It might not be what ppl want to hear, but I think with Alex jumping ship the staff will like keep an additional 5th year backer (fox or Carlo) and then go after MLB next year. Not able to get a goo MLB in this class why waste a scholly on one when you can bring a capable MLB and look to the future.

I was thinking this today. Could help us with Nyles Morgan?

If Alex and Danny decommit I think we take one additional commit and keep both Fox and Carlo. If only one does I think we just take the additional commit.

I think we go all in on Clifton Garrett. Plus there will be tons of guys that pop up over the summer.

I think that USC part is him trying to insinuate that its Redfield. With that being said I think that AQm very could be as well. I almost feel like the staff knows there are not as many spots as we think there are.

Also we are currently recruiting Juwaan williams as a slot receiver but a lot of schools including oregon (which are in his top two) see him as a cornerback/safety. He is obviously one that is in the wait and see category. Point of the post is he very well could end up on defense should we miss on others.

If we closed this class with Redfield + AQM + anyone (Folston, a CB, etc.) that would be absolutely baller.

Yeah, when I first was reading the article, I was thinking AM, but then the USC thing made me think Redfield. I'd be thrilled about either, but even more so with both. I do think it might be odd if Max is a silent to ND, but is out there, publicly, as a USC verbal. And on top of that, Damefan made it seem like the kid wanted to announce during an all star game, on television. Which is fine, but would be kinda weird to make an announcement to USC- which he already has done, or to ND, as he's a USC verbal. I guess if/when Redfield decommits, then it should only be a matter of time.

Also got to thinking about the LB corps, sans AA. JS, DR, MD are all still on board as LB's. Danny Football is still on board as well. If he does ultimately choose ND, we know he could play several of the LB positions (as well as TE). Suppose AM chooses ND (which is not a given, but definitely pretty decent odds), then I'm not really worried too much about losing AA. I'd rather have Alex than not have him, but having Deeb means 1 for sure MLB, and a possibility of Randolph or Mattingly, and still another guy in the next cycle. The staff is still making sure their LB numbers and depth are being addressed in this cycle.

Could Mattingly really play ILB? I doubt it. Not much overlap in the physical profiles and skill sets. TE and OLB? Yes. But not ILB.

We're dangerously thin inside. Even if we bring back both Calabrese and Fox, we'd only have 6/8 with Anzalone for 2013. Without him, we're at 5/8*. DT and ILB are our only two real positions of need; losing one of our most highly rated prospects at either position stings.

Now, if we back fill with Isaac Savaiinaea, I won't give Anzalone another thought. But there's no way to spin this as anything other than a significant loss.

*At this point, bringing back both Calabrese and Fox is an absolute necessity. And Rabasa probably has to move back inside as well.

I've never really thought Danny Football could play ILB...but others have said it on here. So I'm kind of with you on that. I do, however, think Randolph could play inside. Honestly, if it's AA, Deeb, or whomever, I think the chance of him getting on the field is slim to none in '13 anyway. There's Grace, Moore, Schmidt, probably one of Fox/Calabrese, and then Deeb as well. That guy (whether it's AA, IS, Mattingly, or Randolph) is providing depth, for intents and purposes. Say it's Randolph (for argument sake), if the coaches like him there, but don't love him there, they could move him to Dog or Cat or wherever they think he may have more of an impact in '14. And then bring in another 1 or 2 ILB's for depth and development in the '14 cycle.

Am I being a little over-simplistic in my views? Perhaps. But I look at the roster and see a basically starting TE who was a contributing freshman OLB last year, a starting safety who was a freshman WR for depth purposes only and no chance of playing there last year, a back up RB who was...well, a back up freshman RB last year...but a CB in the spring, but who Kelly said he wouldn't have a problem utilizing at either position, and a starting CB who hadn't played it (or anything else at the college level) until 3 weeks before the season began. I guess this was what I was getting at in my OP above-- with the LB corps the way it currently stands (subtracting AA, of course), and especially with landing AM, I'm not that worried about depth. I think the staff can and will handle the depth and development with these guys .

seriously. Buzz, buzz

Haha, all I'm saying is I hope he's right! That would be amazing! Hope Folston enjoys himself today but the likely hood of him popping this weekend has to be low as he is just starting to make visits.

Jesus thank you whiskey ... I have been saying this for weeks. We must get at least two true ILBs in this class ... Thick powerful guys with quick feet, as opposed to long, lean, speedy guys like Mattingly and Randolph.

They don't have to be top guys ... We can swing for the fences at ILB in 2014. But we need two for depth.
