If I was a high profile recruit being hounded and was down to 2 schools, even if I was 99% / 1% I would still say 50/50 to keep people off my back.

True. And wasn't it a SC reporter he was talking to?

Or he is just telling a reporter something so they will get out of his face. That is what I would do.

Even if its 100% accurate, 50/50 is no more bad than good by definition.

Yep I think this probably happens more often than we tend to admit. He's talking to a USC reporter, and who knows, maybe he felt like that was the answer the reporter wanted.

best part is we are seriously in contention with two elite studs from cali. that should be usc locks and we are going in and making noise.

The reporter could have put those words in his mouth too.

Reporter: "Max, where does USC stand after your visit?"

Max: "They are still in it."

Reporter: "Would you say it's 50/50?"

Max: "Yeah"

Between TP's last couple cryptic statements and Redfield's choice not to recommit on his recent visit, ND seems to be in a good position.

I think the spector of Kiffin eventually getting the boot and no current defensive coordinator has got to be on this young man's mind. I agree with WoolyBug

Imagine, before this season, somebody says to you:

"ND will go undefeated, but have to face double digit favorite Alabama in the title game."

You'd take it, no?

Yes, but 50/50 is worse than where we reportedly stood with this recruitment last week. Granted, it may be better than where we stood Sunday night, but the point is we are a net loss in momentum here. USC is squarely in it, so 50/50 doesn't make me all tingly inside, regardless of the number of stars. Now if you want to tell me we're 50/50 for EV, then that's something to celebrate.

I thought the general consensus on this board was that if Redfield didn't commit to the Trojans this weekend, we'd feel pretty good about that. So shouldn't we be feeling good? Or did we fool ourselves into thinking that a non-committment would be a sign that we're clearly in the lead...in which case a 50/50 isn't a feel-good thing...

He's saying it's 50/50 between the two schools to build up drama for his announcement at the UA game. If he said ND or USC was the leader it would be easy figure out where he probably ends up.

I understand feeling that way.

If being a double digit dog to God's team Alabama doesn't make you feel all tingly inside, though, I'm not sure what would!

Tee Martin, USC wide receivers coach turned down Tennessee. I have no clue if this has much impact on Max's decision or not.

Don't how it affects Max's decision but I think it is a mistake by Tee Martin. I think Butch Jones can do well at Tennesse but he should last longer than Kiffin regardless even with an unrealistic SEC fan base. I hope I'm wrong and for ND's sake Kiffin is the coach at USC for the next decade. My guess though is that Lane gets fired after next year and Tee Martin is left looking for a job.

In the same article as the 50/50 quote, Max says the following which IMO bodes very well for ND:

""I might be getting to an emotional decision, which I need to get away [from] and pretty much just narrow it down to a business decision," he said. "Take away pretty much just the factors that are extremely important and will help me with the rest of my life."

Sounds like the Cali roots have recently swayed him to USC, but that the 40 year business decision is what he believes is most important. If he truly believes this, it should end well for us.

I agree that this statement means he's letting outside people and the home circumstances sway him to stay and the best business (40 year) decision is to go to ND.

From the II article I really think BK made a mistake in the timing/talking to only Mr and Mrs Redfield. Kiffin is coming on strong and he will be in their home either this week or next. I just think USC is trending up fast and we are fading

Obviously BK thought it was important to show how high Max was on our board by giving him his first in-home visit, above even all of our current commits or other prospects. I know it meant something to his and his parents. Hopefully we can get Diaco out there next before the UA game.

This is what I was thinking ... assuming he doesn't take another job I think the strategy is to show Max and his family that he is our priority early and then use Diaco as the closer.

Another Diaco interception type situation to close the deal would be great. It would only add to Bod Diaco's legend.
