Thanks for the Moss story. After reading, it came back to me. For a moment I thought it was academic related and could be used as another example.

Moving on, I'm still holding out faith that this kid somehow makes it to ND.

While the academic standards limit us from many great players, they also make us very attractive to other great players (i.e. the ones who would fit in anyway).

This year is the exception, don't make it the rule. Alabama (according to rivals), had the #1, 1, 1, and 5 class in the last 4 years.

One solid year doesn't put you at a championship level. Ideally, you need a string of them.

But you've got to start somewhere.

Yes but the if we continue to go to the BCS almost every year we are going to bring in top 5 classes year in and year out. Hell we got top 10 classes when we were 6-6. ND is easy to sell when they are winning.

got in a fight after signing with ND. was let go by Holtz. went to Florida State where he failed a drug test and then finally ended up at Marshall.

He was NEVER admitted academically by ND Admissions.

In '95 Holtz tried to finesse two academically deficient recruits past Admissions. Admissions put their foot and stood their ground. All students at ND have to be cleared by Admissions. These two weren't.

Holtz and Rooney, ND Admissions, battled frequently during the late 80's up until Holtz's departure. Cerrato and Holtz tried pushing several deficient recruits past Admissions by stalling on transcripts. The friction contributed to Cerrato's departure. The issue over the two in '95 contributed to Holtz's departure.

There was a fight in HS, Holtz did call Bowden to help get Moss in there, he did have a pot violation there, and ended up at Marshall. But he never passed ND Admissions.

well yeah, but it also wasn't academic issues.

Oh yes it was academic.

He was NEVER approved by ND Admissions academically. I wrote an article on the situation back at the time for the Irish Recruiting Journal. I've posted about it several times here on IE over the past 7 years. He had character issues but nonetheless he didn't meet ND academic requirements.

So far as I can tell, from reading BGIFs thoughts, there is still a chance here....

All the kids who don't get done, what they need to get done academically to attend ND, say stuff like that after the fact.

Talks about his recruitment and why he chose Miami over ND. "I just thought Miami had my best interests, were serious about me succeeding in academics" Wish the kid nothing but success but when I read this I just shake my head.

He's not being honest. The real answer is "I couldn't qualify for ND and didn't have an actionable offer from Alabama so Miami was the only one of my top 3 I could go to." I really dislike when kids do this... either put hats on their table that they don't have offers from or BS about academics in interviews... it all comes down to ego and wanting to make yourself look the best. Just for once I want to hear a recruit say "I'm going to Alabama to win championships and I don't care at all about school." I thought the Ohio State backup QB the other day was quite refreshing.

Still nothing will ever approach Kevin Hart though. That was just insane.

It depends. That kid down in Georgia that chose Oregon had every right, IMO, to use an ND hat if he wanted to.

Obviously if the kid does somethign to disqualify himself, he shouldn't pretend otherwise. But schools string the kids along and telling them they want them. I can understand why they think they have a right to put the hat on the table. If the school doesn't want him to use the hat, it should be clear and say: "We are not recruiting you. We are using you as a back-up plan. Your non-actionable offer is basically not an offer."

I feel like the kid ussually gives a somewhat honest answer about why he chose the school he did, but omitts a lot about why he didn't chose the other school.

Image preservation.. Whether its self, public or both... It's funny that he actually says Miami is the only one serious about his academic success lol. It goes both ways AQM, I'm sure you were aware of the necessary qualifications for ND.

Either way, he will be fun to watch.

Which kid are your referring to? I was speaking more in generalities than to any specific instance. I think the most common is you see kids all the time that will throw a USC hat on the table and there is a 0% chance USC would take their commitment if they wanted in.

That's a good point... the entire process from both sides is pretty disingenuous. So you really can't fault a kid for saying things that might have white lies or omissions in them.

from the Miami Herald

The discouraging news: Four key pieces to this class aren’t here because they have not qualified academically: highly-regarded tight end/receiver/basketball player Derrick Griffin and three defensive players needed to bolster a shaky pass rush: Defensive end Alquadin Muhammad, end/tackle Ufomba Kamalu and end/linebackerDevante Bond.
A UM official said Tuesday that though it’s still possible Griffin might qualify, it’s not looking promising and he still has a lot of ground to make up academically. Muhammad and Kamalu also are in jeopardy --- their former coaches declined to discuss their predicament --- and an academic official at Bond’s school said on the record that it’s very much unclear if he will make it to UM this year.

how can you not qualify after attending bosco? boggles the mind!

There is someone at the bottom of every graduating class.

Btw, did he graduate?

Did he have the necessary core courses the NCAA requires?

Did he ever take the ACT or SAT test?

Was his score high enough in conjunction with his Core GPA on the sliding scale to qualify?

He doesn't have to meet most if not all of the NCAA requirements to graduate from a NJ H.S.
