Diaco NOT Going to BC

I would LOVE for Diaco to be the next football coach at Notre Dame

Hopefully it's gonna be awhile before we need one of those. And it's hard to imagine him sticking around that long.

Nice that he didn't wind up at BC. I hate BC. And with Purdue closed up that takes away the two most likely landing spots in the first round of coaching openings.
Now for Round Two. I kind of think Wisconsin's a little big of a job for him at this stage. But Cincy seems like a possibility, if Butch Jones is nuts enough to try Colorado. Someone mentioned Louisville. That, too.
The one that worries me most is Pitt, potentially in Round Three if Wisconsin indeed goes and gets Paul Chryst. Diaco seems like a natural there, and could maybe even build them into a consistent program with Penn State down. Would suck to play his defense every year.
Not out of the woods yet.

We have already seen what happens when we hire coaches with no head coaching experience...Prefer not to have that experiment again.

Incredible news. It probably wouldn't be THAT big a blow for Diaco to leave, at least in the big picture, but he's a great coach and extremely likable. I hope we get at least a few more years of Bobby D.

I have no problem with Diaco and Martin leaving. I actually hope they do and become successful head coaches. Maybe a 2nd tour of duty at ND would be in the future. The problem I saw was leaving before the title game. I fully expect him to be a head coach after next season and can see the same with Chuck Martin. I can see Cooks being elevated to DC too.

Be exciting to see who BK brings in to replace if/when it does happen.

There is one awesome opportunity here.

The negotiation needs to be put in place: Kelly followed by Martin, followed by Diaco. It is not as strange as you think. I don't think there is an ego issue. I think all three want to achieve perfection. Kelly gave up a lot with his family. He is a 20 hour a day kind of guy for everything. That takes it's toll. He doesn't need the money. In his late 50's with a number of Nattys, he could move to a consultant position, and trim back his hours. Maybe AD, because Jack didn't want to stay that long. Then Martin could take over.

Remember, Kelly Martin and Dicao, are one brain from oldest to youngest. Martin could stay to his mid to late 50's. See conversation with Kelly. As associate head coach, Diaco could have taken over more and more responsibility. That would be the perfect hire. Fifteen years of on the job training, before taking over.

With the right financial packages, the right long term assistants could be brought in, and they could be groomed to move to HC positions elsewhere or kept on as Harry and Bobby perfer. The revenue generated by the dominant Irish teams of this era would be staggering, even by historical standards.

Compensation would not be a problem. For those that like numbers and models. Consider that the day of the huge pay for coaches is starting to wane. This would make ND an island in the sea of diminishing compensation.

Right. Obviously winning helps, but unlike the last few (or even many of his peers at big-time programs) Kelly seems to actually enjoy the job and all that comes with it.
It's way too early to talk about succession planning.

If look back thru ND's history, you see the best coaches (outside of Rockne) last 10-12 years usually. So, I would say that Kelly would be no different and we are going to see 7-9 more years of him.

It's like the presidency. You can see any coach here, successful and especially if not, have their hair gray and lose it's thickness pretty quickly.

I've heard from a couple of guys on the team that Diaco is WAY too pumped to be playing Alabama. Like life goal-dream kinda big (which it is). Even over the last week they've said how much he talks about it. I can't see him leaving without being able to coach in the championship, and therefore I can't see him leaving this year.
