Says it is all from the endowment so they are all donated funds. Still though, I bet the alums that donated would like to see their money go to better use.

Gordon Gee is actually a pretty amazing university President here. Everyone loves him, in part because he actually walks around off campus neighborhoods and is known to go right into booze-fests and take pictures with all of the inebriated students. He's a complete 180 from Lloyd Jacobs (President at UT) whom the students regard as cold, distant, and a bafoon.
Gee realizes that you need to run Ohio State like a corporation. Under his tenure, the university has raised billions and has spent the money on completely rebuilding the campus.
Ohio State now has a brand new Union...
...the best rec center in the country...
...is building a revolutionary new cancer hospital...
...a brand new library expansion...
to go along with a complete new Business campus...
...and new Architecture building, new Chemical Engineering building, new Physics research building, completely redoing every dorm on campus, new thermal energy plants, etc etc etc.
They even built a new Campus gateway recently...
...and are completely rebuilding North Campus...
There's a reason Ohio State's median ACT score was a 28. They are raising money from the massive alumni base, and using it to build awesome improvements under the notion that "if you build it, they will come." The school is booming. Gee runs the show, he will make bank.

spin it however you want Bluth...that 64K spent on bow ties (are You F-ing kidding me?) could have been spent on tuition for some needy kids out your way. this type of stuff is what is killing this country: a 15M pay pkg being justified b/c the guy put up some buildings.

It isn't $64,000 for bow ties. It's $64,000 on that, and giveaways for him to give to people. It's smoozing money.
This isn't at all the stuff that is killing this country. The envy might be, however. "Put up some buildings" is so laughable. The guy is a professional fundraiser--that's a huge part of a President's job--and has hit the ball out of the park since he's been back.

It's easy to be shocked at the numbers thrown around. However, you have to look at the results. The article says he's helped raise 1.6 billion. He also oversees an operation that is similar, numbers-wise, to a city, over 100 thousand people including students. That's a lot of bananas and a lot of people.
You also have to look at the big picture in terms of putting up buildings etc. All of that contributes to the community through employment, education, graduates leaving and contributing on their own etc. That does a lot more, in my opinion, than giving away 6 scholarships instead of spending money on bow ties.

That will have nothing to do with this, and Ohio State and CIC schools will more than likely be spared from that bubble.
You could criticize Ohio State's policy to make sophomores live in dorms starting in the near future and say that is adding unnecessary costs to students (with the hope of improving the rental market due to a ~30% drop in demand), but not this.
Even if Gee used $10,000,000 annually in costs and compensation, if he turned around and give it all back to the students it would be $100 per student per semester (assuming 50,000 students, it's even more). The overwhelming majority of students here would pay Gee $100 to do his job of raising capital for the university's emergence into the upper echelon of universities. It's making everyone's degree worth more and thus ultimately making you more money.
It's as simple as spending more to make money. Only OSU is spending a lot of money to raise a lot of money. Get over it.

I can't speak for other universities, but generally its cuts in state funding, and a host of truly legitimate waste (i.e. overpaid Humanities professors).
Not all universities have "so much money," Ohio State does because it is harnessing the power of his massive alumni and fan base. That's why Gee plays up the football so much. Football raises a tonnnn of money indirectly too. Its endowment is $2.1Bil, up from $1.7Bil in 2005 (down from $2.3Bil in 2007...premarket crash). That's pretty impressive considering that they spend all of their generated money on new projects.
The new hospital alone will be $1.1Bil. That thing will truly put Ohio State "on the map."

Gee is Ohio State's psuedo-playboy celeb who goes around making alumni smile and throw cash at him for him to build buildings with.
We're bitching about $7.7m over five years, when the universities budget is $4.95B this year alone?
Literally were complaining about him spending $7.7M over the time that the university spent a budget (assuming years remained the same) of $24.75 BILLION?
$7,700,000/$24,750,000 = .00031% of the budget on Gee's fundraising lifestyle. OMGZZZ

One thing we can all hopefully agree on is that being President of a university sounds like a terrific job.
ok so figure 20K for in state and 36k for out of state this year. (all in: tuition room and board)
any idea what it was 10 yrs ago? 15 yrs ago?

It would be so awesome. One ofthe best jobs ever.
Wake up at 7am, go to your office and hear reports, then have a lunch meeting with a donor, then attend an event and talk, then go home and have dinner with rich donors. Then repeat Monday-Friday. Throw in some tours of Ohio, national meetings, etc etc. It's the life.

I have no idea. What I do know is that Gee is heading the Governor's council to streamline public education in Ohio to lower costs.
Seen here next to Kasich in meeting with all of the Ohio public Presidents.
This has included teaming up with Columbus State CC to share space and streamline enrollment/transfer credits. Gee made Ohio State switch from quarters to semester (a huge deal) to get on board with a State-wide shift to streamline public school credits in an attempt to lower costs via greater efficiency.

but i wonder, does the comparison the article pointed out of other universities presidents that are similar in size to pOSU (they used Texas and Michigan as examples) demostrate to you that pOSU is overpaying for him for what he brings in?
