Lobos football is an exercise in apathy. A few years ago, I was in Albuquerque, and people were giving the tickets away as if they were no more valuable than expired grocery coupons. So my wife and I shrug and take two tickets. I drive toward the stadium, and there is no traffic. I drive into the parking lot and i have my choice of thousands of empty parking spaces. We walk toward the stadium, feeling very alone. We go inside and there are open seats everywhere. Sit wherever you wish because no one cares. It's hard to figure what might be called success in a program like that. So I pick Kansas to have a better year, though I'm pulling for Davies.

Sad story...

I think Davie comes out on top in the W-L column

That is when Locksley was there ...the guy single handy tried to kill the program.

I think the Rice lost is worse. The UNM/Tex game was competitive until the 3rd, and that was 1 and 2 star players against the UT 5 star team.

I certainly hope it's CW.....bob daviewas the beginning of this 20+ year mess. The only good thing about him being back in coaching is I don't have to see his sorry behind on ESPN anymore.
He's the idiot that fired Joe Moore. He's a two faced , three cornered, rat tail, lying, excuse making (*&%^^$!

Charlie, me boy, I don't know the situation details which would make you do such a thing, but I am having trouble imagining ANY scenario where a head coach would do something as extreme as this to his seniors [three of whom are even guys you recruited for gawd's sake].

I don't like to be judgmental, but this is the most non-collegiate bent-out-of-shape "pro-type" thought I believe I've seen in college coaching. What are ANY players that you have going to think about your loyalty to them??

I remember reading somewhere about the KU student paper bashing the football team but didn't know where. Thought I would put this here as we were discussing Weis's coaching tactics of letting his seniors go.

Anyways for those who don't know. A student writer bashed the football team in the paper the week of the KU/KSU game and Charlie seemed to take the high road saying something on twitter about hoping the students support their team and he could care less.

Turns out he did care.

Charlie Weis Had Underling Intimidate Critical Kansas Student Reporter [UPDATE] | The Big Lead

Charlie Weis’ tinpot dictatorship continues to create headlines. Last week an article in KU’s Daily Kansan miffed the notable coach. This week he retaliated. The author of the article, Blake Schuster, was not banned from Weis’ press conference, but he was pulled aside by Kansas’ director of football communications and warned there might be “a change of tone” should he decide to ask a question. No other reporters were similarly warned. Schuster opted not to ask a question.

Schuster saw it is an attempt to silence him. The director of football communications, Katy Lonergan described the altercation as follows.

Charlie Weis Had Underling Intimidate Critical Kansas Student Reporter [UPDATE] | The Big Lead

Was this really about intimidation or a heads up? Did a young writer scream Freedom of the Press while lacking the balls to ask a question after being "counseled"?

Sounds like the Director of Communications gave sage advice, along the lines of "when you attack someone, some of them bite back" or "when you run with the big dogs be prepared for some barking". Instead of showing judgement and perhaps guile, Schuster wimperd off in silence like a puppy and got some friends to write about it instead.

All he had to do was stand up and ask a harmless question in a non-baiting fashion. If Weis grumbled and growled, pulled a Dantonio or John L., he would have looked poor. Instead Schuster and Company resort to innuendo.

This is in no way a defense of Weis but rather a comment about the media, young or old. Wieneke and his SBT buddy were punks for sandbagging a young player about an highly touted recruit for the sole purpose of fomenting controversy. It was as unethical as Connie Chung's infamous question to Gingrich's 68 year old mother. Said Chung:

Why don't you just whisper it to me, just between you and me.

while the cameras rolled and millions saw this old lady share a confidence she expected would be treated in confidence not shown to millions of 60 Minutes viewers to embarass and eviscerate.

Said Chung "in her defense" after the feces hit the fan:

Yes, I tricked her, but consider my perilous position. Network news is a vicious jungle, and I had to bite and claw to get where I'm at and I want to stay there. We live by the ratings, and people aren't going to tune in to be bored by some old doll bragging about what a smart lad her Newtie is and how he always flossed. Not when they can get something cheap and flashy just by clicking their zapper. So if I can get something cheap and flashy out of an interview with Newtie's proud mom, can you blame me?

Weis isn't a 68 year old mother unfamiliar with the spotlight and the media's lack of ethics. Nonetheless Schuster like Wieneke got his cheap and flashy moment.

If I read the article correctly, this guy died at 22 which would have made him 7-12 years old during Davie's ND years. ???

i think he did it as a joke. when i was 10 to 13 i'd read the sports page every day

So did I but even a 10 year old should have been able to see Bob in in over his head.

Most 10 year olds draw up better plays in the dirt than Bob Davie's offense ran.

Bob's clock management could not have been worse if he had a 10 year old calling it. ND plays major college football against prime time competitors. It's not a place for On The Job Training of an Apprentice Head Coach. Ask Charlie.

Lobos beat Hawaii...Bob Davie is 4 and 3.

Steele called for Davie in '12 to win more games than New Mexico won in '09, '10, and '11 combined. He did it in only 7 games.

NM should lose to AFA, Fresno, and Nev but beat UNLV, WYO, and CSU. If so they go bowling.

Kansas, 1-5, faces OU, UTX, BU, TT, ISU, and WVU. Things looked better in Lawrence when Cantrell was riding into town. KU hasn't had a 1 win season since '88.

The one '12 win is over 1aa South Dakota St.

What Davie is doing with UNM is simply incredible. Hard to describe how far down that program had fallen. NM deserves some decent footbaw.

Davie is doing 100x better than Weis. New Mexico has more wins this year than 2009, 2010, and 2011 combined!

Bob has 5 games left. I think he'll be favored in 3 of those games with losses to Nevada and Fresno State. New Mexico has a very good chance to go to a bowl game this year. Charlie has a good chance to be eating from a bowl watching the games from home.

On raw wins alone yes but if you look at who they've played to date ...

Sagarin has KU ranked 88th with the 18th toughest schedule (ND's is #17).

NM is ranked 112th with the 96th toughest schedule.

KU's average opponent would be OSU (8-0) and SU (5-2).

NM's average opponent would be Northern Iowa (1-5) and Wyoming (1-5).

For ND fans, Oregon's schedule is ranked 93rd toughest about 0.5 points tougher than NM's. ND's average opponents are in the OSU and SU class while Oregon's are the Northern Iowas and Wyomings.

This is all true, but strength of schedule aside and just going off performance last year with each school's previous coaches, Charlie hasn't seemed to make any improvements seen to the naked eye. On the flip side Davie is pulling out some wins with a slightly improved defense and respectable running game it looks like.
