Love this! I'm sure he's got skills if the staff invited him to walk-on.

All State in PA this year.

Prep's offense and defense were outstanding, but Chereson added another dynamic to the Ramblers. After setting a school record with nine field goals in 2011, he tacked on five more this season and set records for extra points in a season and a career. The 5-foot 10-inch, 170-pound kicker had 82 extra points this season and 135 in his career, but the most impressive part of his game was kickoffs. Chereson finished with 47 touchbacks as a senior, including an average of 52.5 yards per kickoff.

"I wanted to break the field-goal record, but finishing with 14 is great and I didn't really expect to have another great season like last year," Chereson said. "Coach Bryan Baumann worked with me this year and it really paid off. In the offseason, I worked out with my uncle and hit the weight room. That work added at least five more yards and another half second to my hang time on kickoffs."

Chereson has a standing offer from Youngstown State, while Notre Dame has offered him an opportunity to be a preferred walk-on. He has also received interest from other D-I programs but hasn't made a decision yet.

Maybe it's just a brain lapse but what' the difference between a regular walk on and a preferred walk on?

Preferred walk-on doesn't have to try out and make the team. He has a spot on the team, just not a scholarship.

would be extatic to land a solid kicker like this without using a scholly yet, but wouldn't blame the kid in the least to go somewhere else for free. HUGE debt if this kid even goes one year as a walk on.

indeed.

I suppose you would have an understanding of whether or not the family of the kid could swing that before you offer something like this right?

Otherwise it might come off a little.. I don't know.. uncomfortable?

There's always academic scholly's and other financial aid which could pare it down considerably.

True.

However, isn't that coming dangerously close to some kind of infraction? Showing interest in a kid that isn't quite football scholarship material, then giving him an academic one so he can play regardless seems a bit slippery slopish.

I'm sure I don't understand the technicalities.

Does a preferred walk-on have to be admitted already, or does the offer guarantee admission, or is the offer contingent on being accepted into the university? I'd imagine it might mean the first of those if I'm correct that admission letters went out recently.

Here are some facts about walkons:

1. A preferred walk-might as well be a scholarship recruit except that they don't sign a LOI. They get into the school and have a spot on the team. There are quite a few players on minor sports that come in on no scholarship or partial scholarship and work their way up to a full piece of the pie... preferred walkons are only uncommon for football/basketball because most kids will take a full ride to a worse school over paying their way to a school where they might not play.
2. You CAN get need based financial aid as a preferred walk-on as long as you follow the same formula as a normal student. My soccer playing roommate did this for years as the financial aid was greater than the partial scholarship he was offered.
3. You CANNOT get random "academic" aid or everyone would just give players "academic" scholarships to skirt scholarship caps.

At least that's how things worked roughly 6 years ago.

There are always scholarships that open up due to injuries, transfers, academic issues, etc. He could start as a preferred walk-on (if he really wants to play for ND) and work his way into a scholarship offer at some point. Only he can decide if this is a road he wants to take.

Yes, and I'm sure the staff are looking at all options available. Plus a degree from ND in worth every dime.

Plus plus, he could win a ring.

IF he comes, this is brillian timing, (overlapping Brindza's elgibility), allowing selectivity as Brinza graduates in a couple of years.

I'm glad to see the Staff floating this, even with the difficulties it puts a family in financially --- maybe they can afford it. I would be even more enthusiastic [to put it mildly] if this young man was a punter.

As alluded to earlier, a lot of these kids have scholarships lined up, for academic purposes, etc. And a lot of them would like to know, since the financing isn't an issue that they will get a chance to play for the Irish. So it works.

I don't care what school wants me as a preferred walk on. If another D1 school offers me a full ride and free tuition, it's hardly a decision process for me.

Plus, nearly every kid that goes to college pays for it (with loans or otherwise). Sometimes we lose sight of that as football fans. It's not exactly an insult for a kid to pay to go to college.

So you would rather get a free degree from a Podunk State College than pay for a degree from Notre Dame and get the opportunity to play for the greatest football team on planet?

Makes sense.

It is very difficult to simply get admitted to Notre Dame. If my kid got the opportunity to go to Notre Dame, I don't care how many programs offer a free ride, he/she will be going to Notre Dame and getting that education. If a kid's college choice is based simply on who gives them a free ride, then they are really missing the big picture.

I don't know the kid, but have several friends who do. I'll try and find out some info. Cathedral Prep is a private school in Erie, and is pretty expensive per year. Also, most of the students there come from wealthy families.

Not to mention, most kids (non-football players) that do go to Notre Dame (or other elite schools) could have had scholarships to go to a state school or a less prestigious school for free, and they choose not to. There is a reason for that. The cost of the degree is almost immaterial when you consider the doors that it opens for you.
