10: Davonte Neal - Can he be as reliable as Toma but be able to utilize his breakaway speed?

9: Amir Carlisle - Are the injuries behind him?

8: Sheldon Day - Can he become effective enough to draw a double team a la Nix and Tuitt and free up the LBs?

7: Jarrett Grace - Don't need him to be Manti but need him to elevate his game to a noticeable level.

6: Chris Brown - Can he become Amari Cooper?

5: Jarron Jones - Need him to be that dominating DL off the bench.

4: Ben Koyack - Can he become a real threat?

3: Tuitt - Faded towards the end of the season. Can he go toe to toe with Clowney?

2: Ishaq Williams - ND needs him to breakout this year.

1: Gunner Kiel - Can he elevate his game to surpass Golson? Can he elevate his game to the point it forces Golson to elevate his? (Win/win situation IMO)

Other notables: Davaris Daniels, Lo Wood, Shumate, Nick Martin, Ronnie Stanley

I'll also add in Jaylon Smith, Max Redfield, and Alex Anzalone.

Can we close with Vanderdoes and Hollins?

Literally, everyone needs to step up their game. They learned to win close but can they win big..consistently.

So many questions. So much time. Let the games begin.

My top 10:

10) Jarron Jones - Defensive line depth critical.
9) Ronnie Stanley - Is he ready to step in.
8) Kaivare Russell - Can he build on his freshman year and play man-man on a tight cover.
7) Sheldon Day - Can he continue to build off a strong freshman campaign
6) Troy Niklas - Can he step up in the receiving role.
5) Nick Martin/Matthew Hegarty/Conor Hanratty - OLine Depth Deep enough without playing a freshman? (Pick One, I know I'm cheating but this is key to our ability to execute on offense)
4) Jarret Grace - Ready to step in for Manti?
3) Stephon Tuitt - Continued improvement
2) DaVaris Daniels - Can he build off performance in NCG
1) Everett Golson - Don't think Keil will overtake barring a complete meltdown.

Stephon Tuitt freshman year: 30 tackles 3TFL 2 Sacks
Sheldon Day freshman year: 23 tackles 4TFL 2 sacks

Imagine if he improves to production levels similar to Tuitt after year one!

2 Tuits and a Louis Nix on the D-Line.

Here are the 10 kids I will be watching.

- Amir Carlisle (Is he an effective 3 down back?)
- Will Mahone (is he good enough to crack the rotation?)
- DaVaris Daniels (is he a star?)
- Davonte Neal (is he good enough to start at this point?)
- James Onwualu (will he suprise and see significant PT?)
- Matt Hegarty (can he come-back and replace Cave by the Fall?)
- Ronnie Stanley (will he start at LT and allow us to shift Z. Martin to OG?)
- Romeo Okwara (will he grow into a DE, will he suppplant Williams?)
- Jarrett Grace (werewolf?)
- Jaylon Smith (how do you get this kid on the field?)

I can't believe you've been the only one to mention Mahone....was he not offensive scout team player of the year??? Can he be Jonas 2.0 for us??? I'm looking forward to seeing how he performs this spring!

1. Chris Brown - more than just a deep threat?
2. Davonte Neal - lay claim to full time duty at slot WR? Maybe get reps outside?
3. Justin Ferguson - what number will he stick with? (can he get reps behind TJ and DD?)
4. CJ Prosise - great athleticism/size, steal the punt returner job? How much playing time at S?
5. Shumate - lock down the nickel, or compete for a starting spot at S?
6. Redfield - take the nickel from Shumate, or sit for a year? Play at S right away?
7. Onwualu - hybrid? RB? WR? Other?
8. Bryant - pass pro looked good against Jaylon at AA Bowl, can he crack the top 2 at RB?
9. Folston - Theo 2.0? KeiVarae 2.0?
10. Rochell - Play right away to help out Day/Jones in the rotation?

Gunner Giel is a total wild card. He could have a huge impact, minor impact (most likely at least until EG leaves), or be a non factor for the foresable future.

Personally, I think Bryant is the next hybrid-RB, and Folston is more like a healthy Armando Allen. I am talking about their skill sets, not thier talent level.

Brayant is built and fights, but he is not a power back and he's got great hands.
Folston is faster than some people are giving him credit for.

I believe offensive scout team POY went to walk-on Nick Fitzpatrick. But Mahone looked really good in spring ball.

Oh ok...I'm not entirely sure...I thought it was stated that he won an award at the Echoes...

I remember someone saying that, but I also remember it being a walk-on.

I am very curious about Mahone, and about 35 other players, but we were limited to 10!

I think it would be great to see George Atkinson at WR (assuming he hands for it). I'm not saying he's a bad running back. In fact, I think he's a good running back with the potential to be great. However, I think he could be an elite receiver like Robert Woods or Amari Cooper. He has absolutely incredible straight line speed and I'm sure he could run some beautiful slants too.

That said, I don't see him changing positions because he is the de facto number 1 running back right now. I don't think Greg Bryant, Amir Carlise, or Tarean Folston will be as game ready as he is.

The compromise I'm hoping for is a few deep passes to Atkinson on wheel routes out of the backfield and also out of the RB/slot position.

