they say in politics always leak the bad news on a friday late afternoon in the hopes it gets lost over the weekend....manti and his agents do this on midnigt on a friday...cant the timing be more worse to get "your side" of the story out--doing in this in the wee hours? they needed to do this schaap thing the night after jacks presser. day late dollar short. not for us granted, but for the "masses"

The interview didn't occur at midnight. That's just when ESPN got to air it. He's innocent. End of story

WTF? I just read them. Or, is there something I'm not understanding about what I just read and the fact that there is a public link to the communication?

It was a screenshot of the DMs. Jeremy Schaap says Manti showed them to him last night. Could be that Manti allowed Schaap to take the screenshots.

dude you know what i meant...he interviews him friday night and they "break" this basically after midnight on a friday night when half the world is out partying, or aslepp in bed. the timing sucks. you want "good news" to break 1) on a weekday 2) preferrably mid afternoon so all that "good news" hits the 6-8pm news hours and can be rehased all night long leading up to the 11pm newshours as well. (see: deadspin timing of original story)
the delay by team manti has rendered his "exonoration" to a scroll...

. . . I don't understand . . .

This is what we've all been trying to say.

. . . why he felt the need to lie about anything.

Here's your answer:

A South Bend Tribune report described Te'o and Kekua touching hands during an in-person meeting in 2009 at Stanford, but Te'o said that never happened and he didn't know Kekua until 2010.

"I'd never told anybody that I've touched her hand," he said.

Te'o said he altered his stories so his family and others would think he did met Kekua in person.

"That goes back to what I did with my dad," Te'o said. "I knew that -- I even knew, that it was crazy that I was with somebody that I didn't meet, and that alone -- people find out that this girl who died, I was so invested in, I didn't meet her, as well. So I kind of tailored my stories to have people think that, yeah, he met her before she passed away, so that people wouldn't think that I was some crazy dude."

This.

I overheard someone in my office saying it was a Heisman ploy. My response, "Really? Lennay 'died' BEFORE WEEK 3? I'm pretty sure Barkley was still in the hunt then and Manziel hadn't even been mentioned.". If it was week 8 or later, at least it'd would have been more believable as some kind of ND ruse."

And furthermore, did anyone actually see NDs HeIsManti campaign? It looked like my HS A/V club edited it (back in '99).
I don't think they could pull it off.

Plus the Heisman had already been awarded to Gino Smith at that point. If I recall correctly.

I touched on this before, lets say that Manti developed a relationship with this girl, online. Never meets her face to face. She has a car accident, discovers she has cancer. He doesn't feel connected and just ignores her from then on. Media gets wind of it and vilifies him. Which one is worse? Embellishing his the extent of the relationship or blowing her off completely? Because either could have happened. He never actually met her. Thats why I believe him. The whole story seems more believable with more details. It seems the person got scared when his grandmother died and figured the only way out was to fake death. If it were a publicity ploy he already had a crisis to to exploit.

All we need is a statement from Tuiasosopo and this will all be put to rest.....that and maybe the phone records since that is what is everyone is so butt hurt about. "WELL THEN WHO WAS HE TALKING TO ON THE PHONE EVERY NIGHT?!!!"

Maybe a female that was apart of the elaborate hoax that has become ever so clear?

Let the dust settle, facts will become clear, haters will hate, and Manti will live on.

GOD. Country. Notre Dame.

I do know what you mean. And I agree with your points. I just don't think it was the Manti camp's plan to get his side out at midnight.

Espn's coverage this morning has been pretty solid. This morning's Sportscenter has a pretty long piece that is better organized than last night's edition.

It seems like the wind is being sucked out of this, and Deadspin is looking worse with each passing update.

Geez, apparently losing respect for him is a poor thing to say on these boards...

As a young man who has grown up in South Bend, a lifetime ND fan, I had looked up to Manti more than any person in my life. He was my hero, my idol, my role model. I wanted my future child to be like Manti.

He was very naive, but he was also tricked pretty convincingly by some loon. I feel terrible for Manti and the embarrassment he's now had to go through.

With that said, he did lie. He did embellish. There's no denying that. I just feel sort of betrayed that I put so much faith and trust into this person, only to have it all based on what turns out to be a lie.

As more info comes out, the more it seems Manti is telling the truth... but he will always be down a few notches for me.

Thanks for sharing your personal story on this. I am sure many others feel the same. But things like this can bring the positive with the negative, that being the sobering realization that Manti is a human being who will make mistakes and face them. It doesn't make him less of a role model, especially if he learns from his experience and stands for others victimized by this scam. At some point, letting go of the perfect hero is a step towards seeing the real person, and in most cases, that's a better scenario.

Troy Aikman is gay, Ray Lewis is a murderer, every single good baseball player from the last twenty years cheated, Kerry Collins a racist, Tiger Woods is Satan and now Manti Teo is a liar and scam artist... And so is Notre Dame for that matter...

All of these things are held as fact by many in the world of sport for various reasons despite none of the above having anything to do with reality... Hooray for American Media/ myopic fans...

Whether Manti embellished or not, I believe he's a better man than I and so if he did, I won't knock him because I probably would have as well in that situation. 95% of this board would have too.

I know that.... I thought Manti was different. I should have known better.

Manti is different. The way he his handling this proves that. Who else would give the reply he gave about the people that did this to him?

Remember, he is human.

If anything, I am more confused by and have less belief in the Te'o version of the events this morning.

I really hope Golic is back Monday

Deadspin is driving me crazy attempting to still paint Manti as a liar. Their post about how they checked Manti's followers on Tuesday and no Ronaiah so how could the alleged apology take place is idiotic. It would take 5 mins for them to follow, apologize, and unfollow. Just because they checked once or even 100 times doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Not to mention they are pretty much calling Schaap and ESPN liars also

As bad as Deadspin is looking now, I am kinda glad that they broke the story instead of ESPN. Can you imagine the glee that they would have taken if they broke the story first?

Of course, a corollary to this is the fact that blogs, Twitter, Facebook, have all changed the way news is collated, relayed and reported now; so maybe ESPN, SI and the other "news agencies" that cover sports will now see the need to catch up. Just having a presence on Twitter and Facebook is not enough. You need to be part of what is going on so you can see the changing currents of a story.

In any event, I am just glad that this is all over now and that Manti can move on with this life as a bad A S S LB for an NFL team.

If the Niners were not already so stacked at LB, I would love for him to go there!
