You win some and lose some.

With the season ND is having they will benefit from it this year.
I agree here. If we beat USC tonight it will definitely be a huge influence on some of the highly recruited kids. Winning does surely solve some of the recruiting issues. Overall net recruiting wise we should be much better off.

this kid is can easily be replaced. I'm not the least bit worried about recruiting tonight.

Per 247 all signs (and sources) are pointing to him heading elsewhere. Had a great visit to UCLA and you know, his uncle is kind of in town there. Washington obvioiusly also feels like they are strongly in the mix.

Good luck Danny. We'll probably fill his spot with someone as good or better. No worries.

Disappointing, but exciting to see how we'll fill the spot, assuming he does ditch us. Always liked Danny.

Does kinda suck because I know he was recruited to play outside LB but I had a feeling he was gonna be moved to TE. Wish you the best Danny whichever route you choose to go!

Yeah, don't know whether the rumor is true that the source of his discontent is that we want him at OLB and he wants to play TE, but if so, that's a real shame. Just look at Anthony Barr. He went to UCLA because they were going to try him at RB, whereas we wanted him at LB, and now he's playing LB anyway, and he's going to be drafted as an OLB. I wonder if he wishes he had just come to ND in the first place. We could be wondering the same thing if Mattingly ends up at LB later in his career.

One of the prospects that I was really looking forward to here at ND. With us having a great season I am sure we will fill the positions of need with top prospects.

Excellent. One more spot.

There is a time where I would've been incredibly sad to loose this kid... but then we added Randolph, he didn't want to play LB, and we went 12-0. If you're not all in at 12-0... well, there's not much to be said.

Is he gone or is this just speculation right now because he visited another school? I dont see how you decommit from a team in the NCG. Maybe he knows we getting some bigger LB prospects? Hows that for speculation ;)

Best of luck to the kid. Thats one more open scholarship available for another 5th year candidate or a better recruit.

I think the staff might be just as responsible for thisas Danny is. I think he kinda got pushed out... I believe that if Danny wanted to come to ND he probaly still could have (meaning the staff didnt pull his scholly) but I heard communication practically stopped between the staff and Danny. Oh well. Best of luck to him.

I heard this too. He may have sensed that after we got Randolph he was not as high a priority to the coaches.

At least it will happen now and not when he gets here and doesn't want to be. Good for us we get to pick up some more talented players.

Dang, never like to see a decommit but if he feels he can find a better fit elsewhere good luck to him!

Why don't we wait for him to actually decommit first?

Right, just so everyone is clear, he hasn't decommitted, but:
a) it looks like he will eventually, AND
b) even if he doesn't, he knows that we will drop him if someone we like better wants to commit; that's the deal if you take visits after committing to ND.

So in a way it's as if he has decommitted; we are still actively recruiting a number of top players, and if we could only take a minimum of two before Danny visited UCLA, we can now take a minimum of three (and say sayonara to Danny).

But if we only get two more commitments in the 2013 class, Danny can still sign an LOI to ND on signing day, at least as things stand now.

3-star LB Danny Mattingly visited UCLA this weekend. It is looking increasingly more likely that he will not end up at Notre Dame.

With visits, Mattingly's scholarship is no longer guaranteed. ND on-field success may allow them to fill slot with more highly rated player.

I harbor no ill will towards the kid. Gotta do what he feels is best. This will work out well for ND, I am sure of this much.

I have a feeling Trey Johnson or Deon Hollins will be replacing him. Just a feeling.

Agree with all of this. I think he could have been good here, especially with his versatility, but the likelihood is that his spot will be filled with a kid with more upside. Not an idea situation, but it beats getting left the altar on NSD.
