My observations from watching Elmer @ Fenton-Midland scrimmage:
The dude is big!! Like a Man against boys.
Lined up at Left Tackle on O and DE on D.
Great run blocking he was pancaking guys on practically every running play.
Not too much pass blocking to judge, his team runs the ball alot.
Good quickness though and finishes his blocks with a nasty streak.

Cool point of info. Midland's team are known as the Chemics. Pretty unique name for a sports team i think!

Midland is the home of Dow Chemical and I believe the company gave money to the high school.

Only team in America that doesn't need to play under the lights at night.

I am really glad to see this, even though I don't put as much stock in the services as I do in Kelly's picks.

Let us also not forget that he was either hurt and wasn't able to to practice for awhile or missed some things that caused him to get a bit rusty. (I know I'm in the ballpark)

For him to bounce back like this is pretty damn sweet and reiterates why he was towards the top last season when rankings for these kids were initially released.

Rated the number two player in the state by a local guy.

Mick McCabe picks the state's top-25 players. Here are Nos. 1-5:

Shane Morris
QB, WARREN DE LA SALLE

Vitals: 6-3 1/2, 202.

Scouting: A lefty capable of throwing the ball 80 yards in the air. Last season, he completed 121 of 235 passes for 1,684 yards with 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His velocity can get the ball to a receiver in a tight spot. One of the top pro-style QBs in the nation. Committed to Michigan.

Steve Elmer
OT/DT, MIDLAND

Vitals: 6-6, 315.

Scouting: All-state dream team pick as junior. He ran 4.95 for 40 yards. He is an overpowering blocker. He combines amazing strength with the ability to move quickly for someone his size. Also plays defense. Committed to Notre Dame.

Jourdan Lewis
DB, DETROIT CASS TECH

Vitals: 5-11, 170.

Scouting: He had a breakout year defensively last season and proved to be an anchor in the secondary. He also is a dangerous receiver and kick returner. He had seven interceptions and caught 43 passes for more than 700 yards. Committed to Michigan.

Jon Reschke
LB, BIRMINGHAM BROTHER RICE

Vitals: 6-3, 235.

Scouting: A rare three-year starter, he was Rice's best defensive player on last season's state championship team, leading the Warriors with 140 tackles. He combines strength with quickness to play sideline-to-sideline. Committed to Michigan State.

Gerald Holmes
RB, FLINT CARMAN-AINSWORTH

Vitals: 6-1, 215.

Scouting: Injuries limited him to 363 yards on 70 carries with three touchdowns. He combines power and speed. He can run over people and has the ability to make them miss. He catches the ball out of the backfield and is a good pass blocker. Committed to Michigan State.

Midland cooks up a two-point conversion play to beat Canton

Four quarters and one play shy of an overtime had been completed, and Eric Methner had had enough. He drew up a two-point conversion play on the Midland sideline that would end the season-opening game one way or the other.

"Everybody thinks it's a gutsy call to do that, but our defense was worn out," Methner said. "They played an unbelievable game against that Canton offense. It only took them two quick plays to score in overtime. We weren't close to stopping them."

So Methner put the onus on the Canton defense to try to stop quarterback Alec Johnson, who took the snap from center and rolled right.

"They probably thought I was going to run, but there was good blocking -- Travis Patten got to the outside," Johnson said. "He was the lead blocker out there."

As Johnson strung out the play, Ryan Singer found an open spot in the defense.

"I ran an end-zone corner, those guys just went for the other guy," said Singer. "I just sat right down and was wide open. We made eye contact."

Johnson did throw the ball. He almost threw it too far.

"I thought I overthrew," Johnson said. "All of a sudden people started going nuts and we won it."

Midland pulled out a 29-28 victory Thursday in a game that means more to the Chemics than simply being 1-0.

"To come all this way and play strong," Johnson said, "it means a lot to our program to know we can compete with Canton."

Twenty years ago, it would have meant the world to Canton to be able to compete with Midland, but under Tim Baechler, Canton has established itself as one of the premier programs in the state.

"Canton's everything we knew they were going to be," said Methner. "I'm just really proud of our kids to come down and not only represent Midland High, but represent the Saginaw Valley League. We play good football up there."

So does Canton, which trailed, 21-7, after Patten returned the second-half kickoff 92 yards for a score. The Chiefs had only three second-half possessions, but they scored two touchdowns to tie the game with 3:22 left, and they had a chance to win it with 7 seconds remaining on a 34-yard field goal. But a low snap forced holder James Hall to throw a pass that Michael Wright intercepted.

"We do it 100 times a week," said Baechler. "They could do it 100 times perfect, but the snap rolled back. We ran our fire play and . . . what the hell, they're kids. They didn't do it on purpose."

Though the Chiefs are 0-1, they didn't play like a team that deserved to lose its opener.

"I hate the fact that we lost, but our kids showed us something tonight, and it's something to build on," said Baechler. "If we get healthy and learn and grow from this, this is going to really be beneficial for us down the line."

The last two players to leave the field were the biggest -- Midland's 6-foot-6, 315-pound tackle Steven Elmer, who committed to Notre Dame, and Canton's 6-4, 290 tackle Cameron Dillard, who committed to Florida.

"Against a team like Canton, you have to be prepared," said Elmer. "You know how good they are. Their offense is so good. We haven't played anyone like that in a long time. To come out and win it is absolutely huge. This is the most excited I've been after a game ever."

Dillard was less excited, but he was philosophical after battling Elmer.

"That's my boy, we're actually good friends," said Dillard. "I got a couple of pancakes out there. We did everything we could. There was nothing else we could do. We all make mistakes -- plays went our way, plays went their way."

Standing applause for the biggun'. As an EE, I believe, Steven may be called upon to be in the two-deep next year even if ZMart returns.

We found the real reason why we have been so dominant:

“@TJamesNDI: So the Irish are 20-3 since Steve Elmer became the first verbal commitment to the 2013 class.” It all makes sense now! Hahaha

Crazy how 247 gives him no love.

ESPN is even worse. 247 also really hates Montelus for no apparent reason. Consensus top 75ish recruit across the other services... barely a 4:s: on 247.

some of the reasons I am guessing are bowl alliances; analyst preferences have some bearing too; some of these kids will talk to 247 analysts first every time and never the Scout anallyst or rivals guy or vice versa - so he gets sandbagged a little by his regional analyst (that never gets the scoop) when the ranking meetings occur. Also - school prejudices come into play.
Last but not least - some of these guys, analysts, just arent very good at what they do but they carry a big stick

Sometimes if you tweet at them asking why they rank a guy so low, they will respond. I remember asking why Elmer dropped so low earlier in the year and one of them said it simply was because he wasn't participating in the circuits so they had little to go off of him.

ESPN gives Elmer no love?

"OL: Steve Elmer, 6-6, 305, Midland (Mich.)
Breakdown: This is one player that could easily start at the very beginning of his college career. Elmer moves extremely well for his size and completely dominated every rep he took."

4 star, 81 ratings. Sound like love to me.
