Are we seriously getting upset about potentially losing a LAX commit?
Really depends on how you want consider the situation. Some of us, frankly, care about lacrosse. There are a couple different ways to look at this from a football standpoint:
1. If Danny Spond just up and quit the team or got hurt or otherwise was not playing any more, would you care? Because this kid was/is potentially a free Danny Spond clone with better physical attributes/upside.
2. For a more apt comparison, did you care when Mattingly and ND went different directions? Probably not, because it was a mutual decision and not a position of dire need with Randolph on board in addition to Jaylon. Would you have cared if Mattingly was going to come as a walk-on/greyshirt? I think most would've been pretty bummed then.
3. Do you care if Stanford gets him? I do, and I think most would. Do you care if Ohio State gets him? I do, but many probably won't because there is no lacrosse angle for them. Do you care if Michigan gets him? This I'm fuzzy on because we stop playing Michigan in football, they suck at lacrosse and one elite top 30 player isn't going to fix them, but I also vehemently dislike Michigan so I kinda care.
Even if he is a 4 star OLB, there many other recruits that are higher on our list at that position.
Actually, outside of Dillon Bates who is an elite prospect we aren't recruiting anyone at that position. This is the main issue. Hubbard can play TE/DOLB and neither are positions we're really actively recruiting for except for elite prospects at TE. In another year, he would likely receive an offer as a "big skill" player but this year we are quite tight on numbers.
