I wonder if he was told that he could take visits if he promised the last one to USC...

All part of Kiffin's master plan to rip our hearts out again.......

Let's not forget he is a master recruiter, ND needs to stay on this kid.

I think we can all agree that recruiting is a cut throat business and a lot of coaches will do most anything to land a kid. Kiffin and Urban Liar are silver tongue devils and until Max says he's Irish I'll stay a little worried.

He's Irish. He wants to take more officials because he will never have this experience again. An official to Southern Cal would be great for any kid. I think his mind is made up for the Irish, however.

If his master plan is of the same caliber as his game plans, I'm not worries. And if his master plan is better than his game plans, then he should probably be spending less time on the former and more on the latter. After all, he has to prepare for the Sun Bowl.

will always be worried with Kiffin and Orgeron-especially late in the cycle. these guys know what they are doing on the recruiting front (not so much on the gridirion :)

Sounds like his mind is made up and giving it one last look to ensure his decision is the right one for himself. I can respect that even if he sticks with SC. I suppose we will know for sure in a couple of days.

Just saw a piece on ESPN insider that said Oregon will no longer recruit him, and doesn't want him to visit, because they believe he's heading to ND.

USC clearly trying their hardest to get back in the race here/keep him away from ND. Interested to see what happens. Think he ends up Irish, but I liked it better when USC had a bunch of guys waiting in the wings as 'reserves' vs. now having a bunch of wafflers... they're going to fight much harder. And you can never count out 'ol Kiffy.

Unless he is going to play receiver for them. 3 safeties gets a little crowded.

I'm already counting him out at USC by this time next year, and I think recruits would be wise to do the same. Kiffin has the opposite of the Midas touch. What has he ever won?

No doubt about it........USC is scrambling to keep their class and while I love everything I am hearing on Redfield, until he faxes that letter.........I will be nervous. We've done this dance all to often and it seems USC comes out the winner way too much for my liking.

cautiously optimistic here and hoping Kiffen sticks around for a few more years to really ruin USC's program, he is a twit and I love watching him screw things up.

Has Redfield set a timeline for announcing a decision recently?

For those more familiar with current depth chart, assuming steady progress, when do we think Redfield could be an every-down defender for the Irish?

I'd feel a lot more confident right now if it was Sapp or Wiltfong with a "good source" confirming this.

Personally, I see him playing a lot, just not being the guy yet, and probably not being that at least until his Sophmore year. This is how I see it shaking out by next fall:

Strong:
1a) Nicky Baratti*
1b) Elijah Shumate
3a) Chris Badger
3b) John Turner

Free:
1) Matthias Farley
2) Max Redfield
3) C.J. Prosise
4) Eliar Hardy (I think he should move to corner unless he packs on some pounds)

The fact that Matthias has come in with so little experience and played so well tells me he is going to continue to develop. Add to that 12 wins and a NC game under his belt, and I think its very likely that holds the starting spot, even against a freshman phenom. But remember, our defense rotates a ton and plays lots of situational guys, so MR will play, no doubt.

*to argue that we won't have an uber-athleteic, white safety getting significant PT is to not understand ND football. Those guys are drawn to SB like moths to a porch lamp.

1a) Nicky Baratti

3b) Nicky Barratti

The fact that Matthias has come in with so little experience and played so well tells me he is going to continue to develop. Add to that 12 wins and a NC game under his belt, and I think he holds the starting spot, even against a freshman phenom.

Farley's ascent to starter reminded me how hard accurate depth chart forecasts are. I wouldn't have expected him to beat out McCarthy (I mean what was the point of bringing him back), Hardy (disappointing that he is on demo squad for a second year ... hopefully he pops soon) or even Shumate (who we thought was a pure safety unlikely to get moved to corner before someone like Prosise, who now looks likely to move to DOG before CB). You just never know how guys develop. Hell, you don't even know what you have till they get to campus and start practicing.

Redfield is a talented dude, but I think the original question was when will he be an "every-down player." It that means starting-caliber, maybe right away. If it means he never comes off the field a la Harrison Smith last year and Motta/Farley this year, it might not be till his senior year. When Kelly has two equally capable or complementary players he likes to rotate them (Fox/Calabrese, Slaughter/Motta last year). I think Redfield will probably be able to start rotating in pretty soon, but I doubt he will completely lock down one of the safety spots while guys like Shumate, Baratti, Farley and Prosise are still around. Those guys all seem like football players.

One thing I could see happening: a Fox/Calabrese like rotation with Redfield and Farley. Farley, a big, tough, physical player like Calabrese, may be a bit better against the run, at least at first, and Redfield, like Fox, may be a bit better against the pass.

I really like the athleticism we got building back there. Be nice if we got Slaughter back for another year to provide some experience/guidance back there, but I am happy with what we got building and hope Redfield is in that mix.

Thanks for that breadown.

I'm a little worried as I previously stated, but the biggest difference from before is that USC isn't undefeated and playing for a NC and we are. I think in the past some recruits wanted to see the "proof in the pudding".
