Because its ND or its happened way too much over the last 2 years?

I think we need perspective.

A couple kids got in trouble for drinking at ND in the past little while.

Who the hell cares? Are you worried that other programs aren't going to like Notre Dame anymore?

News Flash: They've always hated us. Who gives a rip?

Drinking and making mistakes is part of 1) the college experience, and 2) life. I have a lot of very successful friends and all of them have a screw-up or stupid story. If this is the worst thing he ever does, pretty tame.

Next topic.

I'm not worried about anything. I was asking why the story was front page, because its ND related or because its ND related as a result of several other high profile errors in judgement?

Daniels Update
Notre Dame WR Daniels' case continued to August - chicagotribune.com

The legal ramifications of an underage drinking citation may linger into football season for DaVaris Daniels.

The Notre Dame receiver earlier today had his case continued until Aug. 9, which is five days after the Vernon Hills native and the rest of his Irish teammates take the field for the first official practice of the 2012 season.

A plea deal or dropped charges, of course, could clear Daniels' slate well before then. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly issued a statement after the May 13 incident that said any team discipline would be handled internally.

Daniels, a sophomore-to-be receiver, was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor on May 13, according to police records in his hometown of Vernon Hills.

Daniels was one of 29 individuals cited at an address that matches his own. Police said they were responding to a call for an ambulance when "all subjects were found to be participating in an underage party and had consumed alcohol while under the age of 21."

from that article
He struggled to grasp the routes in Kelly’s spread offense, which are more “concepts” rather than rigid routes

Something we all need to keep in mind regardless who the QB is.

"Concepts" rather than rigid routes" means the QB AND receiver have to "see" the same concept or the ball becomes an incompletion or worse, the "why the hell did he throw it THERE!" INT. INTs aren't always the QBs fault. Cut Golson and Hendrix some slack.

Davaris is handing the WR job to Chris Brown in my opinion. [and, amazingly, John Goodman]. He better watch it or he's going to be a somewhat better Deion Walker. THAT would be a huge waste.

Walker came to mind when I was reading that article. What could have been.

Completely agree. Daniel Smith I know has had some health issues, but it seems these two have so much talent but no FIRE in their belly.

For a kid who didn't play much, if any, wr in high school, to learning a difficult concept route based offense I think as a Soph being in the two deep isn't really all that bad. Coach even said he is starting to understand. Hopefully by end of the year it is clicking and we have added another threat on the outside.

I think he is going to be a work in progress, but once he catches a few balls he is going to gain conifdence and he will improve rapidly.

What's the problem? The article quotes Kelly recently saying Davaris has "answered the bell." Also says he played no WR in high school (I didn't realize that). Pretty big learning curve for him and seems to have his head on straight. We will have a rotation of receivers and DD looks to figure in where he is strongest.

Expecting him to be an every down #1 WR on the roster was and is pretty much fantasy land. I predict 20 catches for 350 yards. Not bad for a first year contributer although I suspect many here would call that hugely disappointing.

Interesting to me is DD giving reps to Chris Brown. Methinks he'll have us saying Yeah more than three X this year.

Not sure why BK said that about DaVairs in high school. He definitely played WR.

He did some but he was more a QB/RB. His coach used him all over the field. From a 2010 article posted in this thread:

DaVaris has excelled this season as a quarterback, wide receiver, running back, defensive back and kick returner for the 7-1 Cougars.

DaVaris' numbers this season have put him in the running for ESPNChicago.com's High School Football Player of the Year award. He has completed 7-of-17 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown, caught 11 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns, rushed for 363 yards and six touchdowns, returned two punts for touchdowns, intercepted three passes and scored two defensive touchdowns.
As a multifacted player he didn't get the time to develop skills full time position players do through repetition. He achieved in HS on raw talent. You can do that in HS but it's tougher in Div 1 where all the players can play and are big and quick.

This is from his ND Media Guide Bio note the passing and rushing stats throughout his HS career:

accounted for 19 total TDs during senior season in 2010: 10 rushing TDs, five receiving TDs, two punt returns, one interception return and one blocked field goal return ... posted 23 catches for 513 yards (22.3 yards per reception) in 2010 ... accounted for 888 all-purpose yards (221 receiving, 344 rushing, 323 passing) as junior in 2009

He had 23 catches, 513 yds, 5 TD as a Senior. Note the 10 TD rushing but only 5 receiving.

221 yds receiving as a Jr. but note he had more yds rushing AND passing than he did receiving.

He is a red shirt freshman. He has four years of eligibility left. Why are we freaking out and writing him off as the next Deon Walker?

He started off there, then the VH coach soon realized they didnt have a QB capable of getting the ball out to the WRs. Daniels then was converted to QB almost exclusively i believe in game 3 of his Sr year.

His HS teammate Evan Spencer plays for Ohio State and stayed at WR while DD went to QB.

Thank you. People read way too much into things. He hasn't even seen the field yet. You can't fault a kid for working hard to improve. As for praising his teammates, props to him. He is aware that the talent doesn't end with him, and realizes that number one spot requires his best. As I believe we are all looking forward to watching him reach his potential, let's hold off on the doubt until he's had his chance to prove himself.

I don't think anyone has written him off, on the contrary we're rooting for him.

OMM and I were both referring to the high expectations that came with Walker's recruitment similar to Daniels. Dieon had size, (6-4 186), speed, (4.43), experience, (caught more balls as a HS Jr than DaVaris probably caught in his HS career), and academics (3.4 vs DaVaris 2.4). But the expectations and HS experience didn't turn into PT.

DaVaris's HS Scout Profile noted some things he needed to work on which also sound familiar.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Speed
Toughness

Covers a lot of ground quickly off the line of scrimmage if he's not being pressed in coverage. Strong enough to get a good push on a receiver trying to press him. Runs good routes and presents a big target in space. Has good size and a surprising change of direction with a jab step move that sells a head and shoulder fake to get tacklers off balance. Has good size to block, but doesn't show a propensity for it - Scott Kennedy, Scout.com.

Then there's the competition from behind, the underclassmen such as Brown. Remember the guy that set ND pass catching records as a freshman? Duval something or other. What happened to him in the succeeding years when Michael Floyd arrived and broke his record?

DaVaris's time is NOW. Dieon didn't make it happen. DaVaris still can.

I know Kamara's last name and that he caught 32 passes as a freshman then 20 as a soph, 23 as a jr, and 11 as a sr. And that he scored more TDs as a freshman than he did in the rest of his career. The point is Kamara and Floyd should be remembered at the greatest pair of WRs in ND history. The Dynamic Duo that defenders couldn't double team. One of them for whatever reason, didn't grow after his freshman year.

Carpe diem. Before somebody else does.
