I have to admit, I wish there was a one year overlap between Manti and Jaylon. Just enough time for Jaylon to pick up some of Manti's leadership traits. Not saying Jaylon isn't a good leader, just saying Manti is the best person alive.

is it crazy for me to think that he could maybe step into manti's spot next year?? i know he's a natural at one of the outside spots, but seeing how lethal having an eliteathlete in the middle is this year really makes me wonder how good this guy could be in the middle with his ability in space playing sideline to sideline. plus he would be a lot more involved in the middle on every play than at the DOG spot. just me thinking out loud a little

Yes, sorry man but that is crazy. Jaylon is too slight right now to probably even play DOG the way the staff would want, let alone MIKE or WILL. They only flaw I see in his game right now (besides lack of experience) is his lack of strength, and time with Longo will help him greatly. He is an unbelievable talent, but he would be manhandled inside next year if put there.

Jaylon will absolutely be on the field next year, but to me there is no way at all will he be starting inside (nor should he). His most impressive talents are his pass rushing and coverage abilities. I wouldn't mitigate those by sticking him inside taking on O-lineman and TEs.

I'm with Ironman on this. I actually think that having him inside is wasting his skill set. We need him outside doing his thing in coverage and outside rush/contain. He will make plays wherever he plays, but I don't see the point of sticking a round peg in a square hole.

I honestly believe he could play in our outside rotation today. That's not a knock on our outside LBs, it's a credit to the kind of freak athleticism Jaylon possesses. I think he will be involved no matter where he plays.

ok, I get that this is even more crazy than the post above but the thought has crossed my mind a couple of times while watching his film that Smith would be an incredible asset at corner. I know it sounds ridiculous and I'll take the laughter and mockery that this suggestion might provoke, but I think he would be a ridiculous corner or nickel in ND's scheme. I don't think height is valued enough for cornerbacks in general in either college or the pros, and I believe Jaylon's combination of height, speed, and cover skills would be invaluable in the secondary. Again, I know it sounds absurd but I've convinced myself that it's plausible. And if the next 15 posts tell me how stupid I am I'll make sure to keep these 'outside the box' thoughts to myself next time...

I can see both sides of the argument... Jaylon is such a freak athletically that he could EXCEL at multiple positions at a DI level (OLB, ILB, Safety, RB, maybe even CB).

He is obviously a perfect fit for DOG: elite for a LB in coverage, quick enough to make plays anywhere on the field against the run/pass, and also able to get after the QB in certain situations.

However, if he were to bulk up after his first year, I could see him on the inside as well. If you have a guy with elite speed and coverage for a LB, why not put him in the middle and let him range sideline-to-sideline on run downs, blowing everything up, and protect the middle with his elite coverage skills on passing downs?

For the record, I see him at DOG no questions, but if Diaco wants him commanding the middle for some reason, he wouldn't be wasted by any means.

I was on the "Manti will stay" boat and it happened. Because you look at their personality. He gave me the feeling that he would stay all four years when he committed. He said he wanted to make an impact at ND. Staying until you are good enough to leave isn't making an impact. Staying when you could have been a 1st rounder is making an impact because you essentially have a starting NFL player on your team.

Looking at Tuitt's personality I see no difference from Manti. Tuitt and his mother value the degree from ND. They understand it. Tuitt wants to get better obviously. I'm jumping on the boat already that Tuitt will be a senior at ND.
