has on Nelson. Kelly specifically said to him "for now" when talking about playing DE. If he can't gain that weight then he plays another position. IMO, this will be a 5 year guy so there is time to see what the best fit is.

And that position might be power forward.

Its funny you say that because when I first heard about this kid and saw pictures, this is prior to me watching his film, I thought to myself this is a basketball players trying to play football. However after watching his tape he isn't afraid of contact and definitely looks the part of a quality D1 prospect.

How is being 6'8 and lanky freakishly built for a basketball player? That is a run of the mill power forward.

taking about Lebron i believe.

i think Lebron could probably set a good edge and def get a quick jump off the ball/rush the edge.

Ahh gotcha. Yeah Lebron could either be a stud TE or OLB. Basketball is way safer and more lucrative though. Good choice Mr. James.

if he's a legit 245, i don't think it's out of the question that he could even grow to an offensive tackle down the road with training.

remember how much schwenke packed on his freshman year

I feel like there is a lot more talent at the DE postion available.

With his upside & versatility, and legit interest in ND? Would be great if you were right, but I just don't see it. Can you name who?

I would say there is still plenty of time left to find one.

They obviously just found one they liked...

to piggyback this....what is it that is turning people off??? what i saw in his highlights were him being explosive off the ball, closing speed and non stop motor...

I am under the impression that if Matt were to commit tomorrow we aren't going to shut down our recruiting of those big name DE's that you speak of. This staff isn't stupid. They see Matt as a project and if there is somebody that can come in and play right away they'll go after them. Keep in mind Matt can play many different positions. The staff already told Trumbetti he might get a look at OLB so Hayes is the only DE guy we have right now. I feel very confident saying we'll continue to recruit the heck out of Williams, Carter, McDowell etc.

Go to his Hudl page and click on the October 12 game against Cedar Falls...2nd play (or :26 of his full season highlights)...that's Nelson tossing the #5 OT (247 comp) in the country to the side, then shedding the block of the 2nd guy in the double team and making the tackle in the backfield. I know it's just one play but you have to like his size, versatility and athleticism (multiple D1 basketball scholarships).

Who are these big name DE's that everyone is talking about? McDowell is the only name that I can think of that fits, and he is going to Michigan barring an Alabama power swipe.

Carter, Williams, etc are all CAT prospects, and we are going to take one NG regardless. But as for DE, who else is out there that can match Matt in upside or versatility, which the staff covets?

He will also be visiting Stanford June 18-22, Samspon and TJ both think that Stanford has the edge at this point but we have a shot. Tj mentions that ND's Pre-med program, his intended major, takes a backseat to no one including Stanford. That may be our trump card.

So, when the Power-Hendrix package becomes a real and useful part of our offense and Hendrix and his Pre-med major are talked about every week it should be exciting for Mr. Nelson and help sway things in our favor.

I really like this kid

Stanford is the perceived favorite and he does have a four day
visit there planned but he favors the ND staff per 247

Instead of STL's rep bar saying that he "should be giving advice to Kelly," it should say something like "should take over for Loy."
