UCLA's momentum might turn out to be a double-edge sword here for us.
It's "funny" how just one elite player can turn a concern into a strength. That's what EV can {will?} do.
If Vanderdoes ultimately signs, and is as good as he seems, next year we have Tuitt, Nix, and Day as the best defensive line in the nation, and with Eddie and Isaac right behind, and Kona and Tony to back up Lou. Hounshell, Jones, and Matuska give us also the deepest DLine in the nation. This is even if we leave Romeo at CAT.
In 2014, if Sheldon moves to DT, then Eddie and Isaac could start. Jones, Springmann, Matuska, and even Hounshell would still be there for quality depth, plus newcomers like Hayes and the other DLine studs we're looking at. Again Romeo's role is either/or. Whether Okwara moves to DE may depend upon just how good Rochell and Vanderdoes really are.

Anyone else regret telling Tommy Schutt no?
Anyone else regret telling Tommy Schutt no?
I don't want to totally sidetrack the thread, but maybe someone can PM me. What was the controversy all about with him last week. I saw the founder and CEO of 247 had to start a thread to apologize, and JC had his own thread to explain how he wasn't a hater or whatever. But nobody ever really mentioned what happened to start all of that. I guess it had something to do with a radio show? It must have been bad for Shannon to get involved.
On Bill Kings show today, not only did he say as fact that Manti was in on it, but also said ND is covering it up, just like they have covered up other things in the past. The vitriol in his voice made it obvious his dislike of ND. At one point a caller asked if this will make the school look bad, King starts answering and Shurburt barks out "they don't care". I have seen where people have posted he hates ND but never saw proof of it, well today I see it. Went so far as to call Manti crazy.
You also know that Fla/Mich told him no as well, and magically he ends up playing for Urban? Think about it.
I know he was one of the ones that was making Manti/ND jokes on Twitter when the story broke. Don't know if it had to do with that or not but possibly. It was really pathetic in that thread though how he tried to circle everything in his life back to some connection to ND.
EDIT, found the start of it all:
Anyways, back to Eddie.
Can you explain this? I've read the same response by you to others who have had the same concerns regarding Schutt. I'm not an expert, but all the film I saw on Tommy suggested him to be an elite DL.
I agree with LAX about both (although Bolden is more hindsight). Saying we passed because he's not tall enough seems odd given how the staff has been after "shorter" prospects for the LB positions. Perhaps they felt the cupboards to be full at ILB at that time and projected to restock it with this cycle...I'm not sure. Obviously with Alex decommitting, we definitely could use another solid ILB right now. Bolden could've been that guy.
Back to EV...
players to different things at the textbook wrong time. There was so much top tier talent in the '12 class it's crazy... if you throw in Darby, Shephard, Greenberry to go with the guys we did eventually sign it looks a lot like USC's dream class of a month ago. Would've had 10 players with a 95 rating or above. If Vanderdoes ultimately signs, and is as good as he seems, next year we have Tuitt, Nix, and Day as the best defensive line in the nation, and with Eddie and Isaac right behind, and Kona and Tony to back up Lou. You really think Jones isn't going to be a starter?
You really think Jones isn't going to be a starter?
I don't, personally. I think he is going to play a lot, but I don't think he is supplanting Day.
I personally tend to disagree with Ironman. I think Jarron Jones (that's the Jones we're talking about, right?) has the prototypical size to be an every down player at end. I think Day is going to be one of those guys who's on the field as much as the "starters" but floats around a lot playing end in a 3 man front or tackle in a 4 man front and especially playing a lot on passing downs with his quickness off the ball.
He'll probably be listed as the starter next year (and maybe forever) but I think Jones is the better fit for base personnel because of his length and will play as such accordingly. 6'5" 300 vs. 6'1" 285.
You basically nailed it. The problem with last year's class is that the staff focused most of their energy on skill position players AND it as supposed to be a very small class... no more than I think 18-20 kids. So our staff turned away guys like Schutt (supposedly has crazy parents or something... I have no idea) and Bolden mainly because of space and the position they play. If Joe Bolden was in the '13 or '11 class he'd be a part of the team. Schutt I imagine would be similar.
The most ironic thing about the '12 class is that it ended up as a colossal failure in some respects because the staff had the "perfect" small class... then lost three 5players to different things at the textbook wrong time. There was so much top tier talent in the '12 class it's crazy... if you throw in Darby, Shephard, Greenberry to go with the guys we did eventually sign it looks a lot like USC's dream class of a month ago. It can't be mentioned enough how oversigning puts ND at a disadvantage. This is a perfect example if what you say is true. They could've accepted Schutt's and Bolden's verbals from the beginning and in the end, with all the de-commits, things would've worked out. But because ND plays by the rules, they had to gamble. Unfortunately, they lost. I may never get over the "what if" aspect of last year's class.
Seriously, dude. Can you imagine last year's potential class coupled with this one? It would be the kind of 2 year haul that sets you up for straight dominance. Kinda makes me sad to think about...

Owe you a rep.

These are good reasons to call into work, no? Tell em you have explosive diarrhea and they will beg you not to come in. Recruiting can have its side effects but do not forget to turn them to your advantage![]()
