Right, as long as our defense remains basically passive, our success depends on the "back seven" being able to cover their assigned areas. A lot of typical freshman ILBs, if they've been linebackers forever, have spent their entire football-playing lives at the line of scrimmage banging helmets. We want guys who have the size and strength (or can develop the strength) to do that, but who also have a lot of experience in coverage and have thereby developed good coverage instincts and good closing speed. A large-ish safety who plays physical (like Dan Fox, high school safety) is a great bet. Ogletree is a great example. For another, this combination of traits is what I LOVED about Michael Hutchings ... he played ILB, OLB and safety in his tape. In my view, great ILB prospect for us.

Yeah. I want safeties (that add size) that can play linebacker because they're more athletic...I agree there.

However, I want better coverage guys at safety and corner. We don't need anymore "bangers" at safety unless they're as atheletic as Sean Taylor was.

Well since he is white and plays football, it wouldn't be right that we don't mention Wes Welker as a comparison.

Also Ben Affleck. You white ... you Ben Affleck.

Does this affect special teams tho?

I don't think so. By all accounts, Chris was on the fourth team (does such a thing exist?), usually backups and third stringers play special teams. He probably wouldn't have even dressed this year.

Fair enough. Hopefully he won't be missed.

Is this the proper thread for this discussion or should we be discussing in the Transfer Time thread? Kuehnja, any thoughts? Too soon?

Not happy with him going to a team we play this year and a team we only beat by 3 points last year.

Otherwise, good luck to him. Was buried in our depth so I understand the move and probably better for us to have another scholarship.

Great kid. Wish him well. Good move for him. Still putting the 14 class at 30 spots when it's all said and done.

Good for all sides involved to be honest

Yeah, except he has been in meetings for all of camp and can give that info to BYU. Talk about one hell of a scouting report....

Wish he had left earlier. Good kid, never going to contribute with the other safeties on the depth chart. And now we're down a warm body for scout team, special teams, etc.

Who would Kelly have taken with an extra scholarship for '13?

It does suck that he can talk to BYU about signals and whatnot now.

Whatevs, I say. We don't play BYU again after this year and he wont play this year. He can talk to their coaches about our signals, but if we cant adapt for that and beat them anyway, then we have bigger problems.
