I don't think it was a bad call. It appeared that the outfielder called off the infielder who was in clear control of the play. He stopped and the play looked worse than it really was. IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT THE BALL WAS OUTSIDE OF THE INFIELD....

An INFIELD FLY is a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before two are out. The pitcher, catcher and any outfielder who stations himself in the infield on the play shall be considered infielders for the purpose of this rule.
When it seems apparent that a batted ball will be an Infield Fly, the umpire shall immediately declare "Infield Fly'' for the benefit of the runners. If the ball is near the baselines, the umpire shall declare "Infield Fly, if Fair.''
The ball is alive and runners may advance at the risk of the ball being caught, or retouch and advance after the ball is touched, the same as on any fly ball. If the hit becomes a foul ball, it is treated the same as any foul.
If a declared Infield Fly is allowed to fall untouched to the ground, and bounces foul before passing first or third base, it is a foul ball. If a declared Infield Fly falls untouched to the ground outside the baseline, and bounces fair before passing first or third base, it is an Infield Fly.
Rule 2.00 (Infield Fly) Comment: On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder - not by some arbitrary limitation such as the grass, or the base lines. The umpire must rule also that a ball is an infield fly, even if handled by an outfielder, if, in the umpire's judgment, the ball could have been as easily handled by an infielder. The infield fly is in no sense to be considered an appeal play. The umpire's judgment must govern, and the decision should be made immediately.
When an infield fly rule is called, runners may advance at their own risk. If on an infield fly rule, the infielder intentionally drops a fair ball, the ball remains in play despite the provisions of Rule 6.05(l). The infield fly rule takes precedence.

There are two issues:

1. He called it very late... very, very late.
2. Defining ordinary effort when the infielder was still drifting out to left field... it wasn't like he was camped under the ball and then mishandled it. He was 5 or 6 feet away from the ball when it dropped.

I umpire a lot of baseball all the way up to the college level and I agree that it wasn't a terrible call as a lot of you are throwing out there. As soon as the SS camped under the ball the ump called infield fly. This was not a situation where the SS did anything but track the ball and then camp under it. The rule is in place to protect the runners, more specifically to protect the runners from an unfair advantage gained by a fly ball in relative proximity to bases in which those runners would have to advance to.

No way you Can consider that a routine play. He was almost 90 feet off the infield. still back pedaling. It was a bad call but not what cost the braves that game.

Just got home from watching my Reds complete one of the worst historic baseball collapses of all time. I am in utter shock.
If Dusty is still the manager next season they will not have my support.

I am in hell right now. That was an absolutely brutal 7 hours of my life. The Nationals could not have done more to lose that game. JUST THROW THE ****ING BALL OVER THE PLATE AND MAKE THEM SWING! Tons of managerial errors to set the stage for that epic 9th inning collapse... such as going with Edwin Jackson out of the bullpen instead of an actual reliever, using Burnett for only one batter, etc.

And the O's got their asses handed to them by the Yankees. At least they got beat by a better team though. This odd penchant St. Louis has for playing completely average baseball for 162 games and then grabbing the last wildcard spot where they proceed to win every single "must win" game is crazy. Absolutely epic and crazy. Tonight they were down to their last strike TWICE and managed to draw walks.

I'm just waiting for ND to lose tomorrow on a blown call or a stupid turnover to complete this trifecta of suckitude.

AND I RAN OUT OF BEER HALFWAY THROUGH THE GAME!

Another boring baseball playoffs is ahead. College basketball and the NFL have the only consistently good postseasons.

You can't make this stuff up.

Cards send their co-ace Adam Wainwright out to get the win, he gives up 6 runs and doesn't make it out of the 3rd inning.
0-6
Cards are leaving opportunities all of over the place. 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position before the 9th inning.
0-6
Cards claw back in thanks to Carlos Beltran and a bases loaded walk to Craig in the 5th but don't capitalize for more.
3-6
Cards get one run out of a two on second and third with no out situation. ho-hum
4-6
'The master of the K' Clippard comes in looking for more stats instead of a win and gives up a homer to Daniel 'I play second base and hit 7th' Descalso.
5-6
Cards send their closer to the mound to keep it a one run game....so of course he gives up a single to Suzuki with a runner on third.
5-7
CARLOS BELTRAN LOVES THE POSTSEASON!-Hits a double to start the ninth. Holiday moves him to 3rd with a dinker of a hit that is comical for how strong the guy is. Craig swings at every piece of junk that Storen was throwing to the outside corner and strikes out. 2 outs, 1 runner on third Nats fans are getting their NLCS tickets on their smart phones.......it all came crumbling down!

Full count to Molina....walk. Full count to Freese....walk. First pitch to that Discalso guy again and rocket off the the shortstops glove! "What just happened?"-everyone in DC
game tied 7-7!

"Ok no biggie" says the Nats-they have Werth, Harper, and Zimmerman up at the bottom of the inning..........SMACKKKKKK the wizard of Koz hits a liner to right to take the lead freaking 9 to 7!

Motte says he has been here before 1-2-3. Game over. What in the wide world of sports. WOOOOOO

It must be boring when your watching Tampa Bay play in the postseason errr offseason.....wait why are you watching the Rays while their watching from their couches????

If you can't get excited about the game after watching that comeback then please do me a favor and do a check-up with your doctor cause you don't have a pulse.

I don't think this is a bad move. The Marlins won 2 championships in the last 15 years operating with this MO.

When you look at the Marlins they SUCKED with a heavy payroll... now they will suck with a light payroll and maybe be able to rebuild. The team as presently configured was going absolutely nowhere in a division with the Nationals, Braves, and Phillies who are all soundly better teams at 100%.

The only part that is stinky is that they just fleeced the taxpayers for 70% of a new stadium and then said "f*ck it, check back with us in 2-4 years and we might be competitive, but that experiment wasn't working."

Hate when teams do this, but it is a little different this time because the Marlins sucked with them.

Thats the only reason why people are up in arms over this.
