BobbyD:

I rescind my offer to trade for my tea rose. I was just out doing a little yard work. To my surprise (as I was approaching it with lopping shears and malice in my heart) I noticed a slew of buds among all the lovely leaves!

I'll give it a sixth chance.

Will do. One might say that I granted it a 25th year of eligibility. I half expect the buds to wither and drop before they bloom.

Clearly I can be patient when it comes to plants that refuse to die in spite of my urine-poor care. They have my utmost respect.

If a plant I like (or pay for) can thrive in spite of my gray thumb, it deserves to live.

Where did you get this? I must have one....

In garden news, one of the baby bunnies got stuck in the garden and ate damn near all of my plants before the wife came home and let the lil' guy out. A cantaloupe, two tomato plants, an onion and two pepper plants are that made it.

So I did some replanting today and added some marigolds and rock border to keep the rabbits out. We'll see how it goes. Pics to come when it actually looks like a real garden.

Thanks for the tips on the roses. I tried just about all of them and now they're looking good.

Nobody has posted a pic of their melons yet?

This year we are growing tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, jalapenos, basil and rosemary. Everything is starting out real well.

No garlic (without it life will cease to exist)? No horseradish (I know it's a perennial, but that makes it easier)? No brussels sprouts (roast 'em, saute 'em)? No Burbank spuds (gotta be a CA booster/homie)?

Leaf out ... expand your palate and your palette!

We just have a container garden. I don't have the time to maintain a full fledged real one. I will be planting some zucchini and pumpkins in a few months.

What kind of container(s) do you use? In the past I've done herbs and tomatoes in containers, but this year I've been planning on putting together a raised bed garden, still trying to decide whether I should build one or get a few pre-fabricated ones though. My wife and I have already sprouted lettuce, jalapeno, squash, tomatoes, beans, and a variety of herbs inside and we're looking to transplant them outside within the next few weeks. If you (or anybody) have any advice as far as good raised beds or containers I can use it'd be much appreciated.

I love growing this stuff but I'm a gardening hack.

We just use generic black plastic type containers of varying sizes depending on the size of the eventual plant. This year is the first time we've tried cucumbers in a container. I'm going to let them grow up a tomatoes cage and pick them at about 6 or 7 inches. Later this season we are going to plant zucchini and pumpkins the same way. I'm using a smaller pumpkin variety called sugar babies and I will selectively harvest some younger pumpkins to help others get a little larger.

The best advice I can give for container gardening is high quality soil and feeding. The plants suck the nutrients out of limited soil quickly I believe. I use miracle grow.

I haven't tried bonsai stuff, but my wife and I recently started growing plumeria. Takes a long time to get it going but we are hopefully for some flowers next year or the year after that.

I also have a container garden. Good ol' Rubbermaid totes work great. The feeding is the key. This year my tomatoes got attacked by those nasty green horned worms, but I was able to get those under control. I also have radishes, beets, squash, cucumbers, and several varities of peppers.

Does anyone know why my tomatoes are not turning red? The cherry tomatoes are coming fast and furious but the regular tomatoes are big and not turning red (ripening).

They will, just be patient, grasshopper. I planted my tomato plant in late May and just harvested the first tomato off of it this past weekend. I've got about 25 more that are green and just waiting...

They might take a bit longer if it hasn't been too warm or too sunny. I have noticed my 'maters usually take a while to ripen for the first batch, but subsequent ones go ripe a lot faster. Also, be sure to pinch off the new growth on the stems when you have a "Y" in the stem. A new stem will usually come up in the middle of the established "Y" stem. If you pinch that off, you won't have many stems and your plant will save lots of energy for fruit production. I can't remember what this is called, but there is a term for it.
