Interesting ... Sapp has said that our coaches are telling committed recruits that they consider an official visit to another school to be a decommitment. Doesn't mean you lose your offer, but it does mean that the staff won't guarantee your spot come NSD.

If Mattingly is planning to take officials, things could get ugly. Danny is a great athlete and an exciting prospect, but we have other interested prospects that want his spot. If Danny messes around, he could be out and Hooper or Egu or even Deon Hollins could be in.

EDIT: I wonder if that's why he was so mad about the Twitter rumor ... maybe he senses that he is on a short leash with the staff.

Perhaps, but there is no way the staff wouldn't find out anyways.

It sounds like the previous staffs take on recruiting: if your looking we're looking.

I said this last year in the kid's thread who ended up at the Univ. of Houston. If the kid is taking other visits, then he is not committed. No, I am not saying that Mattingly is not going to end up at ND, but what I am saying is I do not consider him a commitment to ND and would not hold a spot for him. I used the analogy about if you were engaged to marry someone would you go on dates before your wedding "to test the waters."

I was lucky enough to play sports in college as were several other family members at some very major programs. I have seen the very good and the very ugly in recruiting and although some of the playing days date back to the 80's truthfully other than outsiders via the internet, etc. knowing what is going on not a lot has changed. I am all for a player taking every allowable visit, but if you plan on doing this I would advise that you do not make a commitment before doing so. Under no circumstances would I hold a spot for a player who is doing this because more times than not the coach and the University will be caught with their pants down in the end (just ask Ol' Charlie about that).

Just watched that interview for the first time. At the end he says I'm commited but still taking visits. IMO it was pretty obvious that was an uncomfortable question for him to answer.

So he says the rumors suck because they are a distraction from his team and doesn't want to be distracted during the season.

Visiting other schools is not a distraction I guess.

I don't get it. Notre Dame is 7-0, and guys are still looking around?

This. But at the same time, I think we should just relish the 7-0. The rest will take care of itself. I do see what you're saying - these guys saw that the program was trending up when they committed, but once it jumps much higher than expected this year they think about bailing?

I have heard from some people that we (the staff) have seriously cut down on contact with Danny. So lets not jump down Danny's throat for looking at other schools if that is the case... We dont know what's going on.

Theres a couple things that those schools are pushing...distance and then his girlfriend would be closer too.

I hate to say but based off what ISD said you could see BK do a Hoke and yank the scholly but kid def needs to talk to BK/recruiter so they are all on the samepage

Wouldn't shock me. I think a decent number of "decommitments" aren't the recruit's choice.

Don't have a problem with BK pulling anyone's offer. He knows what he's doing and has shown he can recruit. I think he'd be quicker on the draw given what happened last season.

I am assuming that you mean this, but I just want to clarify...
Only time BK should be pulling schollies is when the recruit is flirting with other schools and has a foot out the door

With spots still open in the class, that's all he can do, right? He doesn't have to pull an offer to recruit over someone. They get to make their own choices at that point. Once they make a move in that direction, the staff can just duck out. That's how I broke up with all my high school girlfriends: didnt say anything, just stopped talking to them and started talking to another one, and let them make the call. Lot easier that way.

Justin Hopkins is reporting that he'll visit Oregon for the Stanford game.

Just confirming what we already know ... he's looking around. Curious how the staff will react.

My hope is that we get a few verbals in the next month and put pressure on these kids to decide. Mattingly and Anzalone in particular.

Have a feeling this kid is getting a big head being a big fish in a not very good pond (pacific NW football as a whole) and these school up here are getting in his ear about how great he'll be.

Correct, going to a school in the summer is much less significant than going on an OV. I agree with that statement thats why this is concerning. I don't hate on these kids for their decision, what I can't stand is these kids that string us along. He should do whats best for him, I just hope that doesn't mean we get left holding the bag.

And then again who knows maybe the staff has said something to him that turned him off like (AQM is our number one choice for your spot and at the chance he doesn't commit in the end you'll be in). Complete speculation and most likely not true but there could be something on the other side.

He will decommitt because Oregon doesn't let committed players visit.

Or......He is feeling slightly insecure about committing early on to his childhood favorite without visiting some other programs closer to home. This is a life choice, and he wants to be sure that the school he rooted for growing up is the best for his future, and not just a choice from the heart.

Sounds reasonable to me as long as he is open and honest with the staff about his thoughts / intentions.

Nor is our staff letting players committed to ND take OVs elsewhere (assuming this is an OV ... it could be unofficial).
