ACC, Orange Bowl finalize 12-year deal, sources say - ESPN

Anyone else not really excited about this? When you think about it, the likelihood that we'll ever actually play in the Orange Bowl isn't really strong. Think of it like this: If ND is unbeaten or has only 1 loss, they'll be in the playoff. So, we're talking about a 2 or 3 loss ND team to start. Then, we have to meet two criteria to qualify - 1) we have to be ranked higher than the 2nd highest SEC or B1G teams. 2) then, we also have to have not already played the ACC Champion during the regular season (we'll be playing 5 ACC games a year by then).

So I'm thinking its going to be quite a unique circumstance for all of those things to align, and more than likely, we won't play in that game very much. I hope Swarbrick is working on some stuff with the Fiesta or Cotton Bowls so we have a landing spot if we don't make the playoff.

Seems like a really bad deal for ND. I thought it was going to be set up where ND plays as the ACC team in the orange not against?

Yeah, not necessarily a good deal. Given scenarios where theres a 1 or 2 loss ND team that gets left out of the new playoff, theres a good chance that the 2nd highest SEC team would take the spot first because they may be ranked higher in most circumstances. An SEC team loses, they drop 4-8 places in the polls. ND loses they drop 8-12 spots in the polls.

I would be happy to see the Cotton Bowl get back to being considered in the major bowls. For years the 4 major Bowl's were the Rose, Orange, Sugar, & Cotton then the Fiesta came out of nowhere and bumped the Cotton bowl out. If memory serves, I seem to recall, Notre Dame turning down the Fiesta Bowl in the 70's because it was played on Christmas day. But that's been 30 plus years ago so I could be wrong.

Hopefully, we can work something out. After all we played in one of the games that helped really solidify the Fiesta as a major bowl. the 87 PSU vs. Miami NC's game and ND vs. WVU NC game 89.

Orange Bowl deal: at least 3 guaranteed appearances over 12 years by both B1G & SEC & maximum of 2 by Notre Dame

The Fiesta Bowl seems pretty wide open now that the Big 12 abandoned it. Seems like there could be mutual benefit if they worked something out with ND

Pretty "meh" sort of deal. Great for B1G and SEC. Seems like only once in a blue moon ND will play in Orange.

The Orange Bowl sucks. Crappy stadium in a crappy part of town. Someome let the Orange Bowl lose its luster.

It already has... It was arguably on par with the Rose Bowl pre BCS... Now it's easily the lesser of the BCS bowls...

Yeah ACamp, thats what I meant. Poor spelling and sentence structure didn't convey my thoughts clearly.

Only a max of two times in 12 years? Shafted. We need access to another BCS bowl or we are hosed.

Reading this Orange Bowl agreement, this is an all-time low for ND in access to the system.

The other BCS bowls will be for the playoffs, won't they? Two semis and then the championship game.

I haven't been following the bowl stuff too much because it's still two years out.

6 "access" bowls. Two will be the playoff games and the other four will be like the BCS bowls are today. The only tie in we have right now is the Orange. Obviously in years where the Orange hosts a playoff the normal contracted agreements will rotate to the other bowls.

The Championship game will be a separate thing, like the BCS title game is today. The two semifinal games will rotate between 6 bowls (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Chick Fillet and Cotton).

I really hope Swarbrick is pushing for better access with the Fiesta.

We could also use some better mid tier bowl connections.

We don't want to play in the Orange Bowl anyway. If ND performs well enough to be eligible for a BCS bowl, we'll be selected.

All this means is we can go to the Orange twice every twelve years right?? How many times has ND made that game in the last twenty?? Once? I most be missing something.

Currently we can finish in the top 8 and automatically qualify for a BCS bowl. In the future we can only be selected by the Orange Bowl and only twice in 12 years. We could in theory finish every season 5th in the country and only go to two BCS games.

Basically if we don't finish top 4 we are screwed.

I haven't seen anything that would even suggest this locks us into an exclusive thing with the Orange.

Perhaps, this is wishful thinking on my part but 6 bowls and a NC bowl. This could be used to extend thing in the future to take the top 8 teams 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5, = 4 bowls, that leaves 4 winners left for two more Bowl games 2 winners left for the NC game. Works for me. I know, I know but I can dream can't I?

To the best of my knowledge Notre Dame has made the biggest jump in the polls after the bowl games. We went from 5th to 1st when we beat the #1 ranked Texas Longhorns led by Earl Campbell in the Cotton Bowl. I have always had mixed emotions about a NC 1v2, simply because everyone else is frozen out. Jan 1st 1978 we had some breaks go our way and we ended up as National Champions. We jumped Alabama by virtue of playing a stronger opponent and beating the crap out of Texas 38-10. I was a teenager and I was watching all those bowl games pulling for this team to beat that team and so on. It worked out. I miss those days because more teams had a shot till the very end.

I miss those days too... becasue they were exciting and made the whole season exciting... don't agree on an 8 team or larger though, I would find that it would make the reg. season a snoozer
