imo we can't afford to take less than 2 corners this cycle. after that i say you take a pass rusher (muhammad) and the first come first served b/t an elite wr, DB, DL. take that for what it's worth, but i think we definitely need atleast 2 more corners this cycle

well good thing we already have 2 corners this cycle.

We have to have a flex 5th year player or two that Kelly is willing to let go in order to make room for a late 5* type commitment. I would really hate to see us turn away an elite talent to to make room for a punter. I know ST is important but having it come down to that is pretty frustrating.

Where does Prestwood stand? Is he possibly coming back or gone for good? Jamoris does not look likely for a sixth year but that is not for sure. How many fifth years are factored in an estimate of 24 for this cycle?

I don't see how the staff can turn down a late commitment from an elite player in order to offer a punter.

I thought we had more than 4 spots left? Is that number excluding any 5th year decisions?

I must say, this is a great position to be in for ND. I haven't followed recruiting for every long, but you can almost sense a shift in power this year. This class is special.

FWIW, Sapp and Wiltfong don't think we'd accept Khalfani's commitment until we know what's up with Folston. They said the only commitments we'd accept among the 2013 visitors this weekend are L.J. Moore, Cole Luke and Torii Hunter. They don't predict that any of those three will pop, as they have other visits to take, but I guess you never know. Moore and Hunter seem to have the interest level

If we win, I predict Moore and probably Hunter pop soon thereafter.

ND does not lose too many kids with genuine interest who visit during a winning streak.

If we lose, who knows?

No team can be in the elite class in college football if they have a mediocre and erratic punter. That will cost you games. If the staff has decided to roll the dice and take no punter this cycle, it is only because they see Brindza making serious strides towards consistency in practice. Or they have a solid idea about some mysterious walk-on possibility. Virginia Tech got such a guy the other year; his dedication became suspect and it hasn't worked out [as of last season anyway --- I'm not following this year]. You don't want to gamble with this --- there is almost never a "flexible next man in" adjustment which is safe here.

I hope we get Moore, Hunter, punter, and Muhammad.

The thing about fifth years, we are going to need leadership next year losing Manti and Eifert. Those two guys keep the team steady. Having starters come back for another year is a great idea to fill that void.

24 frosh assumes 4 5th years. I think 3 5th years is pretty much bare minimum. I mean, I think we want Martin, Watt and one of the ILBs. We don't want to break in more than two new starters on the OL (Golic and Cave are gone after this year), and I think we want at least one experienced ILB to play alongside Grace (preferably Fox and Calabrese would both return, so there would be one experienced guy on the field and one on the sideline to help coach up the young guys, but there's a numbers crunch). Obviously we want Wood as well, but I'm considering him gone. He looked electric against MSU and I expect him to have a good season and go pro.

You need a punter... Ben Turk's performance controlled the field position battle against MSU. Without that, who know how the game would have ended. If the coaching staff believes we need one, there will be one on signing day.

Is this week's Q&A Eric Hansen mentioned the nimber or 5th years and noted he expected ND to take a class of 25 with no explanation of the number.

Keep in mind NSD is 4.5 months away. There's 9 college games left, x-rays, surgeries and rehabs, ND academics and Res Life, family situations, the NFL Draft declaration, as well as similar events at the high school level still to unfold.

I agree w/ the MSU point. And yes, I know we need a punter. Brindza will have two years after this year, so I can see why the staff will go for a punter. I just like the idea of a preferred walk-on earning a scholly over giving one to an incoming freshman over an elite player, I guess.

ya, with the way Kyle Brinza has been playing, I would like to see if he could punt, Brindza could be a one man do it all type of guy. The staff said he could do both very well.

I expect 1 transfer (I dont know who) but it is almost expected these days. I would still like to take 5 more recruits:
- 2 DBs (Moore, Luke, Alexander) - the problem is that Luke is a Texas lean and Alexander seems to want to stay in the South, so 2 more DBs may not be possible.
- 1 DL/CAT (Muhammad)
- 1 WR (Hunter Jr.)
- 1 RB/slot (Folston)

But the information about elite prospects starting to call the staff interests me greatly. The problem I see arising is that our class fills up too soon and ND has to turn away top talent who got interested too late.

We win tomorrow and this will be the case.

Well that's what happens when you win football games. Kids want to be on a winning football team. When is the last time we had to turn top football talent down? And don't say Tommy Schutt..

Kelly originally signed Kyle BECAUSE he had potential to do both kicking chores, and Kyle began seriously practicing punting. That doesn't say that he's good enough at it, especially in games... he has afterall only now begun to look like he has the college field kicking phenomenon figured out [fingers crossed that he stays consistent on that and settles his nerves down so as to not overstrike the ball or slightly over-run his marks].

Brindza has the leg to do both. The KO and FG tasks are mainly a matter of his head. The punting thing may or may not be technique based --- I heard somewhere once, that he takes a bit too long on the walk-up and delivery. Kelly et al are watching in practice you can bet --- he IS our back-up to Ben THIS year.

Mike kind of hinted that some commitments might not be accepted...

Sapp didn't say we wouldn't take a punter. Just that we wouldn't use a scholly. Likely try and get one to walk on.

I agree punter is a big deal. It just seems to me as many good ones walk on and earn a schollie as we have recruited and busted. Kevin "Thunderfoot" Kopka has probably jaded my perspective for life. The story of him riding into practice injured with two double quarter pounders from Micky Ds to help accellerate the healing process was a good indicator of things to come. Thunder thighs may have been more appropriate than thunder foot when all was said and done.

So for the "elite" guys that are calling ND now that weren't on the radar before. What do you guys think is meant by elite here. top 250 player, top 100 players top 50... five star guys, top 10 at their position?
