They'll sell about 1000 of these, people with cash who want the new toy. Costs would be prohibitive for most courses.

They don't look particularly easy to get in and out of for older players.

It is cool though.

1000 of what????

Anybody have any hole in ones? Last summer, I holed one on a par 5 from 170 or so out for eagle. In all honesty, it was the luckiest shot ever. It was a completely blind shot. The green is out the bottom of a cliff, so I was actually using a 9 iron from that far away. I've also stuck em with in a couple of inches before on par 3's, and even hit the flag once, but yet to get a hole in one.

Never got a hole in one, but I was pretty darn close once on a par four, incredibly. I played a round in the Philippines when I was visiting my wife's family a few years ago. It was a pretty severe dog leg left and I was attempting to just hit a normal little drive down the middle of the fairway. Instead, I ended up yanking it far to the left and was only hoping that I didn't end up nailing a resident of the shanties that were behind the out of bounds fence to the left. A moment later our caddies starting jumping up and down excitedly, so naturally I thought that I had probably severely injured somebody. What had actually happened was my ball somehow made it through the trees, over the shantytown, and had ended up around a foot or so from the hole. I ended up sinking the most nerve-wracking putt I've ever attempted for the eagle.

I'm never sure whether that should be categorized as one of the worse shots I've ever hit or one of the best. Either way, I'll probably end up remembering that one for a long time.

Personally I'm in between the Callaway RAZR FIT XTREME DRIVER and the TaylorMade R1

Love my old Callaway Fusion driver, but it is getting a little ragged so I'm probably going to be in the market for a new driver this year. Anybody have recommendations? Don't really care much for the oversized heads, which makes it slim pickins.

That's going to limit you to the Tour Player (TP) heads that are typically 440cc. The problem with them is they tend to be open faced. I haven't looked close but the new adjustablity may allow you to square them up.

Biggest problem is they usually are $60-$100 more.

TheChosen1 - A golf pro buddy of mine says the Callaway Razr Fit Extreme is the hottest faced driver out there.

That is awesome. There is a very short dog leg left par 4 at one of the local courses by me that I always go for the green on. I've only done it twice, and ironically enough 3 putt each time for par because they end up being ridiculous putts.

What is your(anyone here) opinion on hybrids. I am not sure if I wanna get a new set of irons this season, or pick up one or two hybrids. Is it the kind of club that is easy to get a hang of or would I need some time at the range, or should I just stick to irons.

Hybrids are great depending a person's need/use of them.
I personally use a Taylormade R-11 3-iron hybrid because I get a better ball flight, and even though I hit my 3 really well, I personally get an extra 25 yards out of it. They are really nice for hitting out of long grass, because just like a fairway wood, it is a lot easier to slide through long grass than an iron.

I am so excited, I am picking up my new Callaway X-Forged irons this week! I'm finally able to go the extra mile and I'm going down to Texas to have them professionally fitted.Excited!

Maybe this should be in a music thread, but it seemed appropriate here...

As of about 4 years ago, I started playing through the winter. I got tired of starting off shooting low 90s-100s in the beginning of the season and then by the end I would occassionally break 90. September would come and I would put the clubs away until April/May and then go back to where I started the year before, never really improving.

I played about 10 times from this past November through March. Played 2 times this past weekend and playing at least this Friday/Saturday and maybe Sunday. Winter time I try to make it to the range at least 1-2 times every 2 weeks. In season, I hit balls least 3 times a week and sometimes 2 times in 1 day--lunch and then after work. It gets expensive though so rather than buying buckets I'll go the local golf course and just chip and putt. I've gone from 21 down to as low as a 7.8 last summer--I got hot during a stretch and broke 80 a few times so I feel my handicap was a little inflated (deflated? haha). I ended the season at as a 9.4---Northeast stops tracking handicaps out of season after Oct 31 through I beleive April 30th.

I'm using Taylor Made RAC OS irons now. Theyre about 6-7 years old and considered game improvememnt clubs--larger sweet spot to decrease the effect of a mis-hit. I have my eye on these Mizuno MP-59s which I hit at the simulator while the guy was popping Project X shafts in and out. Comparing my Tyalor Made 6 Iron to the Mizuno 6 Iron, it was about 20-25 yards longer, trajectory mostly remained the same and not as much draw/hook, depending on which PX shaft was used. I know those simulators bump yardage--but thats why I was comparing my current 6I to the Mizuno so that it was an even comparisson. Mizuno is hosting a free fitting at this store close to my place and I am scheduled for April 17th. Im wondering if they will recommend the MP-59s---the Mizuno site recommends clubs based on certain handicaps. I have about $1700 saved.

