its almost like the espn's and websites milking this for all its worth are bummed out now that this is breaking mantis way with all the facts coming out. (there go the ratings and hits).

whats worse is that this is breaking very quickly and old media/as well as the new media are NOT keeping up with all of it. they are behind on the facts on their scrolls, on air discussions etc.

its a clown show. no journalistic integrity or desire to actaully get to the TRUTH.
facts arenot fitting their agenda anymore.

so disappointed in our "free press".

where have you gone Bob Woodward

It is intersting. Twitter is what allowed this story to even become. Without it Manti never "meets" Lennay. Much of the media do not understand how Manti could have fallen for this hoax as they do not understand the entire Twitter world.

Now Twitter is breaking the story wide open and these same media members, that do not understand the how of this story, are being beaten to the punch by that same medium. Serves them right.

After Tuiososopo's confession, it looks like the media has started to make the narrative about him. Probably a good thing.

Ah, the Adam Schefter approach. Break the news first, fact check later.

Good on Deadspin for looking into it. Something that should've been done a long time ago.

This is what still just leaves me dumbfounded. How could a story (the original sick gf at Stanford thing) that was this big and so widely publicized go unchecked for so long? Didn't somebody at Stanford wonder why they'd never heard of her or why she wasn't in their system? No reporter tried to track her or her family down? No red flags were raised when there was no coverage of her funeral and no newspaper obituary, and nobody noticed there was no Carson, CA? Everybody just ran with a feelgood story and apparently nobody actually stopped and asked where were the facts or noticed all the red flags that should've been incredibly obvious.

The only questions that remain for me are

1) Why was this not nipped in the bud earlier? At least sometime between January 8th and two days ago.

2) How much did Manti embellish the situation and if so, why?

2013 tough guy nominee... Good job, cowboy.

Ok...if you watch the video it is two people telling the moderator ( "media") to shut the **** up. This is what I feel about the whole situation. This is a pretty personal issue and the coverage is far too crazy.

As a corrollary, I was not telling you to shut the **** up rather that was the meaning behind the video which you posted "?" in response to. Got it?

Go take a xanax.

We all knew Manti was somewhat innocent in all this. And all of you who are now yelling "TOLD YOU SO" from the rooftops, are missing some key points. The issue has gone from Teo was in on it, to Teo was duped, however, he lied his *** off even after the Dec 6th phone call.

Neither side can comment, but the # was the # of this girl. It was this same girls voice on the other end. He mentioned the girlfriend days after this call and hasn't said jack squat about it for almost a month and half. Clearly he knew at Christmas. Why is it taking so long for him to refute everything publicly?

Letting speculation run rampant is just letting this infection fester.

The press has mostly become about creating a product... not providing accurate information.

Yes, it's clear he was tricked, but now we just want to know what his reasoning was for still keeping the story up, and what his reasoning for portraying this girl as "possibly the love of his life" when it's clear that wasn't really the case.

He certainly made this a bigger story than what it was and that's pretty disappointing, but much more of Te'o's story is true and amazing.

Normally I wouldn't post that kinda stuff, but I laughed out loud at both. I appreciate this well done humor, despite the theme.

I pretty much agree. I'm relieved that the evidence is now making it clearer and clearer that Manti was not "in on it" from the beginning, but it doesn't change the fact that he has culpability in this situation. As someone who is sympathetic to Manti, is familiar with his background and the type of person he is and wants to believe the best about him, I think I can at least understand how and why he perpetuated and embellished the situation. But I wouldn't expect a neutral person to be as willing to understand and forgive. So I still want to see Manti stand up and address the situation, which will take some bravery on his part, but he put himself in this situation so that's his cross to bear.

I'm on my phone. Didn't see a video, just a miserable attempt at some sort of a message. Got it? Xanax taken.

Manti doesn't owe us anything and I am fine with him going by his own timeline.

From Bonnie Bernstein
IF everything holds up: Manti Te'o was duped by a guy who had a prior history of “Catfishing.” He was completely mortified. He lied to avoid further humiliation and any distractions for Notre Dame en route to the BCS Championship.

That still leaves some holes. Why did Te’o say he met Lennay Kukua at Stanford and tell his father they’d spent time together? Was he was embarrassed about meeting someone online? Quite possibly. I know people who have fudged cyber-setup stories. Didn't Te'o think it was bogus that Lennay canceled/no-showed every time they were supposed to meet? Yup. But I can personally attest to how love can distort the rational thought process. Make you think things are ok. That aaaalll the excuses are copasetic, even though outsiders looking in would scratch their heads. Especially young love. And if Te’o is as devout a Mormon as he so proclaims, and he’s a virgin, the value of the emotional bond might supersede the physical. Who are we to judge?

But ultimately, here's what it comes down to for me. I don’t subscribe to the notion "a lie is a lie is a lie." I really do try to understand the psychology behind it. Manti Te'o had an inspirational story that was embraced by Golden Domers, and lots of non-Notre Dame folks, at a time when the Irish were finally emerging from obscurity. He appreciated the support, especially with the Heisman dangling. Probably even reveled in it a little bit. And you know what? What 21 year-old wouldn't? What 41 year-old wouldn't?

And then, Te’o found out he was flat-out Punk'd. Imagine getting that phone call. “Hi. It’s your dead girlfriend.” The confusion. The anger. The embarrassment of knowing that you, one of college football’s top defensemen, just got sacked. And you were too naïve to see the oncoming blitz.

Te’o consciously chose to continue perpetuating the storyline. Don’t get in the way of the team’s run to a national title. Figure out how to handle this mess publicly when we get back from Miami, he probably thought. Does that make him a liar? Yes it does. Does it make him a liar of Lance Armstrong proportions? Did he irreparably hurt anyone? Does it make him a bad kid? In the grand scheme of things, my gut tells me… no.
