i could have sworn we went thru this in the stanley thread and consensus ended up that he did in fact burn his freshman yr. would love to be wrong here but verdict was one play and yr is lost as long as he wasnt injured (anyway congrats to Jay on joining the ND family!)

I thought the verdict was that he wasn't in enough plays the first 6 games and hasn't played since that he is eligible for a 5th year.

I actually think what happens is that if you only play in one of the first three games, and subsequently get hurt, you are very likely to get a medical-redshirt. It sounds like the NCAA may, very sensibly, hold 18 year old freshmen to a slightly lower standard when it comes to the kind of injuries that will justify the exception.
