Manti Te'o statement, issued via CAA: "Emotional relationship with a woman I met online." Not at Stanford in 2009. The key discrepancy.
This is where the whole thing could implode. He HAS to admit to lying one way or the other.
More than a couple of my friends have met girls via online sites/chatrooms/emails.
I've met a few of them, not knowing how the relationship started. NOT ONE TIME did anyone of them fess up to being "Matched" or "Meeting in a singles chatroom". You usually find out later when you catch them in a lie, or they finally fess up after a while.
It was always, "Oh, someone introduced us" or "Through work".
Manti met this "girl" as a young man in college online. Going "online" to find a relationship carries a certain negative stigma. He was probably embarressed to admit how it started, so he probably came up with the whole Stanford bit, running it by "her" to make sure it was ok. And of course it was.
That one lie has exploded in a way not ONE of us could ever fathom being a possible outcome.
Maybe there are some other faucets to the story, but for now, I still have him in the same regard as I did, with the exception of him being a bit too gulible.
