Whiskey do you think they would take Redfield and Alexander if they both wanted to commit prior to either Robinson or Treadwell? I think they would have to say yes to both (I'd probably pass on Willis if Red or Al already in the bag).

Would we? Probably, simply because they're both elite recruits and it'd be very hard to turn either down. The likelihood of that happening is minuscule though, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Alexander's recruitment will probably go down to the wire, and I just don't see us having room at that point.

But then you could end up with both Redfield and Alexander. I wouldn't like to take 5 DBs in this class when we have other needs. I'd keep Whiskey's list the way it is.

The other needs IMO are K, and DL. None of which are on the board. We are good at WR IMO, so if we are going to have an imballance, I'd rather it be in the DB space. DBs are the heart and soul of special teams, and we need help there. Talking WRs, LT is a pipe dream IMO, and DR did say on 247 that while impressed with ND, he is still "strongly committed" to Clemson. IDK, honestly I'd take any that want to commit now, just would prefer 2 stud DBs that might be able to compete right away.

where are our other needs with this class??

i'm assuming like he said we already take aqm....we don't NEED another receiver imo

While I see this argument and basically agree (wish we had more room overall but this is a big class anyway)...it seems with the attention paid to DR by CBK after the Pitt game suggests he probably would like to go there.

Yeah, I think I agree with Whiskey that if Mack and Redfield both wanted to commit tomorrow, we'd have to take both because they are both such studs.

But I disagree that we don't need a WR. I would like to get a big, physical, playmaking WR like Treadwell or Robinson. We don't have anybody quite like that, at least not at their talent grade.

So I guess I'll say that I think Whiskey's list, which was:
-- AQM,
-- first of Redfield, Mack, Willis
-- first of D. Robinson, Treadwell
is the way I would like to see it go down ... but I could definitely see it going down differently depending on timing of commitments.

But will ND take Refield and Mack if we don't get a WR at all? I say hell yes.

Yeah, isn't that what Whiskey was saying? If Redfield and Mack both want to commit tomorrow, we would probably take both, and then there would be no room for D. Robinson or Treadwell.

But all this is probably academic; unlikely to happen.

Everybody is making good points today but I would have to agree with you on this. The ST's help to go along with star power in the back end is more concerning to me. Then next year your are looking at 5 guys that have ND very high on their list of schools in Smith, Malik McDowell, Hayes, Trumbetti(do want!), and Williams! We will fill our needs on the D-line! You gotta take at the position that luck hasn't been on our side. We are fielding an SEC defense but lacking the depth in the secondary, fix that and this D will be absolutely dominant!

So it appears everyone is assuming we aren't pursuing Folston anymore?

I would add him into group three of Whiskey's list.

Personally, he would seem more likely than Treadwell. He has came on an official at least.

If Nichols is taking a medical:
  • AQM is a given (silent);
  • First to commit of Redfield, Alexander or Willis;
  • First to commit of Robinson or Treadwell.

Though the rumors surrounding Willis are something to consider. It's possible that ours is one of the many coaching staffs to have allegedly backed off him.
imo willis was a USC lock but after the USC-Oregon game is that still the case?

i like your list, the only thing is what about Folston? the coaching staff really likes him, would they let him go infavor or another WR?

Oooh, good call ... I wasn't assuming that we aren't pursuing him any more; just forgot about Folston for the moment.

He's a very different player than D. Rob and Treadwell, but I think he goes in group three, the "playmaker" category, as Sapp (and apparently the staff) call it.

It's tough getting a read on what the staff is doing. They seem to be going hard after so many guys, and there are so few spots ...

I guess that's what you have to do. Plant a lot of seeds and see what comes out.

Annoying that we aren't going after a dt or ng type

Who do you want us to go after? There isn't anyone left who we have a shot with, from what I see.

I was thinking about this recently.

I wonder if ND continues to win, perhaps more kids become interested, and maybe a DL currently committed to another school may want to check the Irish out a bit more.

I think it could happen, particularly with the way the defense and DL have played this year.

Of course this is assuming there are guys out there the staff would like as well-- a mutual interest.

End of season is poaching season. Coaching changes, poor seasons, we def. could find ourselves talking to a few new names so to speak.

Would love to smash USC and poach DT Bigelow. Some of the best DTs are still free. Not sure why we haven't gone after a few. I'm sure there are reasons, just don't know them.

Were there any/many good DT/NG types we were seriously in on who went elsewhere? It never seemed like a big priority for this cycle and beyond Rochell I don't remember a lot of names.
That said, I could definitely see kids looking at Nix & Tuitt and thinking they'd like to board this train.

I'm not sure Bigelow has an offer. Eddie Vanderdoes seems more likely than Kenny to get a phone call. He's already being openly poached by UCLA, so maybe there's a chance he's not solid to USC...

I'd wouldn't kick EV off the bus for eating crackers, that's for sure, but wondering why we didn't take a shot at a MD kid from a Christian school.

Sometimes we do reach out and kids just have no interest, so we don't bother extending an offer. If they have no interest in talking to you from the beginning, then there's just nothing you can do and no point wasting time. I seem to remember BK saying something along those lines once. So I'd be willing to bet that we contacted Bigelow and tried to gauge his interest and moved on when it became clear he had none. But I don't know anything about his recruitment; just a guess.

I get the no-interest thing. Just seems there was a lack of buzz when it came to DTs this year. With this D, and with the success of some of our recruiters in several big time areas, just seems strange.

I totally agree. I've been thinking the same thing.

It's clear that the staff is making DT is a priority in the 2014 class, so I assume it's all a part of the plan though.

Folston's omission in my previous post was an oversight. I went back and added him in with Treadwell and Robinson, though it's very possible that the staff would make him wait until we got definite answers from some bigger fish.

And you guys beat me to the punch on the DT issue. As much as I'd love to land Redfield, Robinson, etc., Montravius Adams, Kenny Bigelow, or Eddie Vanderdoes would be far more important to this class. They're the 3 top-rated DTs by 247's Composite ranking, and 2/3 are currently committed to USC.

Poaching one of them would be a huge recruiting coup.
