Hey fellas. Have not been around much lately. Gearing up for my hike coming up and rehabbing a knee injury.......almost 100% healthy again.

Anyway I'm leaving March 26 and going to be in Fort Myers, Sanibel and Captiva Island area for 5 days then I'm headed to Georgia to start my way to Maine. I most likely will not be posting anything here but if you are interested in seeing my video or pictures or reading my journal entries you can do so by clicking on the direct link I will be providing.

Also if any of you live near or along the trail let me know and maybe we can meet up along the way.

Hope to see some of you along the way or at least keep in touch!

I will hold up and "IRISHENVY" sign when I reach the finish.

Talk to you soon.

I used to live in Ft. Myers and loved it. Sanibel and Captiva are great if you like to go shelling. If you make it to the end of Captiva by South Seas resort, there's a little beach store called Beach Stuff, my friend Jim manages it, stop in and tell him the E-Train sent you(serious) and he'll hook you up.

Also hit up The Bubble Room for dessert.

I heard you'll know what you need and don't need after the 30 day wilderness (or is that from Maine to GE?)

At the start of every morning do this when you can...

1. Find a curb, or a good rock that would be like a stair on a stair case.
2. Turn so you're facing down the curb or rock. Scoot forward until just your heels are on the stair, with the rest of your foot hanging off (find a tree, or wall for balance)
3. With your legs straight, point your toes downward as far as you can, then lift them up as far as you can. Repeat.
4. Do as many as you can in 30 seconds. Do them rapidly, but with full extension and flexion.
5. After 30 seconds, bend your knees at a 45-degree angle (about half way). Without pausing to rest, do another 30 seconds of flexing in that position. That's one complete set. If it burns like hell, then you're doing it correctly.
6. Rest for a minute or two, then do another set—30 seconds with the legs straight, immediately followed by 30 seconds with the knees bent. Rest for a another minute, and repeat the two-part set.

Will help hold off the shin splints. Trust me, the shin splints will get you far faster than any stamina or strength issues will, and the sucky thing about them is that they WILL end your trip soon once you get them. (Source: Aunt and two friends who walked the trail.)

My favorites on Sanibel / Captiva
Keylime Bistro
Sunshine Seafood Cafe
RC Otters (I think that's the name)
Holy Smoke BBQ

I've been going to Ft M's, and Sanibel/Captiva since I was kid (42), and it's definitely one the best places to shell I've ever seen. Go to the split between Sanibel and Captiva early in the AM. You can dig yourself past wast deep in shells.

I saw a few folks say the Bubble Room. IMHO, over priced tourist trap. Visually stimulating, and the folks are real nice, but for food I'm going to the above places. The red velvet cake is good though.

On Ft M's, if you like dives with cheap cold beer, try the Shamrock Irish Pub. It's on the strip. IT IS A DIVE, but fun. Started hanging out there in my 20s. It was nicer back then. It's changed ownership but still a fun, laid back, "different" experience. If you like the sea air, juke box booming, playing the ring game (swinging a ring and trying to land it on the hook), matching witts with the sarcastic owner that's been tipping them back since 10am, and chatting with the locals, this is the bar for you. Oh, and ND fans go there to watch the game too :).

I'm in ATL. Actually Tucker, 1/2 mile from 285. If you have time for a beer or whiskey, drop me a PM. If you need any last minute gear, REI is 5 miles away.

Are you going to Argentina too? We all from SC know that part of the Appalachian Trail. Be careful its been known to ruin a marriage or two and a governorship.

Seriously good luck!!!!! Enjoy. Its one my favorite places on Earth.

Be safe, good luck and don't slip on any of the tears of scUM fans who still cry at the thought of anything to do with Appalacia!

Thank you everyone for the kind words and support.....and thanks to you who signed my guestbook.

Also, It would be sweet if I could wear and IRISHENVY tshirt along the way but I don't think they come in synthetic wiking material. I will be sporting a ND fitted hat though to protect my bald head from the sun.