It's crazy what a different shaft can do to distance, spin rate, and trajectory. Pretty pumped.

When you get fitted, see if they will let you take the 6-iron to the course and play it before you buy. I have a buddy that spent $1500 on fitted clubs and can't hit them for crap on the course. Sometimes the simulator and the course just aren't the same.

I don't agree with this. The problem with fittings are that they take a small percentage of actual ball strikes and try to fit according to those shots. I'd be willing to bet if he was professionally fitted and hit 200 balls, those numbers would be greatly different than what he had them fitted for. I learned this the hard way. I went into my local Dick's store, hit about 15 balls to be fitted and ended up with an inch longer shaft and a 2 degree upright. I struggled with this so I went back to another professional fitter and found that only my 9-iron fit into that fitting. Every single one of my clubs each had a different fitting and I am striking my irons better than I ever have.

No if they could just my driver the same I could maybe get down to a scratch... #dreamin

That's true, I didnt look at it like that. I am hoping I hit more than 15 balls for the guy to get a feel. I'm not going to a Dick's or Golf Galaxy Store. Its a non-chain store known for fitting golfers into clubs. What I think I am going to do is let the MIzuno rep fit me and then go back to the same store and let someone on their staff take his findings and then work off that. The Mizuno fitting is only 30 mins. I was talking to someone who told me if you go to the store during the week, they will work with you for as long as you need....

Who knows. I am apprehensive that I get the irons and I play like trash while being excited at the same time to get a new set. I've been excited since November so I am definitely being patient with my decision.

Relatively new to the sport. I golf in the high 40's/low 50's if I play an honest round (this is 9 holes). I hit most clubs decent, but I don't even carry a driver with me anymore; instead I wack a wood from the t-box. For whatever reason, I cannot hit accurately with a 'fat headed' driver - which is all they make these days. Any suggestions? Most of my drives with the fat-headed driver's are slices. I hit the R7 3 wood very well off of the t-box.

Slicing, for amateurs, is mostly about the swing path and the club face at impact. The most typical kind of slice is due to a backswing that is too inside, usually resulting in a big compensating move to the outside on the downswing. This is the standard over the top move that plagued me for years.

Changing swing plane is difficult to do and I'm not qualified enough to explain it. For me, I worked on grip (to help get face square) and focusing on swinging the club out to the right. It seems counterproductive, but when I would close my stance (instead of opening it more) and try to feel like I was swinging out to "right field," I started to hit more of a draw. With my grip, I went to more of a strong grip and moved my right hand back behind the club more, instead of folding it over the top. It will feel weird, but getting better at golf and changing your swing requires you to feel weird.

I really want to get on the course this weekend. Looks to be great weather and I need it. Like others I struggle a few rounds to shake the winter rust and shoot in the 90s. I really want to get in the mid to low 80s consistently this year.

I use Nike SQ Machspeed irons (AW-4), and TaylorMade woods. Last year I really was able to hit my irons solid, the second year I had them, which was thanks to getting adjusted to both new clubs and an overhaul of my swing.

I can really hit the ball high and far with a nice draw. Biggest problem right now for me is the mental part, especially on par 3s.

Couldn't agree more. Last summer in the middle of July I got so pissed on the golf course that it ruined by entire day. It ruined the round for everyone else as well. I finally realized that the more upset I got, and the more I lived and died by every shot, the worse I would play. After that day I really have just tried to let it go on the golf course. Next round I focused on going out, having a good time, and what do you know, I shot 78.

Anyone know of any good books on this? Bunch of people have told me about great books on the mental aspects of golf, but I always forget their name.

There is always that one shot/hole that can ruin a round. Too many times. Another mental block for me is I think i get over anxious at times after a great shot that I hit the next shot fat/thin due to putting too much pressure on myself to hit another great shot. Hard to relax sometimes.

I too would be interested in a book on the mental part.

I read a book years ago called Zen Golf that dealt with the mental part of the game.