10. Russell's continued development. Will he become a super star?
9. Collinsworth. Will he show the promise that he did pre-injury
8a. Fox. Will he finally turn into an NFL talent?
8b. Carlo. Assuming he comes back, same as Fox.
7. Chris Brown. Will he be able to catch this year?
6. Stephon Tuitt. Will he continue to turn into the second best defense end in the country behind Clowney
5. Louis Nix. Will he be the top DL taken in the draft?
4. Amir Carlisle. How will he play coming off his injury/redshirt?
3. Nick Martin. I'd be shocked if he doesn't start somewhere on the OL.
2. Jaylon Smith. Will he be good enough to start?
1. Everett Golson. He is going to be a top 10 QB next year.

My top 10 list of guys I'll be watching consists more of guys I haven't seen yet.

10. Jarron Jones - can he spell Tuitt/Day effectively and be a valuable contributor off the bench?
9. Ronnie Stanley - O-Line depth is an issue. Can he land a starting spot or at least provide much-needed depth?
8. Austin Collinsworth - Was supposed to be a major contributor this season and some think he starts next year.
7. Jarret Grace - Teo's likely replacement.
6. Max Refield - ND could use his speed and athleticism in the defensive backfield next year.
5. Matt Hegarty - Had a serious non-football related issue. Does he grab the starting center gig next fall? More importantly, just want him to be healthy.
4. Davonte Neal - Was a major recruit. Can be more effective returning punts and perform well in the slot?
3. Ishaq Williams - Can he make more of an impact next season?
2. Amir Carlisle - May possibly be our starting HB. You could also throw Mahone, Bryant, and Folston in here as well, I suppose.
1. Jaylon Smith - I have no doubt he sees significant minutes next season, but where?

How can anyone's list not have Davaris Daniels?

How could it take 19 posts before someone thought of linemen?

Thank you Ironman, and Domina Nostra, Walter White, Son of Kenmare.

You all just saw a Championship Game with one Championship OLine.

How many of ND OLs would start for Alabama?

Don't embarass yourself with a response, people. Cave was good but he was no Barrett Jones. On a bad foot Jones was still able to engage LBs on the second level. Bama's OL consistently gets blockers to the second level. Their RBs have holes at the LOS AND downfield routinely where we hope for a crease somewhere for Wood to slither through and maybe a receiver can throw a block.

You guys are arguing about the flash not about who makes the flash possible. Who sets the table?

By the way who is ND's starting center next year? Forget the wishing and hoping (and praying for medical recovery) who is the guy that has SHOWN he's the heir apparent?

NOBODY.

How many minutes of PT will ND's starting center have?

It's essential that ND have at least 3 guys leap forward on the OLine.

I'm aware 5 start and how many return in '13. I'm also aware that while ND's OLine Corps has been depleted through injury, death, and transfer, we were extremely fortunate in the health of the starting 5 last year.

BGIF, my friend --- on this board almost NOBODY thinks about the offensive line unless it's an afterthought. Flash and dash and then just maybe, why didn't we run the ball more?

But everybody knows that I'm the "BIGS are more significant than littles" curmudgeon, so I've been thinking of little else all year.

To answer one question: in my opinion Zach Martin would have started for Alabama over their rookie [but real good] LT. Martin is already NFL good, but needs more buddies to make it all work.

So, next year, eyes open: Thank God Zach is back. I have faith that Chris will get better and "get all the way there" too. I don't believe that he's far off. And then what?

I'm still a fan of Christian Lombard. I believe that he is in the Watt category [already good enough to beat good opposition, not good enough to beat elite competition.] I believe that most of his errors this season were funky reads on OLB or DB blitzes where he was VERY decisive in who he took out, but others didn't pick up the loose trash. I am eyeing him with great interest. And hope.

The other two line spots should bring great anxiety if not night terrors to ND fans hoping for a return to the BCS next year. I've stated elsewhere on this board that I believe that the defense will be terrific [better than this year], and the offense will have a kicka$$ receiving core. If Everett still has the job, he will obviously be an upgrade over his younger self, and if Gunner has the job he will by deduction be an upgrade too. That leaves ONLY the RB situation and the O-Line to stop us from getting back to a major bowl game. [and punting]

There is so much diverse talent running around the ND roster that I have difficulty imagining RB being a significant problem. Kelly will find some guy who will consistently passcatch and blitz block and they all can run. THAT LEAVES THE O-LINE.

Center and the right side... what are we going to get there? We have a very small number of options to man these positions: Lombard somewhere; NMartin, Stanley, maybe Hegarty, and maybe Elmer. I have seen nothing yet to tell me that Hanratty's apparent lack of quickness and flexibility will translate into a quality starting lineman, but will be delighted to be wrong. Mark Harrell could be the second coming Markise Pouncey, but there was no doubt that Kelly was grooming Hegarty for the spot not Harrell.

Lombard, Stanley, NMartin, Hegarty, Elmer. Who gets the three jobs and where do they play? THAT's who everybody should be looking at, and, yes, Everett and Gunner. As BGIF said: Gentlemen we have a problem. Can we get it solved? Hiestand's good. Kelly's good. The raw talent seems pretty good though unproven. Yes, we can get it done, but no one should assume that we'll just be handing it off to all our speed merchants and the holes are going to be a mile wide and something that Coach can build an entire offense around.

I'm ALWAYS optimistic that somehow our guys rise up. Sometimes that's obviously deranged fantasy. We need this development critically and fast.
