Saw this by Sapp. Does he have any offers?
Prep's offense and defense were outstanding, but Chereson added another dynamic to the Ramblers. After setting a school record with nine field goals in 2011, he tacked on five more this season and set records for extra points in a season and a career. The 5-foot 10-inch, 170-pound kicker had 82 extra points this season and 135 in his career, but the most impressive part of his game was kickoffs. Chereson finished with 47 touchbacks as a senior, including an average of 52.5 yards per kickoff.
"I wanted to break the field-goal record, but finishing with 14 is great and I didn't really expect to have another great season like last year," Chereson said. "Coach Bryan Baumann worked with me this year and it really paid off. In the offseason, I worked out with my uncle and hit the weight room. That work added at least five more yards and another half second to my hang time on kickoffs."
Chereson has a standing offer from Youngstown State, while Notre Dame has offered him an opportunity to be a preferred walk-on. He has also received interest from other D-I programs but hasn't made a decision yet.
Yes!
Maybe it's just a brain lapse but what' the difference between a regular walk on and a preferred walk on?
would be extatic to land a solid kicker like this without using a scholly yet, but wouldn't blame the kid in the least to go somewhere else for free. HUGE debt if this kid even goes one year as a walk on.
indeed.
I suppose you would have an understanding of whether or not the family of the kid could swing that before you offer something like this right?
Otherwise it might come off a little.. I don't know.. uncomfortable?
There's always academic scholly's and other financial aid which could pare it down considerably.
Does a proffered walk-on have to be admitted already, or does the offer guarantee admission, or is the offer contingent on being accepted into the university? I'd imagine it might mean the first of those if I'm correct that admission letters went out recently.

I'm glad to see the Staff floating this, even with the difficulties it puts a family in financially --- maybe they can afford it. I would be even more enthusiastic [to put it mildly] if this young man was a punter.
I don't care what school wants me as a preferred walk on. If another D1 school offers me a full ride and free tuition, it's hardly a decision process for me.
So you would rather get a free degree from a Podunk State College than pay for a degree from Notre Dame and get the opportunity to play for the greatest football team on planet?
Makes sense.
It is very difficult to simply get admitted to Notre Dame. If my kid got the opportunity to go to Notre Dame, I don't care how many programs offer a free ride, he/she will be going to Notre Dame and getting that education. If a kid's college choice is based simply on who gives them a free ride, then they are really missing the big picture.
