200k lbs of anhydrous ammonia were stored at the plant this morning, and the second tank is still intact and chalk full of it. I guess they are evacuating the town but fire crew are still on scene.

Hold those you love a little tighter tonight and every night. These past few days just show up how fragile life can be. I'm at a loss for what has happened over the past few days. Prayers...

A new found respect for first responders this week. That's for damn sure.

Wow the explosion registered on the Richter scale like an earthquake.

Edit: Never mind me, I'm just mimicking Clashmore.

Speechless. God help us all. Really tough time. Anhydrous Ammonia is some of the nastiest stuff around, a breath and you are done. Prayers for Waco, Boston, and the great people of this nation. Especially the brave responders who rush in to help any soul they can.

I'm afraid the death toll is going to be very high. I hope to God I'm wrong. Praying for everyone affected.

There was some kind of explosion in Oklahoma City tonight too.

Didn't find any reports on this.

Did find:

Truck causes brief evacuation, scare in Oklahoma City - CNN.com

(CNN) -- A suspicious U-Haul truck parked near City Hall triggered a brief bomb scare Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
Officials evacuated City Hall and another nearby building as a bomb squad searched the unattended vehicle, which was reported stolen, CNN affiliate KOCO reported.
Shortly afterward, police said the truck was empty and that there was no threat.

Lord in Heaven,

Bless those that have been affected in Waco and Boston. I understand bad things happen to good people. Give strength to those that are beginning to lose faith. Good will triumph in the end. I trust Your plan.

Amen.

Look up the Texas City ship explosion of 1947.

2,300 TONS of ammonium nitrate on a ship blew up killing about 600 people including all but one of the local fire department. There's a documentary on the incident that plays on the history channel, discovery, and similar stations.

This is horrible, and I feel for all the victims of this. Does anyone else find it very disturbing that these are the chemicals used to grow most of our food?

I find it very disturbing and not entirely happenstance either.

And there are still about 30-40 people missing...

I know people in the Waco area...Terrible stuff.

I know Boston is getting all the coverage right now (not downplaying it)...but this is a far bigger tragedy as far as lives lost and injuries.

It looks like an atomic bomb went off out there.

One of the fields I work in is in occupational safety. I can tell you there are reasons why we have federally mandated safety standards. Its because things like this have happened a lot in the past. Some companies take safety very serious and unfortunately a lot more of those do not. OSHA does not have the resources to inspect every company every year so most companies take the risks, because even under these circumstances, they can still come out on top based on the insurance policies.

I have worked for a sugar plant that exploded due to combustible dust. Just dust.... enough dust that a static charge ignited the dust, which in turn ignited pressurized vessels and blew half that building away. There are regulations on the books to prevent this but that company did not adhere to them. There are so many things that can go wrong in places like this.

This is terrible.

This was an accident. Not saying it shouldn't get more coverage but anytime you have 2 piece of $hit humans that hurt people on purpose that will be the bigger story when they did this.

I can't imagine going back to the firehouse with out my brothers. Makes me sick to my stomach.

With the complete destruction of the plant it's going to be very difficult to figure out exactly what happened. Aside from the obvious tragedy of lost lives, it's also tragic that other industrial plants may not be able to learn from this plant's mistakes. Operating experience is huge in these industries. Completely devastating.

Oh, of course. I know why...I'm just pointing out that this in terms of body count and damage this is far worse.

Not downplaying the Boston situation at all..Terrible when other people do things like that to others.
