I don't mind NASCAR, it's kind of like golf for me. I will only watch it if it is a big race. And it's a sign that summer is on the way!

"Ladies and Gentlemen, that is a new track record. As it stands now, Jean Girard is sitting on the pole, which is a statement of fact, and is in no way a comment on the driver's sexual orientation."

Great thread title. I was at qualifying yesterday, and she does have a crazy fast car...we will see how she does when there are other cars on the track. She is fast but can she stay out of a wreck?

Exactly. Qualifying in NASCAR particular at a track like Daytona were you just push the pedal to the floor 100% of the time is all car. The equipment at Stewart Haas who Danica races for is top of the line.

Unfortunately when they drop the green flag to does not mean a thing.

Awesome! It would be great to see her win. I was at her first Indy 500 where she took the lead with 4 laps to go, got wrecked on the final lap and eventually took tenth I think(?), but to see and hear 250k fans cheer for someone at a live event was amazing.

I used to be a big NASCAR fan but now I really lose track during football season. Still follow the Daytona 500 and all the preliminary races leading up to it.

For what it is worth:

I got Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, and Matt Kenseth as my early Daytona 500 favorites. Will know after the qualifying races on Thursday.

I'll watch...I'll even root for her. Maybe the pole position and fast car will help her to stay out of trouble. I think it's good for the sport if she is for real. All the hype with no results gets a little old.

Unfortunately Daytona is a restrictor plate track meaning it is all about drafting and the cars run in big packs.

Having the pole means very little because it is invetable that drivers will shuffle to the front and back throughout the day. It is not like if you have the pole you can just take off and leave everyone in the dust.

Thanks Chicago...I think that I just learned something. I'm assuming that having a "fast car" is still helpful but doesn't carry the day. They've much fuss over her winning the post that I thought that it mattered. I look forward to watching the race. I've been a "closet" Gordon fan for years and attended the race at Watkins Glen five times. Didn't want to deal with the abuse so I kept my preference to myself....Fans are passionate.

Vegas had her at 125-1 to win before anyone showed up at Daytona. They now have her at 15-1. Granted, I think she's an extreme longshot to win the race, but damn do I wish now I would have put something on her at 125-1.

Say what you want about her or NASCAR, but this is great for the sport (if you even consider it a sport). NASCAR was really rising in terms of popularity in the late 90s/early 2000s before Earnhardt died, but the sport seemed to die with him. Having a female do well can only help NASCAR; it needs all the help it can get. Good for her.

Also, love the thread title. Didn't even catch the reference until woolybug pointed it out. I need to wake up.

If the in charges to be at NASCAR want it good again and have people watch, they need to let the guys and gal race. Rubbin' is racin'. Its too apologetic now-a-days. These guys act tough but as soon as they look at each other cross-eyed they get put on probation. And all these one mile and mile and a half tracks have killed NASCAR. Need more tracks like Bristol.

I can't speak for its financial shape, but their ticket revenue has been in a steep decline for years and TV ratings are down. Every time you flip it to a race you'll see plenty of empty seats.

Agreed. My hometown is only about two hours from Bristol and seeing the Bristol spring and fall races was one of my favorite things to do as a kid. I haven't been in about seven or eight years though. Bristol isn't even what it used to be, after they added the progressive banking (like five years ago). They finally repaved the track last summer to get it more like "old Bristol" and while the changes are definitely an upgrade from what they were in recent years, it still isn't the same.

Bristol used to be the toughest ticket to get in NASCAR. Drivers practically had to bump drivers out of the way to get by them. Hopefully it'll get back to that someday.

Yea they had a ton empty seats for the shootout or whatever they call it now last Saturday night. I do think it will be a full house for the Daytona 500 on Sunday but Daytona always sold out even for the preliminary events but it looked half empty Sunday.

I used to be a year round NASCAR fan. Nowadays I still a strong interest early on but seem to lose interest late in the year partially because of football.

.

The first track I went to was Michigan International Speedway in the infield on raceday. At the time was just getting into NASCAR. The second race was THE BRISTOL NIGHT RACE. I will never forget when we got there and went in for practice. CHILLS, absolute chills. Great weekend. We actuallly ended up crashing an auction in a luxury suite after the truck race. I had to go pee so bad from beer intake, but got stopped by a "special" guest. It was Jefff Gordon, I got to shake his hand and then proceeded to the restroom. I will tell everyone, even if you aren't a NASCAR fan, go to Bristol just once and you will be. OH yeah, visit the Jack Daniels booth area, you won't be dissapointed.
