I think it was a good block except he led with the crown of his helmet, thus the fine. He should call up Hines, get some pointers.

He lead with his shoulder, his helmet on the follow through hit Lee's facemask. If you do not have your head on a swivel on the football field, you will get lit up. Sorry, Golden Tate is not the first person to blindside a defensive player and he won't be the last. So that hit with Cierre Wood against Purdue last year is terrible too. Sorry a lot of other people would disagree with you.

I disagree about the shoulder leading and a lot of people disagree with you. You can stop the Youtube video and clearly see the crown of his helmet hitting into Lee's chest, then sliding up into his chin.

I do agree about the head on a swivel though.

What's funny about this is that Lee's man in pass coverage on this play was actually Golden. Sucks to get beat twice by the same guy on the same play.

I'm certain a fine will be assessed.

vBet?

I say no for a vMil.

Perfectly clean block.

Imagine when Sean Lee was lying on the turf, rather than seeing stars circling his head he probably saw ND players (for those that recall, Ace Schwapp absolutely OBLITERATED Sean Lee during the 2007 PSU game - same kind of hit, but coming from a much more powerful guy. Wish I could find it on youtube so that it could be posted)

Block looked fine to me. He lead with his shoulder. Probably wouldnt have been that bad of a hit if the Dallas player kept his head on a swivel instead of having tunnel vision.

Sean Lee is officially a bitch. Take it like a man, the hit was completely legal.

Pay the piper.

The head shoulder thing is very close but it is impossible for lowering the shoulder without also lowering the head as well. Tate said he lead with his shoulder and had no intent of injuring and I will take his word for it.

Love Tate but of course that was a cheap and illegal shot. A few years ago the nfl passed a rule that is known as the Hines Ward rule. It is to protect defenseless defensive players. Basically, you cant sucker pumch guys, which is what that was. And i agree that the crown of his belmet is what made it even worse.

What was also bad was his demeanor after the hit, Lee was on his back and feared unconscious by his teammates. Tate is jumping up and down, whooping it up and making an *** out of himself. Fortunately Lee, who is a fine player and young man, was ok.

This is exactly why he was fined. 80% Sean Lee's fault though for not having his head on a swivel. The hit itself was right in his chest and shoulder before head. Definitely illegal though by the "don't destroy players who aren't looking" rule.

It's ridiculous because Lee was covering Tate across the field. Instead of realizing where the offensive player (turned blocker) had gone, he was zeroing in on Wilson.

If totally not paying attention makes you unable to be blocked, why don't all defensive players just run with their heads sideways so every block on them is a personal foul?

I'm pretty sure the rule was designed so that blockers can't swing around from the back/side and blindside defenders. That's not what happened here. Tate came across the FRONT of Lee's face, and Lee decided to continue his pursuit of the ball carrier rather than look out for potential blockers.

If the hit didn't look so damn violent, and Tate didn't do a bear crawl away from the (very disrespectful, but you've gotta love Golden)... there's probably not a fine here, let alone a $21,000 whopper.

He lowered his head right before impact and nailed him with the crown of his helmet in the throat.

Doesn't matter what his intentions were nor whether the guy was looking he lowered his hat and used it as weapon.

Hell of a hit. Now pay the man.

Don't see how anybody can look at this and say it's a clean block. Definitely lowered his head and lead with his helmet. Originally I thought it was clean until I saw it in slow motion on a gif. Definitely a cheap shot. Pretty much the only way Tate is going to get on Sportscenter though.

This is the biggest conundrum out there in the NFL right now. How you can lead with your shoulder without also lowering your head? It seems it is borderline impossible to hit without breaking some rule. Golden Tate did his absolute best to NOT hit him helmet-to-helmet... targeted the middle of his chest.... hit him first with his hands... still gets fined for cleaning his clock. Because they player was "defenseless." It's a rule because Hines Ward used to cheap shot people day and night. But in this case had Tate simply hit him less viciously with the same technique there is almost surely no fine. That's kinda weird to think about.

Can you even imagine? Let alone Jimmy Clausen! Holy ten-win season. :(

cant really say what they would have done, the system they were groomed in was fired. since they were nfl caliber players, it made no sense to come back for their senior year in a new system and watch their numbers skew. Clausen just came off a year when he had 28-4 TD:INT ratio...it was the right call for both of them.
