Lennay Kekua, A Hoax!

I do find some irony in random people on an online message board finding it difficult to believe Te'o formed a relationship with someone he only knew online. I've seen quite a few friendships form on IE over the years and I doubt many of us know each other outside of this site. I know exactly one person from here in real life and that's because I told a long-time friend and ND fan to join. For all we know, Old Man Mike is just a highly intelligent, wise beyond his years 15 year old.

More than 100% sure that Manti dated a girl from St Mary's at the end of last year from at the latest November.

Espn reporter on radio said player was on campus but played with Teo 2 years ago. Not this year, pretty 100% sure thats what he said on radio.

I am pretty sure ESPN is just running with the original Pepper on Sports article - Pepper On Sports. Notice none of their reporters are putting their name behind this.

It could very well be a disgruntled teammate or it could be entirely fictional.

It would not be the first time ESPN has used another source and just regurgitates it as fact without checking on their own. This whole story has reached national sensationalism levels. Real journalism is getting thrown out the window. Entertain over report. Opinion is fact. Guilty till proven otherwise.

I can now put this to bed as 'a young guy that was duped due to his nature and persona'. Now for me its actually funny watching espn come off like a gossip rag. These guys have finally become a cartoon of themselves. Its giggles as they walk all over themselves trying develope the story. They should all be out walking their pet rats.

Dan Fox, who updated his twitter photo to prominently include Te'o:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Media makes me sick to my stomach</p>— Dan Fox (@DPFoxy) <a href="https://twitter.com/DPFoxy/status/292117420632584192" data-datetime="2013-01-18T03:53:15+00:00">January 18, 2013</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I love that this team has Te'o's back like this, and that the "anonymous former teammate" really was an outlier.

The frustrating part about that is ESPN (at least ESPN radio during my ride home from work) is reporting it as "most of Manti Te'o's teammates", not just as one person, believed Lennay to not really be his gf.

No... But I know who she is and it was fairly public

So you're pretty tied in over there. Just curious, what's your opinion on all of this? You probably have a better insight into Manti outside of football than most of us.

Just heard this one, "if Alabama can have 15 national titles then Manti can have a girlfriend in California." LOL

Apologies if this is uncharitable, but my first thought was Brian Smith.

Plenty of people have fallen for the fake profile girl thing. Heck I know people who have done it. Not catfish specifically but flirted and got guys to come over to their block, just to laugh at how gullible they are. Obviously they never met and did it for the sport of it, but some of these guys kept coming back over and over again. They never met this fictitious person, never spoke to them on the phone, etc. They always had around 300 friends on the facebook page and always had a cute girl profile picture and not many other pictures, but still very believable.

I could easily see a naive (for the lack of a better word) and family kid fall for something like this, because I've seen plenty of others fall for it in the past. Granted though, these relationships never lasted long, but if there was someone communicating via phone and there was someone truly sick behind it, it could easily have lasted a lot longer.

Theres a good amount of people out there that do things like this, but I can't fathom them taking it this far. It takes someone truly sick to do that.

Has anyone talked about the roses Te'o sent to "Lennay" after her death? Who did he send them to?

uncle on radio (talked to Brian Te'o's brother)
Te'o family worried about Manti's mindest right now

Uncle met Ronaiah Tuiasasopo (RT) and RT said he was with troy [polamalu?] at the all poly camps. uncle knew wasnt true because uncle ran the camps.

uncle knew something "off" at this point. manti talked to Lennay, said pooka was on phone. uncle saying pooka is really RT's little sister.

niece melissa tried to comfort pooka and pooka wouldn't speak for herself.

RT made bogus claims about Troy's football camps to manti's uncle

RT making up all sorts of **** in attempt to get to Manti in any way he could. RT used some charity hoax to get at Manti.

Vibe was that RT is a shady guy.

Uncle called Brian and warned him to tell Manti.

Day after Thanksgiving, Manti told his father that he wouldn't get involved with RT.

Gave uncle impression that he was close to Lennay; used Pooka as a pawn.

Uncle is sooo mad RT killed off Lennay. It made Manti's parents worried about Manti more than grieve for their own mom

Brian said he talked to Lennay on phone and also Lennay's brother

RT used his real sister Pooka as a pawn. RT made sure she said zero words.

Uncle thinks it's feasible that RT would/could send a girl to play role of Lennay.

Uncle feels strongly, says motive was to get to Manti to give MONEY using a fake foundation/charity. RT said Lennay dying wish was for another fake person to get thru Stanford (who also had leukemia)

Uncle recalled meeting him at USC after he saw deadspin article. Claims others in the community have all sorts of dirt on RT.

Uncle said he would prosecute this guy to the fullest, but that's Brian's and Manti's call.

Believes Manti is 100% a victim.

Manti worried about family not in a good place; needs to use football to get his mind right again.

Re: Manti getting phone call from dead Lennay
Manti told caller he wanted proof. Then he told parents, who alerted coaches right away.

Thought Manti would be talking today, but believes he will be soon. Says he was definitely distracted for NCG.

Uncle and Te'o family have nothing against all the tuiasasopos, just RT. Big family that is dear friends of Te'os.
Tried to clean this up to make it more readable. Some very good info here, and I know another link was put up about this interview.

Obviously Te'o's uncle is a biased source, but it's a hell of a lot more information than the news media is digging up right now.

Why would you even throw his name out there when he's in a pool of a bout 15-20 potential possibities?

Because it's the most recognizable?

He's hardly the most recognizable name of those who played with Te'o 2 years ago. He's just made some offensive comments about the program in the past and burned some bridges already.

I would prefer not to make my full opinions public (or on PM so dont PM please) but I can say almost certainly Manti was catfished and hoaxed, but also exaggerated about his relationship. I talked to a couple of news stations today but they were not interested in hearing my story which is essentially the truth IMO and were looking for info to incriminate Manti.

So he embellished because he was embarrassed (about dating a girl he'd never met) or because he liked the attention? In your opinion?

There have been a few things posted throughout the past ~2000 that can give insight to jimmy's comment.
